Animal Wedding Cake Toppers
Some people find the traditional human cake toppers to be creepy, boring, or impersonal. For those out there who seek an unconventional alternative, animal cake toppers are the way to go. These toppers can represent many different things when it comes to couples about to tie the knot: their love for animals, their favorite animals, animals that match their personalities, or even their pets. Animal cake toppers spark conversation and intrigue during the reception by adding just an extra touch of the newlyweds' personal expression. Plus, they're super cute!
Wedding toppers are meaningful, and they are one of the only wedding decorations that remain in the home long after the event is over. Shouldn't your topper, therefore, be something unique to you and your partner? There are many artists out there who design custom animal cake toppers who will gladly work on commission, but, if you have a crafty side, you can also make your own.
Dog Cake Toppers
Who doesn't love dogs? Some people love dogs so much, they put sculptures of them on top of their wedding cakes! Dogs on top of a wedding cake can symbolize your passion for canine kind if you are dedicated to working with them at animal shelters or veterinary clinics, or it can symbolize the dedication that you and your fiances has for your four-legged children.
The talented artist Rachel Young made a pit bull cake topper for a commissioner who wanted a sculpture of her two dogs, Sandy and Sheeba, to sit atop her wedding cake.
Similarly, the sculptor named MadamePomm uses her talents to make numerous dressed up dog couples that pose on top of wedding cakes for anyone who is interested. The breeds she offers to make vary from Beagles, Bull terriers, Great Danes, Bernese mountain dogs, and even French bulldogs! All the dog couples are dressed up in suits, ties, and adorable white gowns and veils. It's pretty darn adorable actually.
Bird Cake Toppers
Birds are one of the most traditional animals used as wedding cake toppers. The turtle doves, or simply white doves, became symbols of undying love due to the dove's tendency to form a strong, lifelong pair bond with one mate. But birds of many shapes and sizes, not just doves, are renowned for being pair bonders, and the term "mated for life" is often used to describe the relationships of eagles, swans, condors, macaws, and puffins.
It is no wonder then that birds are so popular as wedding cake toppers. These twitterpated tweeters are the perfect symbol for your new union, whether they take on the form of vintage George Good owls from 1975, or TeaOlive's gorgeous, custom sculptures.
Dinosaur Cake Toppers
With Jurassic World just around the corner, some couples are looking for more dinosaurs in their lives. And with good reason! Dinosaurs are like dragons that actually existed. What is cooler than that? And what better way to pay homage to the nostalgia of pretending to be a raptor when you were a kid, or to relive your childhood dream of being a paleontologist, than by putting a couple of dinos on top of that cake?
Dino cake toppers can be cool and realistic, or they can be simplified and cute. Whichever option you choose, they are sure to get a lot of attention.
This tutorial will show you how you can make your own dinosaur couple out of some old dino toys, while Skunkboycreations can be held responsible for the adorable felt stegasaurus and "long neck" couple shown at right.
My Little Pony Cake Toppers
There are some real diehard My Little Pony fans out there, so it would make sense that when two pony-lovers wed, they utilize their joined interest as an excuse to have a unique cake topper. As many My Little Pony fans are creative, some are perfectly able and willing to create their own cake toppers by sculpting them from scratch, or by customizing some already existing toys. Customized My Little Pony toys can be unbelievably cool, and you can start learning the basics of pony customization from this handy tutorial here.
If you would rather have someone else make the sculptures or customize a pre-existing toy for you, some worthwhile pony sculptors include the likes of Krowzivitch and emilySculpts, while an excellent custom artist might be Thatg33kgirl or Woosie.
Whichever route you choose, these cake toppers are cute and just a little bit nerdy. Perfect for the geek in all of us!
Original Character Cake Toppers
Some of the more creative of you out there may develop what are called Original Characters - or OCs. These are characters from stories, comics, or illustrations that you have developed, and they can be a lot of fun to design. They can be humans, aliens, animals, or anything! If these characters have particular meaning to you and your fiancé, why not turn them into cake toppers for the rest of your wedding guests to enjoy as well?
OC designs can get crazy, so it is difficult for some sculptors to give life to your fantasy if the idea is complex. The trick is locating an artist who is willing to tackle your character(s) and do your vision justice.
Wildspiritwolf is just such an artist. She has made many animal wedding cake toppers - some of which have very unusual designs. The characters she sculpts are OCs that commissioners have designed themselves, making each one a unique token of their union.
Wooden Cake Toppers
We've all seen the trendy DIY wooden cake toppers that people have been going nuts over lately, but why not take the wood part of that idea and transform it into something even a little more unique? Instead of a human bride and groom, why not a pair of turtles??
Wooden cake toppers are the perfect little something to place on top of an already cute, uncomplicated cake, giving your wedding a feeling of simplicity. They are playful, unimposing, charming, and genuine - qualities that many newlyweds these days would be proud to be represented by.
Bunnywithatoolbelt is a master of wooden cake topper design, but just one of many that exist on Etsy and elsewhere. She has truly captured the subtle appeal that draws people to these types of figures. With numerous species to choose from, whether you're looking for chickens, alligators, Daschunds, or sheep, this experienced carver has you covered! She even takes custom orders, if an animal pair you want is not listed on her online store front.
If you're planning a rustic wedding, these cake toppers are a spot-on choice.
Ceramic Cake Toppers
Ceramic cake toppers are traditional, and as such they hold true to the ideals of the traditional wedding. The white of the figurines symbolizes purity, and the nature of the clay's creation as it braves the fires of the kiln cause it to come out more beautiful than before. It goes through Hell and back with solid fortitude. What better medium to use as a representation of you and your partner's eternal union?
Artists such as Melabowed create animal themed wedding toppers by taking traditional human toppers and lobbing off either one or both of the pair's heads. She then replaces the decapitated heads with the heads of choice animals. And voila! Unusual cake toppers that appeal to the traditionalist and the unconventional!
If you would like to learn how to make ceramic figurines yourself, be prepared to practice. A lot! Here is a basic tutorial on how to get started. Alternatively, you can visit any "paint your own pottery" studio to find a pair of matching animal figures that you can either paint or fire as-is.
These colorless toppers may not be very wacky or super fancy to some viewers, but they are beautiful in their modesty. Some of the plainest objects can be the most inspiring.
Felted Cake Toppers
Soft and squishy.
Fuzzy and wuzzy.
What more is there to say? These are simply adorable! While the traditional idea of cake toppers are hardened figures made out of clay, glass, or wood, these little felted buddies will bring an extra slice of cuddly sweetness to any wedding reception. If you are planning a rustic wedding, a couple of felted figures would make an excellent cake topper choice, as felt and knitting reminds people of old fashioned pleasures.
There are many styles of felted creations available from many different artists around the world, but whomever you may choose, you are certain to not be disappointed!
Felting Dreams, FeltVille, and Felttess are just a few of the many talented felters out there who create the most stinkingly cute squishables for newlyweds. Foxes, deers, dogs, skunks, owls, and giraffes, there is simply no end to the animals you can have felted. Unfortunately, the artist known as Deargirlface is no longer taking commissions for her delightful deer creations due to some hardships going on in her life, but there are still a lot of others to choose from!
But you don't have to rely on someone else to bring your idea to life. If you would like to try your hand at felting some little critters instead of commissioning an artist, give this Youtube video below a quick peak:
Figurine Cake Toppers
Figurine cake toppers are super easy to make yourself. All you have to do is locate two Schleich (or comparable) brand animal figurines, and then add a tiny veil and garter to the female figure, and a tiny top hat and bow to the male figure!
If you have two male figures, or two female figures, top hats and veils and garters and whatever can be mixed and matched. You can actually put anything on the figurines that you want, or nothing at all. You can even repaint them so that they are both gold, silver, or whichever shade you want to match your wedding's theme colors.
The good thing about figurines is that they're easy to find, being sold at most toy stores or grocery stores, they're pretty cheap, and you can find nearly any animal that you want since many figurine companies work hard to manufacture a huge list of anatomically correct species. Adding the bits of flair here and there to figurines only requires a little bit of time and some glue. You can find all the items you need in a single toy or craft store.
Here is a tutorial on how to make a cute, painted pair of animal cake toppers. Quick and painless! If you simply do not have time to buy a couple of figurines and paint them yourself, there are many options for pre-painted figurines for purchase online. Deer seem popular, but any animal is an option.
Coldblooded Cake Toppers
From snails, to pet lizards, to dragons, to beetles, cold blooded critters can capture our imagination, or make us go "awww" at the sight of them. Sometimes even both at the same time! There are so many options to choose from when it comes to toppers, but as an ectotherm enthusiasts, the author of this Hub definitely appreciates it when couples choose some cold blooded cuties as the focus of their cakes.
If you are a herpetologist or you and your beau have a few pet reptiles, consider commissioning Holly Edwards from My Custom Cake Topper to make a pair of snakes or bearded dragons for you. And speaking of dragons, she makes Night Furies too! Oh, and snails, and beetles, and frogs, and spiders, and pretty much any other creepy crawly you can think of. She makes other animals too, and cars, trees... Anything you want, really!
If you're looking for the creator of the beautiful white dragon cake topper to the right, look no further than TheButterEnd, and check out a video of its amazing creation below! Wowy zowy, now that's a dragon!
These are the author's personal favorites when it comes to wedding toppers. Something about the slopey, snake- or ferret-like bodies of all these figures appeals to the ophidiophiliac in all of us (okay, not all of us, but they're still neat regardless).
Bonjour Poupette has a knack for creating beautifully stylized sculptures while maintaining the form of the different species used, and has arranged some of the widest selection of unusual animals ever seen when it comes to cake toppers. From honey badgers, lemurs, aye-ayes, kitsunes, meerkats, beavers, foxes, bears, raccoons, and deer, you'll be delighted to see your favorite animals listed on their website. Do you want an unusual animal that most other artists are uncomfortable with making? Then Bonjour Poupette is the place you need to go!
Taxidermy Cake Toppers
Look out, things are getting a little weird around here! Some people like to think outside the box. And then some people like to think WAY outside the box. So far out of the box that you can't even see the box anymore!
The idea of placing taxidermied animals onto real desserts may make a lot of viewers squeamish, but there is no denying that taxidermy as a medium for cake toppers is extremely unique. Whether that's a good or bad thing is up to you... The animals typically used as cake toppers are mice, rats, or other small mammals. Properly taxidermied animals are cleaned and treated so that there is no chance of disease spread or degradation of the figures.
"Weird taxidermy" is the unusual placement of deceased animals in ways that are entirely unnatural to the real animals they were derived from. Weird taxidermy can be used in hybridizations, artwork, or, naturally, as wedding décor. Some "weird taxidermists" include NimbleMatters and PreciousCreature, who will both gladly create a cake topper of your peculiar dreams.
Furry Cake Toppers
Yeah, furries are pretty weird, but who are any of us to stand in the way of weird love? If two wacky people somehow find each other in this crazy, messed up world of ours, then good for them!
Being that furry characters are animal/human hybrids, they are included on this list. Furries are known for being creative types; artists, writers, readers, and musicians. Fantasy plays a large part in their interests and lifestyles, so it is no wonder that their marriages include some sort of fantastical wedding cake toppers. Most furry cake toppers are intricate and complicated. Not only are the outfits of the bride and groom to be taken into account, but the actual fur pattern, colors, and unique attributes (such as wings, fangs, tails, etc) need to be included too! Because of this reason, furry cake toppers can be very expensive.
WickedSairah is an artist/sculptor that will sometimes take commissions for furry-inspired wedding cake toppers. She also sometimes makes The Lion King, Gargoyles, and Dr. Seuss themed cake toppers should furries not be up your alley.
Stacked Animal Cake Toppers
So, say you like animals, but two animals just is not enough animals! Not to worry, the Internet has you covered again. If you're looking for something that you've never seen before on a wedding cake, why not give these stacked animal pillars a chance?
Looking like something out of the German fairytale Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten, these stacked animal wedding toppers are definitely not something you see every day. But if you are a lover of all animals, and you simply can't choose between one or two species, then this may be the best idea for you and your new partner. Or maybe you two are farmers, or veterinarians, or you met at school over your shared interest in George Orwell's Animal Farm, I don't know!
Stacked animals resonate in us as being both symbolic and artistic, as each animal symbolizes something in traditional and modern folklore. Dogs, for instance, symbolize loyalty and love, while oxen may stand for strength and resolute.

Let's face it, some animals are better left outside of the home and should really not be sold in pet stores, much less anywhere where someone might find them. Some animals just make the worst pets.
I'm sure you know who you want to invite to your wedding. But what about who you don't want to invite? Here is a great Hub on how to avoid a hellish invitation list full of useless characters.
