Ellen DeGeneres Interviews Chaz Bono

The Ellen DeGeneres Episode on Transgender Discrimination

I found myself captivated by the touching interview Ellen DeGeneres had with Chaz Bono on her daytime talk show. If you haven't heard, Chaz was one of the celebrities chosen to be on 'Dancing With the Stars' this season. I learned after watching the show that some viewers are upset with a transgender male being one of the contestants and want him kicked off.

One of the reasons I like Ellen and her show is because she's an intelligent, funny and genuine person. She doesn't pretend to be something she's not which probably motivated her to come out as a lesbian many years ago. She knew her decision to "come out" was not going to be good for ratings on her, then, t.v. sitcom, nor would it win her any popularity contests. It took great courage for her to admit she was gay in a society that seems uncomfortable with anything that isn't understood by the majority.

Definition of Transgender

Defintion of transgender, according to dictionary.com:

Transgender is a less clinical term, referring more to gender identity and gender expression than to sexual orientation or physical sex characteristics. It is also a more general and inclusive term: a transgender person may be gay, transsexual or transvestite.

Interview with Chaz Bono

Ellen's interview with Chaz Bono was very touching and educational. She asked him if he knew that being picked as a competitor in "Dancing With the Stars" would cause such uproar and controversy. Chaz said he knew there would be those out there that would have some reservations about it but didn't expect all the backlash it created. Ellen did a great job using her comic genius and compassionate heart to bring out how ridiculous it is, to think that Chaz being on a dance show, would be dangerous and bad for our children. He also didn't anticipate viewers wanting to get him kicked off the dance competition.

If you havn't been brought up to speed, Chaz, who use to be known as Chastity, struggled for years with his sexuality. He shared that he never felt or identified himself as a woman. As the years passed, it became more painful to endure. He underwent gender reassignment surgery last year to become a man. Just like Ellen, it took great courage for Chaz to come out as the transgender person he is. Having a famous mother like Cher, had to make it doubly difficult to come to terms with his identity crisis.

At one point in the interview, Chaz received a surprise call from a viewer. It turned out to be his mother, Cher. She didn't hesitate to speak out against the haters that have tried to boycott her son from the show. In pure Cher form, she said, "If you've got that excess time and that amount of hostility, I'm not sure I can say anything to you that would make you change your feelings. I don't know that I would have the magic words to soothe you, comfort you, into not being terrified of my child being on "Dancing With the Stars." Bravo Cher!

Another poignant moment of the interview was when Ellen talked about the problem of "bullying" in school. She said that as adults and role models, how do we expect our kids to quit bullying when we're doing it ourselves. "Shame on us," Ellen said, "Shame on us."

Transgender Role Model

Do you have a problem with Chaz being on 'Dancing with Stars' because he is Transgender

  • Yes-it sets a bad example
  • No-we are all equal and what does Chaz being transgender have to do with him being on a dance show

Kind compassionate hub about Chaz Bono. It will be interesting to see how he does on Dancing With the Stars as it's possible that once the show begins more supporters may call in even though there may still be many who vote against him simply because of his gender change.

Chaz is able to become who he is now because he has an awesome mum who is very supportive and always there for him. Can't wait to watch Dancing with the Stars.

Minnetonka, it is this type of intolerance that drives me crazy when it comes to those Christians that take judgmental stands. My Bible states for a person NOT to get tattooed, I have a shirt of tattoos, marks that permanently show I have sinned. I see no difference in any one sin vs another. Who are we to judge? It would literally take 100s of thousands of dollars to remove my sins from view. It only takes Faith and the asking for forgiveness, any sin I might consider of another I have learned to shut my mouth as it is loose tongues that will harm us the most. I had no idea about this save that Ellen is what she is, and her sins if she has committed any are between her and our creator. The one who gave free will to one and all.

An interestingly well written hub, voted up,

Blessings,

Dusty

As transgendered woman (male to female) I do have some understanding of what Chaz has gone through. Just the coming out process is enough to scare most people off. If you are transgendered at any of the levels of the experience you will be missunderstood. There is no age limit on bullies and no religious restrictions

Happyboomernurse-Your right, once the show gets going, maybe some of those fears will dissipate. I just think people get worked up about things they don't understand.

You are so right Ladyrain. Cher loves her child and is there for him. I am glad Chaz can now be happy and feel like he's in the right body now :-)

Dusty-I feel just as you do. Who are we to Judge? We are all sinners for differen't reasons. Intolerance is why our world is so screwed up and people can't get along. Love is all we need to make things better. Let's see the good in each other instead of focusing on things we don't understand :-)

Janyne-God bless for coming by and sharing your personal experience. I can't imagine how hard it would be to not only feel you were born in the wrong body but then, when having the courage to do something about it, dealing with bullies. God loves us and wants us all to be happy, at least that's the God I believe in :-)I am so happy for you and for Chaz. Should be a great season of Dancing with the Stars.

Hi nightbear. Yes, I was really impressed by Ellen and the compassion she showed for what Chaz is going through. Her words of "shame on us, Shame on us," really hit the point home of how ridiculous all the backlash is. Should be an interesting season with all the differen't celebs on it.

Good hub, Minnetonka! I can't believe this is even an issue. In today's world, you wouldn't expect this kind of backlash. They still have the Kardashians on tv, don't they? I find them totally offensive, but nobody would complain if they were on the show. It's sad that Chaz has had to endure this. I have always loved Ellen, she is so real and funny!

Catgypsy-That is so funny that you brought up the Kardashian's. Ellen actually brought that very issue up that day. We can be ok with watching these Kardashian's drunk and stumbling all over and swearing, etc... but Chaz is the one to be scared of? I hope that my hub and Ellen's show, make people really think about their intolerance.

I love Ellen too. She is such a great role-model for the GLBT. She was really worked up about it and understandably so. I'm sure it brought up some memories of what she went through when she came out. I know she went through hell back then. Thanks for stopping Pink :-)

Thank you for the review of this interview - I had not seen it. Transgenderism/transsexuality is something that society has only recently been comfortable talking about. I'm glad there is someone who, by virtue of his mother's fame, and his relative wealth, in a better position to talk openly about his experience; he'll be speaking for hundreds of thousands (millions?) who silently suffer the ignorance and hatred of people who can't or don't want to understand. Bravo to Chaz Bono, and bravo to you, Minnetonka Twin, for writing this Hub!

I love Ellen. She is a kind, compassionate person with a big heart. Her interview with Chaz was touching. How small these people are to be hostile towards someone who has spent most of their life trying to be what they are not. How wonderful that he was able to resolve his issues and bring peace to his life.

That is a very striking statement that Cher made. I bet it made a few people think.

I did not know that (Chastity) Chaz had made the change. I don't watch much TV. I think Ellen's coming out did hurt her at first but then it seems to have been a wise choice. I know many people who look up to her for it.

Interesting hub!

Hi Minnetonka Twin, thanks for sharing the Ellen Show and Interview with Chaz...I wish I had been able to see it. I did however catch Chaz on Dancing with the Stars, and though he looked Happy and at Peace with himself...Of course I'd like (from a Health point of view to see him loose some weight) which I'm sure he will if he keeps on Dancing, and is not voted off...And Good for Mother Bear Cher, to speak up!

Minnetonka Twin profile image

Thanks for stopping b.Malin, I appreciate it. Yes, I 'm sure Chaz will lose some weight doing all this dancing if he last a while anyway. Cher is the bomb isn't she? She and her son are strong people :-)

Thank you for writing such a wonderful hub. You are absolutely right when you say "how do we expect our kids to quit bullying when we're doing it ourselves"

I myself have been on a path for some time now and have been writing about it too. The path I endeavour to remain on is the one of non-judgement. By judging another we create conflict within and without and until we learn to stop judging the ego continues to enslave us.

Here is my gift to you today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpVUih5nY9g

Very good hub Minn. I thought he has did very well so far, actually a surprising job he has done. I tell you, Ellen is a wonderful person. She has a huge heart and it is a pleasure to watch her. I believe she will be compared to the greats once she is done. Your life is your life. If he wants to live that way and it makes him happy, I say do it. We only get one life to make it right. Live happy and never give anything second thought. Take care friend and great hub!

his mom is very famous, and he's not one of the first people to get a sex change. he has no special talents.

Dear Spirit Whisperer-Thank you so much for the beautiful video and your wisdom-filled comments. We hurt ourselves and others when we judge someone. We are all different in certain ways and who is to say one is better than another. I love my life because I CHOOSE to see the beauty in everyone and everything. Have a great day and so nice to see you here :-)

Minnetonka Twin profile image

Lyric Writer-Isn't Ellen an amazing person though? I am very happy for Chaz and I think it's fear that makes one judge another. Your right, life is short and we need to be who we truly are.

Minnetonka Twin profile image

Minnetonka Twin 5 years ago from Minnesota Author

I agree that Chaz might not be known for any talents but the fact that his mom is famous will definitely help the GLBT community. He has courage for coming on a show like DWTS when he is being so judged. I say BRAVO to him! It can be a cruel world.

I remember Chaz being on dancing with the stars but was unaware of all of the ugly things that came about because of his presence. It's sad that some people feel the need to judge others without understanding. Maybe one day they will understand that we all live in glass houses and should not throw stones. Thanks for the info.

Minnetonka Twin profile image

I have always loved that glass house metaphor. It's so true. We are all made in God's image and no one is better than another. I just wish this world could just love each other instead of fearing differences.
