Looking for excuses for missing a party? Can't think of a reason to avoid attending a meeting? Want to skip a social event? Clueless on what you can say to not go out with friends, work colleagues or family? Here are some common and effective excuses that you can use to bail out on birthday parties, ceremonies, official meetings, weddings and other social events that you don't want to attend.

Pretending to fall sick is possibly one of the most commonly used excuse for not attending parties.

1) Sickness: You are sick and could make others sick too

One of the most commonly used excuses to avoid a party or a social event is sickness. From flu to headache to body ache to upset stomach, there are heaps of non life threatening infections and diseases that you could supposedly fall prey to.

Don't use the excuse of falling sick all the time else your lie will be caught one time or another. Be sure to stay at home during the period for which you have used the excuse.

2) Family drama: You are grounded or mum/dad said no

If you are still living with your parents you can easily miss any event by saying that you are grounded. Excuses such as your mom and dad not allowing you to go can also be handy.

Don't forget to give your parents a heads up just in case a friend calls home and finds out the truth from your parents.

3) Travelling: You are going to travel to another city

Avoid attending a party by using the excuse of travelling. Pretend that you are going to be away during the time when you have been invited for an event. Switch off your cell phone so you don't have to answer any calls.

If you live with your parents or a housemate, be sure to tell them about your plot so that they can tackle a situation if someone decides to rock up at your door.

4) Pet's sickness: You had to take your pet to the vet

Pets are a part of the family and they can be used as good excuses to avoid going to a party. Send a text or call the host last minute, informing that you will be unable to attend because your dog fell sick or your cat got hurt.

Make your excuse sound serious by saying that you need to take your pet to the vet urgently.

5) Forgetfulness: You forgot the date

An easy way to not attend an event, is to just not attend it and pretend as if you forgot all about it. This excuse can be used when you have been invited for a party or a function by someone who does not keep in touch with your regularly or a kind of person you stay away from.

Don't bother calling or texting and if you meet that person a few months down the line, you can just pretend to have forgotten the date. Say that you are sorry for your forgetfulness and make your apology sound genuine.

6) Priority for another event: You have another more important event to attend

Create the classic situation where you have to supposedly skip a friend's party, which you didn't want to go to in the first place, because you have to attend a cousin's wedding or your brother's birthday on the same night.

Bring up any other occasion which is regretfully more important than the one you don't want to attend. It could be a friend's wedding, someone's funeral or a family event.

Use the burden of studies to bail yourself out from going to a party you don't want to attend.

7) Exams and studies: You have to study overtime

Exams are a picture perfect excuse for missing a party. If you are studying for college or still in school, use exams as the perfect reason for not attending an event you have been invited to.

Create an exam if you don't have a real one lined up and be sure to say that your exams are on the very next day else your friends could make fun of you for being a bit too geeky. Project submission deadlines and too much homework can also be used as excuses for bunking out on a party.

8) Job: You are unable to take leave from work

A perennial excuse used by working professionals is the inability to take leave from work. Whether you want to skip going interstate for a wedding or simply not tag along with your friends on a weekend getaway, use work as an excuse.

Say that your boss is not letting you take leave or simply blame the hectic end-of-month schedule for being unable to leave the office.

9) Heartbreak: You just broke up and are not in the mood to go out

Relationship breakups are a difficult phase for everyone. If you have recently broken up with your girlfriend or boyfriend there is no need for you to even look for an excuse to bail yourself out from attending unwanted social events.

All you have to do is use your recent breakup as an excuse to feel glum and depressed all the time. Feel free to showcase your bad mood and ill temper as you speak to the host of the party you have been invited to.

Make your injury excuse more believable by using dressing to show your apparent injury.

10) Feigning injury: You broke a bone or injured yourself

Is a guy with a broken leg expected to turn up to a birthday party? Is a girl with a broken hand expected to turn up at a couple's night? The answer is most likely not. If the pressure of social anxiety is making you want to not go out with friends for a particular event at any cost, you could feign injury to skip it.

This excuse may work like a charm if you wrap your leg in bandages and dressing. It will paint the picture perfect setting for you to miss out on an outing that you don't want to go to.

11) Being lost: You couldn't find your way to the address

If you want to show that you at least tried to reach the event, say that you were lost and could not find directions to the address that was given to you. Don't turn on your cell phone and pretend that the battery was dead so you couldn't make a call either.

12) Money matters: You are broke

'I'm broke' is a top excuse as not many people will offer to pocket all your bills including your cab fare, food, bar tab and other expenses associated with even a small trip to the movies. You can use it to get away from an event because it is as simple as saying 'Look mate I can't come. I don't even have the money for bus fare. Maybe next time'

And if a kind friend offers to fund your outing use another rebuttal along the lines of 'I would never want to burden you in such a way. But I will hold you on your offer when I really need the money for something more important'

Say that you car broke down and you were left stranded. You leave little scope for any kind of rebuttals.

13) Car problems: Your car broke down

This excuse is easy to use and hard to put down. Say that your car broke down and you were left stranded until help arrived.

If you live far away, you can even say that you were home because the car didn't start at all. Add weight to your excuse by furiously claiming that the repairs set you back hundreds of dollars.

14) Missed public transport: You missed the last bus/train

Staying in suburbs that are serviced by public transport less frequently can have its advantages when it comes to finding excuses to miss a party. Say that you missed the last train out or that the last bus never showed up.

No one is likely to come pick you up if your suburb is really far from where the party is. 'Who will drop me back?' is a rebuttal you can use if someone adamantly offers to pick you up.

15) Caring for others: You had to take someone to the hospital

Just like you can feign being sick yourself, someone else you know can also supposedly fall sick. Bail yourself out from having to attend a meeting by saying that you had to drive a neighbor, friend, family member or a cousin to the hospital.

Make sure that this excuse is used as a one-off because people don't need to be rushed to the hospital often and you risk the chance of sounding fake if you overdo it.
