Fare Well

You stood your ground as I drove away

Your reflection confident, as if to say

"We'll meet again; perhaps today"

There's nothing I can do, nothing to say

You have no idea, no earthly clue

This is the last time that I'll see you

Innocent, bright eyes that shine,

Unafraid as they look into mine

Uncomplicated, secure, serene and kind

Another like you; I'll never find

You have no idea, no earthly clue

This is the last time that I'll see you

The thought of this tears at my soul

The reality of this was not my goal

Where we'll find ourselves, we'll never know

On separate paths, we continue to grow

You have no idea, no earthly clue

This is the last time that I'll see you

Fate has taken a twisted turn

Destiny my captain, I've come to learn

Directing each step, each deep concern

That sears my soul, my heart to burn

You have no idea, no earthly clue

This is the last time that I'll see you

.

I see your peace, your unwavering trust

I cannot hold your gaze, turn away I must

For the truth that awaits you...dust to dust

Will forever remain; is forever unjust

You have no idea, no earthly clue

This is the last time that I will see you.

Stolen from my hands, dealt without care

I must take my leave; I must leave you there

Awaiting the next time we meet; and I swear

I do not leave you without a care

I'm sorry.......

You have no idea, no earthly clue

That this is the last time that I will see you.

I must agree with A.A. Zavala. I think the words he chose are perfect; aching, painful, foreboding. Those feelings just ooze from your words. Really very well done! Voted up and awesome.

Dear Kathy, This is gut-wrenchingly beautiful, disturbing honesty. Beautifully written and applicable for all living, breathing entities. My human nature drives my curiosity, is it another human or a beloved pet or an unknown, lovable stray animal? It is sad reality that the more we allow ourselves to love, the more we feel loss. Simple, sad, poetic truth that shows your pure, beautiful soul. I'm sending love your way, beautiful friend.

Well chosen words, oozing the dreadful knowledge that destiny is our captain. There are some things in this life we cannot change, so many events that will inevitably happen in spite of who and what and where we are...

Heart-touching!

Dear Poetic Fool, Amy, cherylone, Martie and Colin; WOW! Thank you for such fantastic comments. Poetic Fool, that you share Augustine's words is such a compliment! Thank you

Dear Dear AMY! There you are! I was away for so long; months. And since my return; I hadn't seen you here though I visit so less often than before. I have to tell you...(and it's amazing that you could see the possibility)..this poem came to me last night in the am hours...the first stanza..and I saw the figure of a cat...the poem originally was for that image. As I wrote it today, it became this current form. So..you are on the mark! It could be either for any # of reasons. I am so impressed w/your intuition. So glad to see you here

Cherylone..I'm sad that it made you cry...and also 'honored' because these words touched you that much.

Martie...you are so spot on w/your interpretation of life's unfortunate journey (sometimes). Yes, some things are out of our hands. I guess I could say that this encapsulates experiences we have or may have lived through...it's not out of the question; that's for sure. thank you very much, my dear friend, for always being so astute.

Colin! I don't know if you've seen my contribution to Augustine's hub in recognition and honor of you...I hope you scroll back to see what's been said by so many others about your generous nature and loving soul. Your words always buoy me. It is such a gift to see your name here in comments. Thank you so much.

To all... I promise to find the time to visit you more often...it's about time, isn't it!! Much love to all, Kathy

Your words bring many pictures and memories to mind. It seems such a sweet farewell yet the ache of knowing you will never be together again -- it is quite piercing. There have been several times in my life when I have said good-bye to someone (almost casually) not knowing I would never see them again.

You have raised feelings to the surface of my consciousness that leave me deeply moved.

Thank you, dear Kathy.

Hello my dear Maralexa. You know, it was the middle of the night; I awoke with the first stanza of this poem. i imagined walking away; leaving and all that it entails. The image was so very clear..the words just followed. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences of situations like this...I believe we've all felt this way. thank you my friend. Hope all is well...I am always hoping......Kathy

Beautiful poetry here, I'm glad we just met, its tough to deal with detachment issues in life, but this poem makes it sound easy, like the person was so ready to let go. Nicely done, oh and also proud of letting go too.

Oh, I'm crying and my tears falling down my cheeks at this moment, because from the very start, thoughts of my beautiful and trusting companion and best friend Max came to mind. I drove away, and the last look of him was his bright, innocent eyes looking after me as if to say "We'll meet again; perhaps today". . .I miss him so! So sad and painful but what a beautiful poetry. Just Brilliant!

Hi SanneL, thank you so much for such a nice comment. I can see how you would imagine this poem speaks of your experience...I'm sorry you had to go through that separation. As anyone knows, animals are #1 in my life and, so many times, for so many reasons, this 'goodbye' has been repeated amid much sadness and feelings of emptiness. We continue on doing what we can to fill the space and save another one. Thank you for your visit and kind words.

Hi anusujith. I appreciate your visit and comment. Sincerely.

This brings back memories of holding our dear animals with their trusting eyes as that final injection ended their mortal lives when we had to have them put to sleep. So sad. I also remember the feeling of saying the final goodbye to a dear friend in the hospital who was dying of cancer. When we exited the room, we knew that we would never see him again in this life. Of course, the more recent silent goodbyes to my mother as she lay dying...oh dear! Your poetry is powerful and evocative. All votes up but funny.

OMGoodness, this brought tears to my eyes. It seems that no matter how long time has passed the pain of putting an animal, best friend, down still is heart wrenching. As Peggy says too, we have had to lay to rest both my husband's parent in the last 4 years. What we say at the viewing is something like your poem.

Lucky Cats profile image

Lucky Cats 4 years ago from The beautiful Napa Valley, California Author

Hi my dear friends Peggy and Lady G.

Peggy, I am sorry to hear of your mother's recent passing...I do know how this feels. It was the same with my father; when he was placed in induced coma in order to flush his lungs (Lamage) and, I knew he'd never come out of that state, even though that was the hope. And, yes, you are so right about holding our beloved animals as they pass..during the most humane act we can give at that moment.

Lady G, you are so right; it doesn't matter the passing of time; that memory and the value of a companion is never lost. The sting might soften just a little but, the emptiness remains. You have my deepest sympathy for the recent loss of your mother and father in law...very very difficult time.

When this poem came to me; it was in the early am hours..an image of one of my kitties was an image I held. It doesn't pertain to a particular event; but speaks to the over all bewilderment and sorrow of knowing it is the last time ... as it turns out; I believe we can all relate to this sadness.

When it is time to say that final fare well to one of my animal companions, I am always holding them close and whispering familiar words and sounds to soothe them from this world to the next. This is where "walking away" would never apply..I must be there for them as I know you are, also.

Thank you so much for these warm and kind comments you two. Very very much appreciated! Kathy

Oh my..! Well I'm glad I was not in his shoes. I would be lamenting my loss. There are times when we make decisions that involved people, who might've gotten hurt, but was carried out no matter what. The deepness of your words tell me that you have grown wiser and capable of raising from your own ashes. Thanks for sharing this fine piece Kathy!

Lucky Cats profile image

Lucky Cats 4 years ago from The beautiful Napa Valley, California Author

Hi there Joseph; aka Lord de Cross...I appreciate your indepth dissection of this poem...you know, this has, of course, been the case...walking away; knowing and yet; also knowing and believing it was the right thing to do. When it comes to broken liasons; yes....this was/is the right thing to do...funny how, after the fact, we might see a little more clearly or with a kinder sense of understanding...which softens reality or our perception of it. so, Yes; this can speak to the end of relationships. Thank you for your astute and keen sensitivity. Kathy
