Spanish Themed Wedding Ideas

A Spanish Themed Wedding: Fire and Passion

A Spanish themed wedding combines high drama, vibrant color and intense romance. And few languages express the fires of passion quite as well as Spanish.

There are so many ways to give your own wedding a romantic Spanish flair. Consider the following, either as a whole, or in mix-and-match combinations:

Spanish Themed Wedding Venues

The right venue sets a magical tone for your wedding. Consider these beautiful possibilties:

  • Spanish mission
  • Monastery
  • Spanish hacienda-style resort or hotel
  • Ranch with picturesque grounds
  • Spanish-style gardens

Decorate with wrought iron lampstands or chandeliers, garlands incorporating deep red roses or traditional orange blossoms, and use antique Spanish colonial furniture for the wedding dinner.

Spanish-themed weddings often take place at a church or cathedral.

Spanish Themed Wedding Invitations

Give your wedding invitations a touch of romance by:

  • sprinkling red silk rose petals into the envelope
  • selecting cardstock with an antique or parchment look
  • using a design with a black lace, Spanish tile or wrought iron motif
  • choosing a design with a splash of vivid color, rather than an all-white invitation

The Wedding Party

Consider these Spanish-inspired ideas for the wedding party:

  • A wedding gown with a touch (or more) of color. Many Spanish brides wear wedding gowns accented with black lace trim. Others prefer color and choose gowns brightened with vibrant floral embroidery.
  • A mantilla lace bridal veil, with or without the traditional Spanish comb.
  • Antique jewelry for the bride, such as a silver necklace or ropes of black pearls
  • Fringed and embroidered silk shawls for the bridesmaids
  • Bridesmaid's dresses with flameco-inspired ruffles, especially if the bride's gown also has them
  • Beautiful lacy Spanish fans instead of floral bouquets for the bridesmaids
  • A matador's jacket and tailored black slacks for the groom. Matador's jackets may be embroidered with black or silver beadwork

The Romance of Latin Music

The warm notes of a Spanish guitar make a lovely accompaniment to this romantic wedding theme.

  • Consider hiring a Spanish wedding singer to render the drowsy, sensuous "Besame Mucho," or "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman."
  • Or, engage a classical guitarist to perform selections such as the gorgeous "Aranquez," or "Asturias," named after a breathtaking mountainous region in northern Spain.

Spanish Wedding Feast

A Spanish wedding feast may include delights such as

  • seafood paella, a spicy dish of rice, shrimp, onions, tomatoes and peppers
  • sangria, a red wine punch with sliced citrus fruit
  • wedding cake with almonds and fruit
  • Spanish wedding cookies, rich almond or pecan cookies dusted with powdered sugar
  • flan, a creamy custard

The wedding cake might be:

  • a deep red cake covered with intricate white lacework, finer than the finest wedding veil
  • a simple white tiered cake with black ribbon and accented with a single red flower
  • a cake painted to resemble an intricate silk shawl or embroidered wedding blouse

Spanish Wedding Reception

If you want excitement at your wedding reception, it's a sure bet that flamenco dancers will set it on fire. You might also engage a larger band to play samba, tango or mariachi dance music.

And after the reception, it's tradition for the bride and groom to be showered with orange blossoms or rose petals and greeted by wedding fireworks to give them a joyous sendoff into their new life together.

Hi Matt! Spanish/classical guitar always sounds good to me. And Andrea Boccelli's cover of "Besame mucho" would melt lead.

I tend to think instrumentals for a wedding, though. If you're going for dreamy and slow, try some Brazilian samba music. It's almost hypnotic.

Thanks for dropping by!

Molly, lovely ideas. Do you have any other Latin music recommendations? If so, I'd be inclined to check out your suggestions. Thanks for this! Voting up, beautiful. Matt

Peggy, there's a lot to be said for elopement. My aunt and uncle once seriously offered to pay for my cousin's honeymoon if she'd elope. In the long run, it figured to cost them a lot less money lol!! (P.S., she turned it down and had a wedding anyway). Thank you for the votes and your kind words!

This sounds like a lovely idea. Not exactly like our wedding almost 42 years ago. If you want a laugh read my hub titled My case and story for wedding elopement. It is just about a 180 from your lovely suggestions in this hub. Voted up and useful. Maybe next time! Haha!

Lol Drbj, I wish you could wave a magic wand and send some to me right now! Yum, yum! And maybe you could do a hub on Cuban weddings. Thanks for your kind comments!

What lovely ideas for a Spanish wedding, molly. I've been to a few here in Miami although they are more Cuban-flavored than Espana but lovely nevertheless. Paella, sangria and flan are practically national dishes here now.

Ah shucks, you are making me blush.

I had that movie and love it. Only recently, I gave it away to someone who had never seen it. I do know what you mean about getting sidetracked. I get into research and run down rabbit trails for hours. It is fun though.

Hyph, it's an honor to be graced by a *Hub of the Day Author*!! :-) Thank you for the read and your kindness. Yes, Spain and its customs are so romantic. I wish I could have used a big ol' honking photo of Johnny Depp in his Don Juan costume, but alas....and you wouldn't believe how much time I wasted writing this because I got sidetracked on wedding gowns and wedding cakes. Some of them qualify as such high art that they should be on display at the Louvre.

I'll have to check out "Say Yes to the Dress." It sounds like fun.

Thanks for stopping by!

This is lovely. It makes me want to have a wedding-just the wedding mind you! I think the Spanish wedding would be so unique here in America. sigh

I love Say Yes To The Dress. Perhaps you might send this to them for ideas! You might even end up on the show.

Hi Teaches, thanks for stopping by! Yes, Spain is a romantic place on an ordinary day, and for a wedding (or honeymoon) it would be heavenly. Might be a good place to go husband hunting in the first place, too...just saying...;-)

That reception picture is so dramatic and wins me over for a wedding at Seville! This would be a very romantic setting and one that would make your wedding a dream come true.
