Gay Rights

Gay Rights

Although I should be in bed as my day starts early I decided that I could not put this to rest or it would haunt me through the day. I am almost certain I may get a backlash or two from some and I am a Christian however I cannot any longer be quiet about the rights of Gay and Lesbian couples. I have researched and observed many couples in my field of work and I do have to say that it does not matter if you are heterosexual or homosexual , love does not have any ethnicity or preference as love is for any individual who embraces there beliefs ,thoughts and committments. Gay and Lesbian is not a disease or Satanic thing and God made all of us in his own image and as Christians we believe that,so we do not have any right to point fingers or become critical of others as God says "Judge and you to Shall be Judged." I respect my Christian Brothers and Sisters and I love the Lord with all of my heart, however I also have some of the most wonderful friends who are Gay and Lesbian and who are married. At first it was hard for me to accept the marital aspect however after having a friend since the 3rd grade who is Lesbian and multiple times tried to commit suicide as she did not understand why she like women, the final conclusion was she could not change her feelings, thoughts or emotions as she was created that way. All are entitled to there rights and regardless of what laws may pass, we are all guilty of rearing our ugly head and arguing our opinions however we should not always try to cast our religion into the situation. We as humans should lead by example and embrace and accept others for who they are , and not be so concerned about what someone is doing in there bedroom.

Gay and Lesbian couples should have the same rights as all others and idle gossip is a sin. Instead of talking about what they are doing talk to them and listen as we may end up having a better understanding. We have to work on saving ourselves first ,before we can save other souls. How can we be Christ like , if we are being hypocritical, judgemental, and listen to idle gossip? We should not judge what we do not understand. How many of us love Ellen and Rosie and our Christians? How many loved Liberace or Rock Hudson and called themselves Christians? We should be concerned about our communities, and our Country and stop worrying about who should be married or what types of medical insurance should not be offered to Gay and Lesbian couples or if they should marry everyone who is created is created equal and all our entitled to there rights.

I honestly think your lesbian friend was not created that way, maybe she was made to be that way, but not originally created that way.

I believe God made us to enjoy sexuality in all it's forms. Everyone is bi-sexual in my opinion and it they say they are not they are in denial. There is nothing wrong with having 'preferences' however. I just celebrate all of life and all of life is precious to me. I suppose I would call myself a 'mystical sexual' person in that I find no boundaries in my sexuality.

Gloria. Your perception is not real clear as love is based on committment and God has placed people together for a reason he did not say to be promiscous with your sexuality. I appreciate your thoughts however.

Well you have indeed picked a hot topic...yet I thought I would share my perspective on the subject from a point of view of my knowledge of Lesbians and Gays and from my experiences in the Navy.  First, I believe the lesbians and gays have rights.  Maybe they cannot marry in most states and receive the respect of a traditional marriage understood to be between a man and a woman, but most certainly I know gays and lesbians can and do live together and are accepted in society when they make it happen in a way that makes them both happy and fulfilled.  They can buy property jointly, they can live together within the law, they can reach-out in the community and be respected, they can work in the work place (often openly) and they can in many cases adopt children if they so desire.  So I am not of the opinion that Gays and Lesbians are singled out and deeply discriminated against by the laws of the land.  They can form Legal Partnerships and even form businesses where  they can sign up to group health plans....and what is kind of neat is...they can receive one hundred percent of their own social security checks when eligible...where traditional man/woman married are discriminated against by our government whereby one of two spouses benefits are cut nearly in half because of the "legal" marriage.  I would be better off to divorce my wife and live with her so we can both earn our SS benefits equally.

As for the military...of course the policies are discriminatory.  I sat on the Naval Discharge Review Board for a year and saw the laws change to make it mandatory to grant a discharge "under honorable" conditions to those lesbians and gays discharged with less than honorable discharges.  And it was my duty and my honor to help those receive the proper discharge for their earned service to our country.  Some day it may be possible to get "don't ask, don't tell" changed....and some day the rights issues will balance in the name of "partnerships".

I know this does not answer the mail when you see a wonderful person denigrated and damaged by narrow minded and mean spirited judgmental asses.  But there are ways to seek place and harmony and peace without batting your head against a brick wall just to be idealist and make a point.  Thank you for this topic...and I hope I have not offended you with this note....it is just my own opinion.

Seaphot, You have not in a shape or form offended as I value and respect your opinion. I know it is a hot topic and I appreciate when others place there thoughts as we can all gain insight from each other and are continually on learning curves. Thank you for your thorough response. :)

AEvans, you are certainly a compassionate and caring person, it is not wonder you chose nursing for a career. I agree with you on most points. Gay and Lesbians are really not bad people at all, they just have a different sexual preference. I honeslty believe they simply cannot help it. Studies have even shown that male babies who are exposed to too much estrogen in the womb can become "gay'. For those who are against L/G, they should just thank God everyday that they were born "normal".

There is just a few things that do irritate me about L/G and that is ...they don't have to push their lifestyle into the forefront and expect everyone to approve. People in general would be much kinder to L/G if they would refrain from asking for gay rights, as Seaphot says in his comment, they already have rights, they can do everything a married couple does. They is really no reason for them to want a legal marriage, they already enjoy all the legal benefits of marriage. What they do not enjoy is the spiritual aspects of marriage because L/G marriages are not legal, nor should they be. This is a Christain nation after all, and we may love the L/G population but they are pushing too far when they want to be married under the laws of God.

There are many Christains who are simply asking that L/G not push their lifestyles on the rest of us and act as if that lifestyle is normal, because it is not normal in the eyes of God. We don't need these thing rubbed in our faces. L/G need to back off, live their lives quietly and not rock the boat. If they take this approach people would be much more accepting.

I hope I did not hurt anyone's feelings. I have gay friends who I love just like any other friend. I have even gone to the ceremonies where they were "married". It was not a church wedding, but my friends are happy with it nevertheless. My gay friends do not take to the streets and demand rights and carry on, they are happy with what they already have, and they RESPECT my Christain values.

I am not saying that L/G should feel ashamed, Lord knows they already went through hell with being that different, all I ask is that their lifestyle not be imposed on the rest of us. Live and let live.....

I have wonderful friends who are both Gay and Lesbian and yes some do push but others do not. That is the same as the heterosexual population many tell them how they should be and we should be concerned about other things. I could not ask for any better friends and I have had one since 3rd grade and she is my best buddy. Mine friends respect my Christian values as well. Thank you for the comment. :)

AE I totally agree with your viewpoint. Some Christians, particularly so called Evangelicals, find it all to easy to condemn and judge gays as well as people of other faiths. This isn't what Jesus taught, however. He taught us to love those with different beliefs and lifestyles.

It never fails to amaze me how some committed Christians think it is OK to hate someone because of their lifestyle and some extremists even think it is OK to murder someone because they work in an abortion clinic, for example. But Jesus said "love your beighbour". I believe he meant regardless of race, religion or sexual orientation.

You are correct that we should love our neighbors as ourselves and not a single christian should condemn I always as myself WWJD "What would Jesus Do?" Thanks for commenting on this article.:)

I totally want Gay marriage Illegal it makes me sad that hundreds of people can't marry the people they love or therefore be judged about it we let african american people here and we didn't fall apart no one died from it we became stronger and we shouldn't be shutting them out because they love the same sex there love life has nothing to do with us and it is unfair so I support this article!

AEvans profile image

AEvans 8 years ago from SomeWhere Out There Author

Lovetodance, We cannot put african americans in the same category we didn't let them in, there descendants were brought against there will so I am certain that how you phrased it was a mere boo-boo. All people have rights you are absolutely correct however african american is a race and gay and lesbian is a lifestyle so it isn't in the same category. I however am glad that you want it legalized and I appreciate your sincerity and comment.:)

I can't see how in the world you would not agree 100% with Lovetodance's comparison between African Americans being granted equal rights and with gay deserving the same treatment as everyone else. The point you make about African Americans being brought here against their will holds no relivance to her analogy at all, but since you started the trend of being overanalytical I will happily join the party and offer this nugget of pure clarity: If you really look at this situation properly you will be able to see that gays were brought here against their will, remember we are talking about a natural occurance and not a choice. The subject of equal rights no matter of color or sexual orientation is all relivant to the discussion. We should never seperate equal rights as if one group holds more importance than the other because once we do that we are dimishing the word equal. All people equal No EXCEPTION.

AEvans profile image

AEvans 8 years ago from SomeWhere Out There Author

Let me reiterate you cannot compare African Americans to Gay and Lesbians , one is a race the other is a lifestyle. We can however agree that all should be treated equally as I fully do so I believe my verbage wasn't clear and it happened to be taken out of context. I realize it is a natural occurrence I am not a nurse for nothing, however again let me me reiterate one is race the other is lifestyle need I say nothing more?

How do I get through to you Helen Keller? You made no point. You made a statement but no point. While making no point and somehow arbitrarily dropping the note that you are a nurse for God knows what reason (talk about out of context) you were so oblivious as to say you were taken out of context while everything remained linear. LOL do you even know what being taken out of context means? LOL... Scratch the question mark because I already know the answer LOLHere are your own words. I didn't want to take you out of context so I copied and pasted your exact ramblings. "I realize it is a natural occurrence I am not a nurse for nothing, however again let me me reiterate one is race the other is lifestyle need I say nothing more?"The thing you have failed to understand is on the subject of equal rights race and sexual orientation are all equal and neither one holds priority over the other... because... (come on say it with me now) thats what equal rights are all about. What are equal rights all about? ... Come on... Come on... Equal rights are all about.... Screw it I don't have all day the answer is equality. I really want to get through to you so I'm going to explain it to you in another way. Don't worry I'm not going to have you answer this time because our participation activity just didn't work. This time I'm going to use a fun little analogy using fruits. The subject is fruits. The variables are fruits meaning we can talk about many different types of fruits such as apples oranges and bananas and still be on the subjects of fruits. Now if we were dealing with fruits on an equal realm such as weight it wouldn't matter what type of fruit we were weighing as long as the standard of measurement stayed equal. Even though apples and bananas are different 1 pound of apples will always weigh the same as 1 pound of bananas. That is what equality is about. Do you see how this applies to people, how people can be different but equal?WATER HELEN WATER!

Thanks for your comments I am happy to post your opinion as i am certain that it does make you better to express yourself. Choose to call me what you wish as you analogies are your choice. However you cannot compare a race with a lifestyle?

AEvans profile image

AEvans 8 years ago from SomeWhere Out There Author

mmm. Helen Keller well certainly she may have been blind however she was far from dumb. I see that you have really did your homework. Upon taking a consensus with my GLBT friends as well as my friends who are black the consensus is in, you cannot compare the two. We all understand equality as that is what the article is about however , what many are trying to figure out is why would you compare Black vs GLBT when one is a race and the other is a lifestyle? Why did you not compare women vs GLBT? I am certain that we as well had to fight for equality and still are, would you not agree? You compared it to a color or should I paint that out for you too. Equality does not have a color , as to me the color of equality is "CLEAR"

We, the people, suffer because we wonder how our life is going to be. But we don't know it, it is impossible. And we suffer for it.

Our mind move continuously in the fear. That why we need to undertand everything. Like the Buddhist say "There isn't any knowledge" as soon as you know something the situation change and we have to learn about it again.

So we have to life the present. In the present everything is it ok, there isn't any problems, we are safe.

When we think about tomorrow, the problems knock to the door of our house, situations that we don´t know how to solve appeared and we are worried again.

So we just have to accept us the way we are. This mean we are going to be like that for ever? No, nothing in this life is forever. Even our Beautiful Sun will disappear some day. We will die. And our thought they come and go like leafs in autumn. Every single thought come and think It will be there forever, and the next second come another thought telling us exactly the opposite and also thinking it will be there forever. It like tennis the ball go from one side to the other. And any beat of the player we think it will be the last, but it is not.

So, we have to know that problems are always inside us. And they are our effort to accept the present. And our worries that they will be forever.

See the problem like something that it will be gone soon. See yourself always like some beautiful, marvellous and enjoy your life in any of its unique and wonderful moments.

I was in the same situation that your friend many years ago. I discovered that love is just a question to know someone that really makes you feel great, it doesn´t mind man or woman.

Just live your life out of fear. Set you free. Do what you want. Look for what you need. And remember that life is cyclical and we can change, but love is forever.

I love you all

You are so right about not judging others. Recently I read that even in Indian/Hindu societies there is a slow change where parents are approving and even priests are willing to conduct gay marriages: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/msi...

Okay, I'm confused AEvans, are you saying that being Gay is a "choice" or a something that we are born with. I can tell you one thing, I sure didn't choose to be Gay - just fyi!

William:What I am saying is that it is not a choice people are born that way. I apologize for the confusion.
