Give Me a Cowboy Any Day- Why Today's Metrosexual Male is Unattractive to Women

A Cowboy
A Cowboy
A Typical Metrosexual
A Typical Metrosexual

I'll admit. My man isn't a sharp dresser. There are times when his shoes don't match his belt. He is more comfortable in his t-shirt. He can be crude and masculine. He could care less what his hair looks like and he doesn't wear cologne. He gets dirty fixing the car or mowing the lawn. However, I wouldn't change any of this about him. He is all man, rugged, hairy, uncompromising, strong, and not to mention.. HOT!

Today's "Metrosexual Male" can be defined as an urban dwelling professional male who enjoys shopping, getting the latest hair cut, and accessorizing his wardrobe with glamorous shoes, belts, ties, and jewelry. He does not have time to do his own yard work, and frankly it is below him. He pays the common folk to do these chores. He has the latest gadgets, trinkets, and grooming products. He is a straight male who goes on the occasional date as long as it doesn't interfere with his shopping schedule but he rarely finds a female that compares to his own reflection. This sensitive new man will be glad to meet you at the coffee shop and have a good cry with you over your tiff with your BFF.

It is a good thing that metrosexual males have themselves and their metrosexual friends to admire because today's woman isn't interested in dating him.

Women are naturally drawn to "bad boys" or strong, protective males based on years and years of survival and evolution. When a woman is in the company of a metrosexual male, she can not pick up his pheromones over the expensive designer cologne and feels as if she is in the company of a female friend. Nothing about the metrosexual male makes a woman feel attractive, protected, pursued, or womanly. He won't shower you with genuine compliments because he is absorbed in himself. Because of his expressed femininity, females are uncertain of the metrosexual man's orientations and won't ask him out.

What is it about the Cowboy that is so appealling to woman? Many things.. his uncompromising dedication to integrity, his own values, his steadfast ways, and his unwaivering sense of self. You could never sway a real cowboy into getting the latest Justin Beiber haircut or anything else to make him more popular. He is his own man.

If you are looking for a real man with deeper values, sex appeal, grit, and masculinity.. the metrosexual male is not for you. Personally, I would prefer a cowboy any day.

Don't squat with your spurs on. ~ Anonymous

Speak your mind, but ride a fast horse.

Why We Love Cowboys

Be it the way a cowboy looks in his jeans or the way he treats the ladies with respect, the cowboy is an American icon that isn't going away any time soon. He oozes masculinity, has self confidence, and has an aura of mystery that metros just don't have.

Hello, tammyswallow,

"Metrosexual male." Wow, that is very clever and a new one on me. I really do like that description and I am going to borrow it from you.

Anyway, I live in NYC and this town is teeming with metrosexual males -- and I guess I am one myself.

However, I admire you very much for the way you view your husband. It shows that you are a very deep woman who is not swayed by the superficial, as is so often the case with people nowadays.

Your outlook and insights are quite refreshing.

Feenix, it is a pleasure to meet you and I appreciate you stopping by to read this and to comment. Living in a big city like New York, it is probably more of a mandatory thing for men to be immpecably groomed (which does not mean Metrosexual..). If you read it, and because you appreciate the fact that I am not superficial, you are not a shallow person either!

Try being anything but a so called metro-sexual male in today's job world. Be a hippie, do not shave, have piercing or tattoos and it gets hard to find a job real fast. If I had my choice I would go Goth every day, unfortunately I have to dress like all the other slaves.

Im not a cowboy but I'm certainly no metro. I think it's a stupid look. My wife and I, when we dress up, we usually go out in the style of the 30's and 40's, and people comment and such. I almost always have a fedora :-)

That's a relief. I could never do what it takes to be a metrosexual. During the late seventies I walked into my junior high school restroom and saw seven guys wearing platform shoes lined up at the mirror with blow dryers and hair spray all going at once. It was sooo wrong. It was plain tee shirts, sneakers, jeans, and messed up hair for me from then on. I later learned the value of short hair. Too bad I am in no way a cowboy. You have to earn those boots. Oh well, no one is perfect.

This was fun to read! I'm in the minority here but that wouldn't be the first time LOL. I agree... If you got the 'cowboy' guy... I must say I had the 'biker and rocker' type... If I only have to choose among metrosexual guys, I would rather become a celibate. Lol. Maybe there is really something about those rugged and masculine guys that makes us women go gaga over them.

Great hub. You got me with this one! :D

JayeWisdom profile image

JayeWisdom 4 years ago from Deep South, USA

You may all disagree with me (and that's okay--we're each entitled to our own opinions), but as far as I'm concerned, you can keep the cowboys, biker and rocker types!

I was married to (and divorced from) two "macho" men who made years of my life miserable. The true love of my life (definitely not one of my husbands) probably fit better into the metrosexual mold than the macho one even though he was very much a man with masculine traits. His personality, character and self-esteem allowed him to be sensitive, understanding, considerate and kind, and to empathize with a woman's feelings and emotions.

I think men who are reared in families with multiple strong women (mother, sisters, grandmothers, aunts) and whose fathers and other male figures during their growing-up years don't feel threatened if they aren't acting super-macho or exuding testosterone through their pores and in their actions 24/7 are more apt to not feel threatened if they aren't "rugged" and "super-macho" themselves.

At this stage of my life, it really doesn't matter, but if I had it to do over again, knowing what I now know, I'd avoid the cowboy/biker/rocker/military/"man's-man"/he-man types like the plague! I feel certain I could have saved myself a lot of grief had I done so....

JayeWisdom profile image

JayeWisdom 4 years ago from Deep South, USA

I forgot to mention the well-dressed, well-groomed part of the metrosexual description. What's wrong with a man who looks like he stepped out of GQ magazine and smells like a pleasant men's cologne rather than the "natural" odor of sweat? Clean nails and calluses removed from a man's hands don't make him non-masculine, either, and a great hairstyle just adds points. As I said before, this is just my opinion, ladies, but I really believe a lot of women would agree with me...particularly over the long haul.

tammyswallow profile image

tammyswallow 4 years ago from North Carolina Author

Thank you for reading thesingernurse! I like the rocker and bikers too and I agree that being alone is better than settling for a metrosexual. I appreciate your comment.

Hi Jaye Wisdom,

I appreciate you taking the time to comment. I understand what you are saying about the type of man that is too rough. There is nothing acceptable with any type of man who doesn't treat you with love and respect. I am sorry you had to go through that.

Groomed men are a bonus! The kind I refer to are those who are obsessed with their appearances and those that take longer to get ready than I do.

I am talking about the shallow types of metrosexuals who don't have much substance beyond their appearances. It doesn't sound like you well groomed guy was shallow! Thanks for sharing!

There are so many of us ladies searching for the same thing. It gets exhausting always having to be the strong one, the one who takes care of everything, and the one who runs the house and earns a paycheck. It seems women have feminized the men into being super sensitive, crying, well groomed, girlfriends and there isn't much testorone left.Great thoughts and not cheesy. Hi Tammy,

Great Hub, and I must admit: I saw the comments on my home feed, and HAD to read more. I couldn't help but laugh at your description of MSM, because it sounded like my ex. In fact, my ex had hair products that cost more than mine-- nothing was too good for "numero uno." And from your description of a cowboy, yes, I want one of those. I can share my feelings with girlfriends, but a man should be able to protect me. I fell for a guy who hunted deer, and could have survived on his own in the wild. My ex was scared to kill a spider in the house. He also used a shotgun to kill a rattlesnake in our yard. Can anyone say, "coward?" Yeah, I miss the "manly men" who pursue a women, and are grateful when they have her company. Not the players of today who feed off desperate women who throw themselves at men, then expect YOU to be hip to their playing ways.

Women seem to have spoiled men over the last few decades. Promiscuity has caused the demise of the traditional "manly man." Where are the gentlemen? Do I have to move to a southern state to find one? California sure is loaded with the metrosexual kind.

Oh well, I guess it's up to ME to defend myself out here on my little ranch. Your Hub made my day for fantasizing about what would be nice in a man. Thanks!

No shortage of these types of men in Vancouver. I'm personally not attracted to that type but I am a little curious about their ways. Some of my dearest friends are MSM and they are amazing individuals. I wouldn't want them with me on a camping trip, or broke down on the side of the road but they have their own sweet charm :D

My honey is somewhere in the middle, well groomed, cares about his style and hygiene but can get down and dirty (minds out of gutter) when needed. He makes me feel safe and protected and smells pretty damn good.

Cowboys... they would be at the other end of the spectrum for me but I am also curious about their ways...wait a minute, Blake Shelton? Is he a cowboy or a MSM because I might be wrong about all of this and find cowboys and MS males sexy after-all ;)

I love watching Justified to see Timothy Olyphant wearing jeans and boots and looking like such a man! I'm not anti being well-groomed or dressing well, but a guy should still be a guy. There is nothing more attractive than a truly masculine man!

Your hub is ready for ya Tammy hope you like it, I might have to revise it a bit to perfect the wording, but its the best I could do for now, today was truly hectic.

Thanks for the inspiration though, your hub here was truly sensational, and entertaining as well, I loved it.

Thanks for the hub, voted up! I agree, a lot of the "men" in the world today are too feminine. They need a lesson on how to be masculine. I do not find this type of guy attractive at all. I would much rather have a guy who actually behaves like a guy and shows some masculine traits, not all this "I am the hottest thing around" attitude. It is hard to feel like a lady, to feel protected, or to feel treasured when your guy acts feminine himself and is too absorbed in himself to care about you! Anyway, I am done rambling.......good hub!

Hey I'm a metrosexual! I would rather DIE than be parted from my skintight outfits, tank tops, make up, short shorts, pointed toes, plunging necklines, make up and sleeveless tops! And granted, I am sure some women would still prefer a retrosexual (old-fashioned buttoned up GQ sort of man e.g. Don Draper) over a liberal metrosexual. But that doesn't mean that we're undesirable, it just means that these women are threatened by the fact that we may actually be more beautiful than them! HAHA!

Wow Berenice. Thanks for sharing that. Everyone should do what floats their boats. Perhaps you are on to something.

Hi Tammy! Another great- and funny- hub! My own man is so handy at fixing things, I never realized it until we moved in together. Growing up with a dad who paid everyone to fix things, it's sort of nice to see it all get fixed for free, and right away :) voted up!

Tammy, this hub kept me laughing, and I love the way you wrote it--to the point with no hemhawing and apologies. I assume you intend your readers to understand that "cowboy" is not just the bronco busters.

Some women like trying to compete with metrosexuals; afterall, some are married to them. Yet, I do believe that the he-man, or cowboy type, is most popular. Most real women want guys without all the frills.

Thanks Levertis! You crack me up. I don't know why so many women are content with a "girlfriend", LOL, but if a man spends more time in the bathroom getting dressed, that just doesn't work well for me. Thanks so much for reading.

But Tammy, I love me my skinny jeans! =S AND my tank tops, AND my plunging necklines, AND my cute little shorts!lol And my gymnastic tights, haha

NEVER... Part a man from the things he loves! XD NEVER!!

Uh... ok Bernice The. I would never try to part a man from his beloved things. I think it is wrong to try to change people. I just personally wouldn't date a fellow who in Daisy Duke shorts or tights. :) We can have a mutual respect here. Thanks for stopping by and for sharing your humor.

I don't know why I stumbled into this hub. (Picking myself up off the ground after tripping over your milking hub), but here I am and read your hub I did (sorry, I yoda'd there).

You and my wife would be in complete agreement on what you like, she can't stand the metrosexualness that's actually come out of a lot of Europe. That's where we believe its originated honestly and I hate how it's hit our population quite hard.

And I'm unashamed to say I'm the type of guy that loves to go hunting, fishing, hiking, backpacking, shooting, planting, playing my guitar, singing, riding horses, and getting dirty doing work on my car.

I don't like being stepped on or talked down to.

I'm my wife's big hairy, big armed beast and that's the way she likes me, as she so affectionately puts it.

Lol, this hub was entertaining and completely honest and from the heart! I really hope more men read this to be reminded of who we are supposed to be! I'm voting this up and I think I will share it too. It was short, sweet, and to the point! Great job!
