How to Stay Married for 84 Years!

Married for 84 Years!

An African American couple from North Carolina has entered the 'Guinness World Records Book' for having the world record of the longest marriage for a living couple - 84 years!

Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher married on May 13, 1924. He was born June 10, 1905. She was born December 10, 1907.

How do you stay married for so long? The first thing I noticed is their birth signs. He's a Gemini and she is a Sagittarius. Two compatible astrology signs. Perhaps this is why they came together in the first place. But why so long?

In reading an article published about them in the New Bern Sun Journal the couple said they have no advice and both admit that they did not know they would be married for so long.

They also said that they both share the title of 'boss.'

She says he was not mean, not a fighter and not much to look at. He is the only boyfriend she ever had.

He says she never gave him any trouble, they may have disagreed but they never argued.

They watch TV together but she leaves when the baseball game comes on. They now have separate bedrooms and she says he can stay up until the last ball is thrown.

The couple also have different religions but it did not tear them apart.

He looks towards her with love and concern. She looks towards him for strength and guidance.

They both agree if they had to do it again, they wouldn't change a thing.

Perhaps it is just the respect they had for each other, and the interest in raising a family together. They both seem to possess a sense of fairplay.

I wish them the best!

This is nice. I wish them well. Then you have to live so long to be married so long. I suppose they are very healthy too.

Oh, that is sooo sweeeet! I really like how they both share the title "boss". I guess marriage is really all about sharing. And thank you for sharing this story.

How sweet! I remember a local couple being on the news for being married for 70 years. The husband said the marriage lasted because he learned how to wash dishes :)

Yes, it all is happening in NC - one of my favorite states. They both seem to be bluntly honest with each other and the New Bern newspaper has a great article about them.

Finally, a joyous story to read about, when news is often so negative. This is a true testament to love, respect, kindness and sharing. I wish Mr. and Mrs. Fisher countless blessings. Thanks for posting this story.

Bk Creative,

You not only share healthy tips but healthy relationships!

Marriage really does work! It works when each spouse has the others best interest at heart! There must be mutual, love, respect, trust, and commitment to keep growing together. A good Marriage should be treated as a fine antique, it gets better with age! As always been a pleasure!

Thank you for sharing this inspiring story!

84 years?! Zodiac signs compatability, sleeping separately, being his/her own boss, different religious affiliation...factors of a long time marriages. I think I am ready to be married BkCreative.

Thank you DeBorrah K. Ogans! I should say married 85 years now as time has passes. Seems marriage can work if we learn to appreciate what is unique about each other and remember we are partners. One is not there to be a servant to the whims of the other - which seems too often to be the mentality.

Comaptibiity is so important travel-man1971 - and most likely we know it the minute we meet someone. When we ignore that gut feeling warning us that something is wrong we have to pay attention. Let me know when you get married! You can share some of your happiness with me!

Thank you both for writing such nice comments!

What a sweet story one you don’t hear of everyday. It is really special when you find someone you can share the rest of your life with, these days people break up over the slightest issues. At the end it’s about love, caring and companionship not looks or status or what ever else some people spend the rest of their lives looking for. Thanks for sharing BK!

I think it is so lovely Madison22 to share your life with the right person - that I refuse to share it with someone who is not the right person. And this is in any relationship - not just wife and husband. No miserable job relations or bad neighbors or doomed friendships. Either we are compatible or we are not - it can't be forced.

Thanks for writing. This couple seems to know that letting go sometimes is better than holding on so tightly.

You know Maita - I have a lot of family from down in this area of NC and it seems in olden days they were all hard working couples and had the most respect for each other. Respect is my idea of love! I'm glad you enjoyed the hub.

I spent the weekend with my son and wonderful Daughter-in-Law and we always have such a great, great time. Hope you had a lovely weekend too.

Thanks so much for writing!

What an amazing couple! I have been married for 19 years and if I had it to do over again there are many things I would change. A good marriage is not automatic, you have to work at it!

Hello 2besure! This couple was just on the news this morning - because now they are married 85 years.

Ah, there are many, many things that I would change - like not taking on so many responsibilities. Somehow that was open ended being that I was the female. Yikes!

At the end of the day Respect takes you a long way BK. It never fails regardless of the "relationship" Although you may disagree respect allows you to maintain a consistency that last for a long time. Good for them! Thanks for posting this reminds me that there are those that actually know how to "work things out" #2Bosses lol

I so agree with your reeltaulk. When I am asked what I want in a (any) relationship I say respect. Respect means you cannot do the cruel, thoughtless types of things you would do when you throw out empty words like I love you. Respect means you don't cheat on me or lie to me or discount me or harm me. Respect covers it all.
