Hypnotized by Anger

Mind Hijack

When we are involved in conflict our objectivity is compromised. We lose the power to analyse and reason critically. The situation is too close for us to see clearly. I see it like someone sticking a newspaper under your nose and asking you to read what it says. Unless you move back from it or the paper is moved a reasonable distance from your face you won’t be able to read it.

Anger is an emotion welling up from a part of us that is outside the jurisdiction of our logical conscious awareness.

Once the mind has been hijacked by anger we are no longer free to make informed logical decisions. In a state of anger all our words and actions are spontaneously motivated by the subconscious where reason has no home. In a state of anger the control centre or conscious thinking mind is being circumvented and chaos prevails.

Anger  hypnotises its victims to the degree that their conscious minds are suspended for a time and they are completely powered by feelings welling up from the subconscious. The conscious thinking mind is helpless in the face of such feelings which can be likened to standing in front of a freight train trying to stop it while it is in full flight.

Only by coming out of this trance can we view the situation from a safe distance and break the spell these emotions have upon us. Hypnosis is a way to teach yourself how to separate from such overwhelming feelings so you don't allow them to hijack your mind.

Self Hypnosis to Regain Control

By learning the art of self hypnosis you teach yourself how to deliberately suspend your critical factor and access your subconscious. Gaining access to your subconscious in this way allows you to safely change or even replace the subconscious program that powers the anger. I would however consider this approach only a short term solution until you have also addressed the underlying emotional root cause of the anger. Psychotherapy is an effective way to help you do this.

I am in private practice as a Hypno-Psychotherapist which means that I use this "two pronged" method to eliminate the presenting symptom and also address the underlying root cause. I believe that making the effort to understand the reason for the symptom at the subconscious level is like a parent who takes the time to listen to her child. You can pacify a child crying for a while but ultimately it is in taking the time to find out what the problem is that lasting relief is achieved.

Choosing a Therapist

I highly recommend Hypno-Psychotherapy as an extremely effective method for dealing with symptoms with an underlying emotional root cause. Another label for this kind of therapy is Analytical Hypnotherapy and it is important that you note the difference between Hypnotherapists who only treat symptoms using suggestion and those who use a combination of Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy to also address the reasons for the symptoms.

There are some great therapists out there and it is recommended that you seek help from suitably qualified therapists. In the United kingdom, to find a fully accredited Hypnotherapist of the standard you can trust I recommend you search the NCH website for a therapist in your area.

Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic

My wife and I are both very proud to be one of the first Hypnotherapists to be endorsed by the Department of Health and are both members of the regulatory body for Complementary and Natural Healthcare (CNHC) in the United Kingdom. We have successfully treated a wide variety of conditions using Hypno-Psychotherapy including : Panic Attacks, Anxiety, Depression, Insomnia, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Lack of Confidence, Fears and Phobias, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Smoking, Erectile Dysfunction, Anorexia and Overweight.

We provide everyone who calls us with a Free initial Consultation and during that session we explain what is involved and answer any questions the prospective client may have that are not covered on our website.

Before starting treatment we require that the client learns the art of self hypnosis so we don't waste any time in addressing the problem and its root cause. To do this the client downloads an audio from our website we have created specifically for that purpose. The audio is called "Introduction to Hypnosis". One is with my voice and the other with my wife's voice.Learning the art of self-hypnosis is as easy as simply playing the downloaded audio from MP3 Player or iPod every night in bed for a period of about two weeks. Learning how to hypnotise yourself is a gift you will then have for the rest of your life and which you can pass on to your family and loved ones.

Learn Hypnosis at Home

For those of you who would like to learn how to hypnotise yourself to make the changes you find difficult to make by sheer will power alone I invite you to use the audio I created specifically for this purpose.

My wife has written a hub about this high quality  self hypnosis audio that we require each of our clients to download and play for about two weeks before they start their hypnotherapy sessions with us. By doing this our clients arrive to therapy already able to achieve the state of relaxation saving them time money and stress.

>>> Learn How to Hypnotize Yourself <<<

Anger hijacks our analytical logical thinking mind and it happens without us knowing anything about it. Hypnosis is the deliberate suspension of the protective critical factor in order to regain control in situations where you once lost control. I think this is a good enough incentive for anyone to learn the Art of Self Hypnosis, don't you?

Boy do I ever get hynotized by anger, almost every single day and it sucks. When I get angry everything around me seems to go in slow motion and fade out like in a movie. I see myself grabbing, hitting or just throwing something at the person that upset me just to shut them up. I come out of that fog and see that I'm still at the sink washing dishes. I either remove myself from the same space the person is or ask them to go away until I am able to take a deep breath again. I would love to see someone like a hypnotherapist, it sounds beneficial to me.

Hi Julie2 I highly recommend it but do not start therapy unless you are completely comfortable with the therapist. The key ingredient to your success in this kind of therapy is rapport. So take your time looking for the one that is right for you.

Thank you for commenting.

Hi, I tend to lean towards the panic attacks than anger attacks, you named it really well when you stated, I think on your profile, that we are shipwrecked. that is exactly how it felt when I started to get panic attacks, I know the cause, and, ironically I trained to be a councilor after studying psychology. but as the old saying goes, physician heal thyself! of course that doesn't work. I only had to take one more course to qualify, but felt I couldn't help other people because of my own problems! catch 22!

Interesting article SW, I especially liked "Once the mind has been hijacked by anger we are no longer free to make informed logical decisions. In a state of anger all our words and actions are spontaneously motivated by the subconscious where reason has no home." Very well described. =:)

Hi Nell,There are as many ways to heal as there are people. And I personally feel that it is the "wounded healer" who is the most effective. Perhaps your writing is the medium through which you have chosen to heal. Thank you again for your comment and personal experience.

Hi Winsome, I appreciate your comment and look forward to reading more of your hubs. Thank you.

I totally agree with this and am delighted to be your new fan:)

I often say you can't be in the middle of a situation and be the judge, and when angry - it's not a good time to talk. I like to think about my problem more in depth after I've had a chance to cool off.

Great hub! Thank you!

I truly understand you. Anger is an emotion when expressed is capable of injuring another person's mind. It leaves us in regrets, so the best way to fight it is to control it. Great hub

Hello there Spirit. Glad you pointed out the difference between those that use only suggestion- have heard numerous friends say they felt ripped-off when this method was used in large groups for cig cessation- and hypono/psycho therapists like you and Mary. This is a fine article with a real solution to those with anger management problems.

Hello Alastar, thank you for reading this and your comment explains why our profession is often viewed with scepticism.

There are people out there as in any profession who are in it to make a fast buck and they leave the wrong impression and even sometimes do a lot of damage not only to the people seeking their help but to the good work done by practitioners of alternative medicine.

We are very lucky to be doing the work we do as we found it very rewarding. We benefit from providing the treatment as much as the people who receive it.

I miss reading your hubs, when will you publish your next? HubPages doesn't always notify so please let me know when you do ok.

Ah Dear friend, perhaps you'd like to take a gander at "The Psychic Medium Daniel Douglass Home Comes Clean." Would really like your thoughts on him. Do hope you and Sister Mary have a pleasant week-end.
