I Love You if...:: Short Story
"Darling..." said Grace softly as Ed is busy watching the News on TV, "...dinner is ready!" Two minutes go by and an aircraft explodes in mid air somewhere in Africa and Ed ups the TV volume as the hungry reporters' voices flood the room...Grace's mind is engrossed in something else & she gets busy setting the table. She's made Ed's favorite curry and cant wait to get his attention on her new hairdo. Moreover, she has something really important to talk to Ed about.
Table set, and as she notices Ed still glued to the TV, this time standing up close to the telly with such high volume..."Oh, why do you have to watch the same news for so long? The news reporters keep giving you the exact same information a hundred times in 10 minutes! Come and have dinner please, its getting cold..." At this Ed hushes her trying to grab what the reporter said about the possible terror attack which he misses due to wifeys' comments, so he grunts and pushes the rewind button. Grace feels irritated at this but decides that this could be a good chance to go fix her hair while she secretly plans a way to choke the reporters to death some day.
Ten more minutes and Ed is having a can of beer in his hand and a box of cashews!! "What??" gasps Grace looking all pretty but Ed hardly notices, "And what about the dinner?" "I'm ready, set the table..." Ed says as he hums the latest song from MTV..."At-least the channel is changed, thanks" thought Grace. "Well, look behind you smart guy, the food is already on the dining table and you're still sitting here!" Just then another block buster song is streaming and the volume reaches the roof again...Grace shakes her head and gets the glasses arranged. "I'm guessing you're having your beer along with your food tonight, so no juice for you?" taunts Grace. Ed is still happily jigging to the tunes of his favorite song and hoots at the sexy girls on TV when all hell breaks loose! Power cut!!! "Honey!" calls out Ed, "Are you okay?" as he struggles to reach for the torch.
Still groping in the dark Ed calls out for Grace again, "Honey, where are you?" Now panicking, as he finally gets hold of the torch and lights it, he moves around the room in great speed but cannot find her. "Grace honey, where are you? Please say something..." Ed yells as he rushes from room to room. No sign of her in the kitchen, the bedroom, the bath, the study...Just when Ed grabs his cellphone to call her, "Boo! Caught ya!" shouts Grace as she sneaks up behind him scaring him to bits. "Honey!! what were you doing? Where were you hiding?" "I was hiding in your heart, you just didn't notice." purred Grace as she led him to the dining table. "I was so scared for you..." Ed was still emotional.
That night, Ed & Grace had a wonderful moment of togetherness. As Grace chatted away about her new hairdo and all the nothingness...Her skin was glowing against the reflection of the candlelight and Ed couldn't stop thinking about how much she was important to him. "Honey...I Love You!" whispered Ed. Grace blushed and replied, "I love you too if..." "What is it Grace?" asked Ed. "...if you promise to pay more attention to me; if I feel appreciated & secure; if you promise never to hurt me; if you spend more quality time with me; if you don't judge me by my blaterations. Ed, I Love you anyway, but I still expect you to love me back like you used to when we had met and were madly in love. I love you too much to feel as much happy when you're away on a business trip. I love you when you hold my hand or simply hug me. I am in so much love with you and I have to admit that I cannot function normally without you... Please be by my side always!!! I need you to love me the way I am!"
To this emotional speech, Ed simply responded "Honey, I Love You very much!" and gave her arm a squeeze and embraced her...and the power was back...and so was the loud music on MTV, but Ed paid no attention to anything around him, he was just happy to see his wife so happy as she sobbed in his arms with joy!
