Love at First Site

Ahh, yes. I remember it well. The year was 1980. I was going on 14 years old. The movie was Little Darlings. It was love at first site. His name: Matt Dillon.

The love affair was long lasting. To this day, I get a little weak in the knees when I see him on the big screen. He's never disappointed me. He's never lied to me. He's never killed anyone while drunk driving, never knocked over a liquor store, never found Scientology, never left a 20 year marriage for the 20 year old nanny, never broken my heart.

Matt and I have shared 3 wonderful decades together.

There are many kinds of love. Puppy love, love at first site, first love, addictive love. There's Florence Nightingale Syndrome, lust, crushes, hero worship and the list goes on and on.

And then there is Real Love.

Real love is mature and long lasting. I always say you can tell love is real when you put the other person first. And I don't mean for the easy things like watching his TV shows instead of yours. I'm talking about when you put him first when it comes to the big things. The real things, like missing Christmas with your family to spend it with his, or living in the city close to his work when you'd really rather live in the country. I've talked about this before in other blogs and hubs about compromise. It is the flagship of real love.

Real love stands the test of time. It empowers you, and makes you feel strong and beautiful. Real love is healthy, fortifying, and mutual.

Real love can start as love at first site, or first love, or puppy love, or even lust. Real love can start in many ways: that initial lust, that inexplicable pull of cosmic attraction. And I can understand people who fall into "real love" with a "love at first site" mate, and have never made the distinction between the two. But don't be confused: real love is something separate, no matter how it started.

But that in no way diminishes my long standing love affair with Mat Dillon. It is as strong as ever. He doesn't call, he doesn't write. But *sigh* he still makes me all warm inside just like he did in 1980. He will always be my long standing love at first site.

Veronica, You're so much smarter than the rest of us! I chose Leif Garret and I think we all saw just how much he DIDN'T come through for any of us like your Matt Dillon. You two make a very lovely couple.

I dunno... something about your selection of photos of ol' Matt leads me to believe that there is something else at play here... not so much love... no, something else... Perhaps it is the 75% shirtless nature of the images... ah, yes, that's it! Lust! Good ol' harmless celebrity lust! Maybe you, Matt, me, and Jessica Alba should get together one night for a double-date... :)

this is an excellent hub on the many paths that lead to love and I agree with you. also on matt dillon. he's a bunch of OMG! hot. :o Did you see him in "RumbleFish" with Mickey Rourke? I didn't know which one to drool over most. He was great in "The Outsiders" too.

Of course you can't always trust my taste in men. I think Harvey Keitel is hot too. :o

Oh yeahhhh. Harvey is hot. Very much so.

I'm so glad you agree. He comes off as very safe and protective. He has the personality I love (on screen), kind of a vulnerable tough guy, and while looks are neat and all, I'm really all about a certain personality type in men.

Visual is great to look at, but hot is not superficial.

I wanted to say too, offtopic of hub, sorry it took so long to really chat with you. I used to be much more friendly but I've gone leery over the last few years and watch for a bit first and I didn't know you from when I was here before. You arrived during my sabbatical. I know you understand.

I'm glad to share comments now though with you. You're delightful.

Thanks, I do understand. I'm glad it's a new day. I go through those too. Coming out of one now, with the big post on my blog outing my plagiarist. www.lonelyroadsandpsychopaths.com

I wish I could find for you a link on the dude abides website where he said I was the Winston Wolfe of Words. Only a real Harvey Keitel fan would get that. I fix problems, as a ghost writer.

I'm so impressed with your poems. I thumbs up everything. I felt a connection.

well, at least we don't have to go through that stress alone, anymore. nice quote. :D

you fix problems, I write about being stuck in them. somehow, I think you're the more useful one. hehe

thx on the unpoetry. I think at heart, whichever person we choose to love, the qualities of that romantic love all have the same underlying core. I'm glad you found yourself in them too. :)
