A small explanation of love as a teen

Updated on January 6, 2016

As a teenager going through the many stages of life, it's either very difficult or very easy to "fall" in love with anyone that has any interest in your life. I've known some kids stay faithful from the beginning of high school to university and beyond, however I've known some enjoy the single life very much and don't complain. Sadly, there are going to be times in everyone's life where they have to say goodbye to someone they love, and it's not going to be easy. But what is love, really? How do you know if you love someone?

Simple answer: you don't. You don't know you love someone until you reach the point where you can positively say "I don't know why I love them" because there are way too many reasons to simply explain to a passerby why you have chosen this specific person to love. Is it the way they dress? It could be lust. Is it the way they talk? Possibly an intellectual attraction. Whatever the reason, you have a right to love them and I'm not going to take that from you readers.

Love, for me, a simple 18 year old girl is something I am yet to define and discover. With experience of adolescent love I can safely say that sometimes it doesn't last forever. For my friends, I can say it doesn't last forever. There are going to be stressful moments of your teenage years such as exams, getting the grades to go to university, and your social life is at its peak! The constant struggle of wanting to go out with friends versus needing to revise for the chemistry exam tomorrow morning, and then facing an argument with your partner because you're not talking to them frequently is too much. It doesn't matter how many pep talks you give yourself about the whole situation, you can guarantee yourself that love could be getting in the way a tiny bit.

Getting back to the point. Love, in simple forms, is an ineffable experience. It's unexplainable. You want to describe the one person you care about in every word under the sun, yet you can't help but smile and think of them and hope that someone can read your mind. They are your best friend, worst enemy, parent, child, and occasionally a fluffy pet. You want to help them up when they fall, after you finish laughing and then offer a plaster and a kiss better. You miss them when they're gone, but you know the next time you see them won't be a long wait. You're thinking about that one person right now aren't you?

Ultimately what I'm trying to put across to you reading this is make the most of your school years because you will say to yourself in 20 years time "I wish I studied harder in school and not waste time on (ex partner)". But on the plus side, love is amazing, and the sooner you find it, the happier you will be.
