A Foreign Husband in Cambodia

There is bad news for the prospective foreign husband in Cambodia. The Cambodian government have set an age limit on love. If you a a foreign man and you are aged over fifty then you cannot marry a Cambodian woman. All over the world people fall in love every day. There is no magic formula it is a matter of hormones, mutual attraction, shared hopes and dreams and that aching feeling that you get inside. Love knows no boundaries. Love leaps over the barriers of race, religion, colour, class and age. Love is love and there is no-one anywhere who can put a stop to old young love or young old love.

Cambodia though has decide that they can. Over fifty? You cannot fall in love with a Cambodian woman. The trouble is that Cambodian women are beautiful and such an ill thought out law is going to break many hearts.

Old Young Love

The older man will have his heart broken by the 'Old Young Love' law. The younger man will have his pocket picked. If you are under fifty years of age, yes you can marry a Cambodian woman providing you earn at least $2,580 each month. Here love has a price on it.

There are strong racist implications too in this new law. There is nothing to stop an 80 year old Cambodian man from marrying a twenty year old Cambodian woman. That is wrong! Nothing wrong with the age difference. If they are in love then fair enough. It is the fact that there is no age limit on the Cambodian to Cambodian marriage.

If the law has been put in place to prevent the exploitation of Cambodian women, sham marriages, bride slavery and mail order brides then it is a noble law. It has though been very badly thought out and fails to achieve what it sets out to do.

Men under fifty are as likely to be as exploitative as those over fifty. There is no age limit on deviousness. If you are bad...you are bad and that's it.

What about a fifty year old foreign man marrying a 49 year old Cambodian woman? One year difference. No. Not allowed.

A 49 year old foreign man marrying a 21 year old Cambodian girl? 27 years age difference. Quite okay.

Age difference matters not at all within the love stakes. Neither does colour or creed. Race should not be considered either.

I'm interested in this topic, but I'm confused about your statement: "A 49 year old foreign man marrying a 21 year old Cambodian girl? 27 years age difference. Quite okay"...do you mean a 49 year old Cambodian man marrying a 21 year old Cambodian girl is quite OK?

No Sally. I meant what I said. With the Cambodian man he can marry a girl 18 to 90+ regardless of her nationality.

A 49 year old foreign man can presently marry a 21 year old girl and under the law that is fine, Wait a year...he is 50 and she is 22....it will not be permitted. Unless they go abroad of course. As far as I am aware in any other country in the world this would be permissable.

Dear, dear, they are worse then any other government. Don't they have any other problems?

They appear to be making problems for themselves all the time.

It's always so interesting to learn about other cultures. This is really funny though....must be government at work against the exploitation of young women.

@Cathy I - I think exploitation is at the heart of the matter but this law will not stop it. It needs a different approach.

Interesting Hub, Peter, as well as an interesting life, from your profile. I visited Cambodia in 2001. Like Thailand, another country that you mentioned, they have lots of problems with trafficking and exploitation, some of it coming from outside.

It's unusual for me to comment on these things but nothing in life is without purpose and reasoning, and the internal and external forces - like economics - can be quite strong. There is also tremendous evil, pain and suffering beyond what we don't necessarily see. I'm am sure that you will agree that Cambodia has had its fair share.

The country is recovering from a dark period and still struggles. Serve or strive to inspire; elevate, awaken ... where you can. Suffering ultimately leads us to this space. In Love and Light.
