A very strange event (at least for foreigners) is the match making or people selling in a park in central Shanghai each Saturday and Sunday. Families of men and women who have not found love and marriage are the focus of family members who set out to find them a spouse.
Flyers or one page "advertisements" are prepared that have details about the son or daughter - their birthdate, their occupation, their income, etc are written on A4 sheets of paper and attached by clothes pegs in many cases to smart shopping bags, and the family sit on little stools waiting to communicate with anyone who shows interest.
Some of the advertisements come with photo. They sit and wait all day and then bargain with anyone who shows interest.
There is a section for non Shanghainese, and another one for foreigners and another one for those who are widowed or in some other way no longer with a partner.
It is also a great attraction for visitors who just want to come along and see what is going on.
There are marquees set up and in these are the official marriage brokers, who charge for their services which includes finding the spouse, and assisting with all the wedding plans.
