Valentines history

Valentine's day like most expressive holidays is based on an event that took place by a real individual in history. Or was it the fictitious story of the noted writer Chaucer who is known to put a spin on historical facts to suit his romantic ideals.

He did live in the 400 AD. Born. Died through be heading. Known to be a bishop, in a few accounts.

The story is that he was a priest that refused to stop preforming marriages on the penalty of death. He broke the law of the land to marry young sweethearts, Christian or soldiers in Claudius' army.

Time in history, the events going on.

  • Roman rule
  • Roman law

It also goes, while in jail, Valentine himself supposedly fell in love and in a final note to his beloved signed, 'from your Valentine'.

Not even the Roman Catholic church knows for sure...

Homemade

Home made or hand made means that you took the time and effort and crafted something totally unique and original for the love of your life even if you followed someone else's instructions.

  • paper cards
  • coupons or coupon book
  • heart shaped ornaments or decorations

If it is your first time crafting or returning back to a craft idea since elementary school, go ahead and practice.

Use what you have on hand, old books, magazines, news paper cartoons or even something you had sitting around but never really thought creatively about, like stickers or stamps.

Anything can be turned into a hand made keepsake for your Valentine.

Only your imagination limits you!

Commercialism

Victorian Age

A time in which keeping one's intimate feelings hidden was approved of, all because of some aging widowed queen!

Secret notes and assignations became a popular occurrence.

Modern

The modern thing to do on Valentine's day is to propose.

Neither original or unique, but it can be more memorable because there's lots to cater to the event than at any other time.

  • romantic get a ways
  • jewelry sales
  • candy / chocolate
  • cards

And of course this is the time to celebrate outwardly, easily how one feels about their significant other.

A little showy for my taste but who am i to argue with a day of giving or expressing one's intimate feelings.

Even though it is a bit on the showy side.
