The Perfect Anniversary Dinner Date!

Source

Surprise!

People might say they don't like surprises, but what they mean is, "they don't like bad surprises." Everyone loves a nice surprise, don't kid yourself.

I have been married for 14 years with a total cook time of 20 years together. I still love my husband, very much and better than that - we are still having a great time together. When we have a special day, I love to plan a really nice evening to put my own little signature exclamation point on the date. After all these years, I can still manage to find ways to punctuate our romantic holidays.

This year, I decided to amaze him with a special ordered lobster dinner, delivered Fed Ex from Maine! Lobster is Dave's favorite entree. I knew that he was going to be surprised, I didn't know that I was going to be more surprised than him!

Lobsters delivered to your door from Maine!

I was having so much fun looking at all of the dinner combinations that Dan, Dan, the Lobster Man had to offer that I changed my mind a couple of times. I even changed the entire order after I placed it. I decided I wanted some delicious lobster bisque soup.

My husband loves lobster and we don't have an ocean here in the Midwest. Dave and I have had the opportunity to eat fresh lobster while traveling and we both agree, it doesn't compare to what you get at Red Lobster. I knew that he would be truly surprised with this idea!

When Friday rolled around and the Fed Ex guy pulled up and honked, I was so excited! I ran for the door and made it just in time to hear the driver walking away, chuckling. He turned to me, smiled and waved. I didn't get why he was still laughing but I grabbed my huge 18.6 pound box and brought it in.

I sat it down on the bar stool, it was only noon! I couldn't wait to get that box open! I wanted to see the soup! The cake! Even the dogs were excited and standing at "attention." The box was a nice Styrofoam cooler.

I lifted the lid and MERCY! All HELL broke loose.

I was screaming, claws were clawing, dogs were barking and no one here to witness the madness but me.

They Are Alive!

Live Lobsters from Maine

I did change my order and I know now that I did not pay enough particular attention to the words "frozen lobster tail"....versus "live lobster." I was certain I had ordered frozen tails, as in "no longer with us" tails. As I stared at my new friends crawling all around, scratching at plastic and styrofoam, I realized it no longer mattered what I ordered.

What could I do? Return them? I knew the mistake was my own, but I still had live lobsters to contend with. I slapped the lid back on and called my husband.

"Dave, I ordered a special dinner for our anniversary and I made a little mistake." I was very excited and talking super fast. "I have two live lobsters crawling around and I don't quite know what to do with them, since it's only noon!"

"What?" he said and started to laugh hysterically.

"Yeah, I could have sworn I ordered frozen tails but either way, what the hell do I do with them? They are alive in there! Get home as soon as you can and deal with this, will you?" I said more like a command than a question.

I wanted my baby to come back, but I just wore a mask of false bravado and stashed my living box in the nice cool garage.

Dinner...at last!

Dave and I decided it was show time, so we unpacked our boxes and we each took a task. His was to deal with the living things.

The package I ordered came with Lobsters, Lobster Ravioli, Lobster Bisque Soup, Premium Lobster Crab cakes and a little triple layer chocolate cake! The kit came with instructions and tips for cooking each item. They were super simple and easy to follow. It was merely a matter of reheating everything except the steaks (which I ordered in addition to my package).

Dave cooked the lobsters and fillets and I prepared everything else according to the manual. We were celebrating with our children so the kids set the table and we all had a fantastic time, laughing and working together in the kitchen. I put the music on loud and before long, the scent of lobster filled the air.

To Die For?

The lobster thought so and good thing for me because he was delicious! This food was marvelous. The lobster bisque soup tasted like it had just come from a gourmet restaurant! The ravioli was magnificent. We cooked everything exactly as the recommended instructions and not only was it super simple to follow - but it was divine.

My 12 year old daughter proclaimed that it was the best meal she had ever eaten. That is saying a lot for her, she is really picky and inspects everything so carefully we resorted to calling her, "inspector number 9" and gave her a roll of stickers.

It was so delicious that none of us wanted to stop eating. Eventually we did because we all wanted to have some of that cake!

For any special occasion I would highly recommend ordering a Lobster Gram dinner. While this isn't something most people could afford to do every day - it is certainly worth forking the money out for an anniversary or birthday. I noticed they also have gift certificates and I am already planning to send one to a special person in my life.

I loved spending my anniversary cooking together with my husband and kids. It was certainly an anniversary, I will never forget!

I'm so happy that all turned out so well for you and Dave last night and you had a memorable anniversary. I was telling Al about what happened when the lobsters arrived and I thought he was going to split a gut laughing.

I am now salivating as lobsters one of my favorite seafood's.

Enjoyed reading your hub.

Oh man, this is making me hungry. Another friend wrote about lobsters today and now I want one. Thankfully, I live about 1/2 a mile from the Clinton Marina where they sell live lobster right off the dock. I'm a lucky girl! :)

Hey Susan! It did turn out well and I followed your advice and sent the kids outside during the slaying:) lol Man - it WAS so good! We really had fun but the whole theme all night was an instant replay of me screaming on the phone about living things in my kitchen! hahahaha Joke was on me!

Thanks so much - I know you and Al would love this kind of thing!

You are SO lucky! All I have is the mighty and muddy Mississippi...or the Missouri River and trust me - you don't want to eat anything out of that! There would be no lobsters obviously either! Wah! So it is also - expensive here! A nice lobster dinner would cost around $150 - 200 bucks for 2 people and that is if you don't add alcohol to the tab!

How much fun... You are a braver woman than I am... I probably would have tossed the cooler across the way ... glad everything turned out and what a perfect evening -- cooking together as a family! I have had lobster a few times but this reminded me particularly of a romantic dinner Eli took me on back when we were 19. That was the first time I ate lobster. I flung it across the restaurant because I didn't know how to eat it! :) So much for good impressions. But he married me anyway! :)

haha! Somehow I can totally imagine that scene! Sounds like a scene from a comedy! lol

It was super fun and even Dave thought so! Everyone agreed the food was super awesome though! Really worth it - and that kind of kept me from trying it before - I didn't know anyone that actually had one delivered before. I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend the dough in case it flopped. It was everything they promised me and more because we truly had a blast!! Too bad you and Eli and the kids weren't here!!

Oh to be a fly on your wall, Kelly. I would have loved to see your face when you heard the scratching and then opened the box! Truly a lot to go through for a hub that will eventually pay for that dinner by 2025 or so.

What a great anniversary dinner! I like lobster, but I could never cook one while it was alive. Well, maybe I could. They don't scream do they?

This is a funny one for sure! Nice photos.

Kelly.....this story is adorable. I love the way you and your whole family celebrated together and enjoyed the entire evening. Lobster is fantastic.

My family owned a very popular and successful restaurant in our home town for 40 years. The Specialty of the house was Whole Maine Lobster....flown in weekly, direct from Maine.....

I feel like, "Bubba" from Forrest Gump...(with lobster not shrimp)...because I can prepare lobster in a hundred different ways....Baked/Stuffed lobster, Broiled, boiled, lobster bisque, lobster newburg, lobster cakes, lobster salad.........lol....you get the picture! just like Bubba and his shrimp!!...Happy Anniversary!.UP++

What a "wonderful real housewife" you are indeed!!! Also, a romantic. The rest of us will not allow our husbands to read this one, well, you know . . . can't live up to this. Congratulations! We just celebrated our 34th anniversary last weekend. Oh, it was exciting, as I attended a baby shower for my first grandson to be in October! LOL No romance there, but I hope you keep planning these romantic anniversaries from here to eternity! You are very inspiring to keep the flame alive by going through so much trouble. The live lobsters would have scared me to death, and as you say, figuring out what to do with them until the boiling time comes. This is a very sweet hub. OMGOSH! I am visualizing you discovering live lobsters. LOL It sounds like a lovely dinner, and I am so glad you posted the link. The gift certificate idea sounds like a wonderful idea for any type of gift giving. I am already thinking Christmas.

I am so glad it turned out well for you. It is such a special gesture, and your whole family got to enjoy it. You and Dave cooking it together made me think it was even more special.

Love your song selections. :-)

Congratulations on having a great anniversary! I can only envision the look on your face when you discovered the lobsters. It had to be a true Hallmark moment! lol That's a great idea to order food. Wasn't aware that it could get there quick enough to keep from spoiling! Used to love Gulf Coast crab claws and such. Now, I'm going to have to investigate. Great and fun hub!

Hi Lela - oh that was a hoot! No the lobsters did not scream...in fact mine were pretty quiet but did not go gentle into that dark pot! One sucker tried to back out! I couldn't blame 'em. I could not believe I had to kill my dinne before I ate it...now that was a first! lol

Thanks for all the photo help - see? It is helping!!

Oh I wish I lived closer to ya Paula - I love seafood! It isn't that easy to cook if you want to execute it perfectly. It is so easy to overcook and then ya got tough shrimp and lobster. I have been craving a nice lobster rolll..ummm! Such a sad thing to be a seafood lover and be surrounded by dirty water and fish with names like "carp"! hahaha

Thanks and that is so cool Paula - I didnt know you owned a restaurant! I bet that was a lot of hard work!!

HI Faith! Oh my....can you believe this? lol I swear I thought I ordered the frozen tails. I tried to even check my order but it just happened that they were maintenancing their website for the weekend so I couldn't view my order history. I just told myself, "don't worry Kelly you ordered the perfect dinner!" Ha!

I tell you - I was so shocked when I opened that box and saw those claws all moving around. The dogs knew sometihing was fishy too! hahaha

I ave to remark - 34 years of marriage! Wow - kudos to you and yours my dear!!

Tammy - I am almost glad I screwed up because it was so funny! I mean that is the part I will for sure never forget! hahaha I was surprised as hell and didn't quite know what to do with them. Kept looking at the clock thinking damn...I still have 4 hours now I gotta babysit some crawlers. WOW!!! hahahahah I am still LMAO - I do wishe someone had a camera so you could see how fast I threw that box lid, jumped back and started screaming!

Hi Susan! It was so much fun - and the whole family really enjoyed it. Syd bit into her steak and was singing! lol We were surprised she enjoyed everything so much! She said she can't wait to do it again and we do plan to. Next time, I won't be photographing everything so it should be easier for me too:) lol Now I'm not a rookie!

It would make a great gift - I asked my sister's advice and she says the person I intend to send one to (who does follow my hub articles so I don't wanna give it away:) she said she would LOVE to receive one! I do plan to send one to her and my nephew too as soon as I can find a good occasion. I know Erin and Chase would have a blast preparing this one, huh!

Thanks and I hope you do this sometime - it was really an awesome night for us all!

Hey Mhatter99 - thank you! I wasn't going to write about it at all until I had my little live mishap:) hahaha Then the humor of it all was killing me! So I decided to grab my camera and take a few shots as we cooked. I was not going to do the hub if the food didn't raise the bar. It DID though - it was simple to follow the instructions and all was perfect! I was even able to time it so everything came out hot - together.

Thanks for sharing the evening with us - I tell you - it was a hoot!!

Hey rcrumple - this was so much fun! Now the surprise was on me but that was one of the best parts this year! hahaha I was so stumped. I just didn't know what in the world to do with them for 5 more hours! hahaha Once I read the instructions, I realized it was all good and could stay all tightly wrapped until Dave got home. ha!

Now you can order crab and crab legs from Lobster Gram - I think at one point I ordered a package with them in it. It was all so tantalizing I couldn't decide! lol I suppose that is how I ended up with my mix up. The lobster bisque soup and all the laughs were worth it!

Thank you so much Ruchira! We had a blast...we went to Ameristar and Dave rented a huge hotel room last night for our anniversary. I think the Lobster Gram night was more fun! We enjoyed the nice hospitality and a little gambling but it seemed a little slow:) haha The view of the slow moving river this morning was so nice....I just wish hotels had better coffee!

RealHousewife profile image

RealHousewife 4 years ago from St. Louis, MO Author

Hi KT! Oh my....this certainly was one anniversary I will never forget! hahaha I know it seems silly because I am so much bigger than those lobsters but I was freaked! I guess not expecting it...and then after I closed it back up really tight - I kept hearing them scratching in there!!! That is super creepy!

When I called my husband - he could hear the alarm in my voice so I think when I first started to explain so when he realized my whole thing was these live lobsters I wasn't expecting he was laughing so hard! I guess partly relieved like "is that all?" hahaha

Thanks so much and I hope you get a chance to enjoy a nice meal like this with some nice surprises! hahaha

RealHousewife profile image

RealHousewife 4 years ago from St. Louis, MO Author

Oh Frog - that was hilarious! I knew I COULD order Live Lobsters but I didn't plan on this. I changed it so many times, I guess I focused on the side dishes more than the "live" versus "frozen" part. hahaha Then I didn't know what to do with the creatures....I wanted to call my mom but she is in Italy! I didn't think she'd appreciate a call at like 3 a.m. her time to say "how do I keep lobsters alive for 5 hours?" hahaha

Well if you had been here - I would have served you a nice hot steamy plate of (no not frog legs) Lobster! hahaha

OMG! You've given me such a fright, I can now FEEL those monstrosities running up my legs in an effort to escape their unfortunate lot. Oh, gosh, alive and wiggly in a box! I would die there and then in my shoes!

Down here we have a joke -

A tourist asked a fisherman busy boiling live lobsters in a pot, "Now listen to all those lobsters screaming! Are you sure they don't feel pain?"

Fisherman: "Nei, Master, they don't feel nothing. They're used to be boiled like that."

I've eaten lobster only once. (It was already dead and frozen and I've decided not to watch the cooking procedure.) It was served on a bed of lettuce with a delicious sauce. Now that was indeed the most delicious (and tender) sea animal I have ever eaten. And I will eat it again as long as I don't hear them scream and as long as I don't have to see and touch their monstrous bodies.

Thanks for sharing your happy anniversary with us, RealHouswife! I could picture the fun you've had.

Hi Martie! Oh yeah - I was shocked! Lol. I just stood there having one of those moments where your brain fills up with crazy thoughts but you can't act. Like I just couldn't figure out what to do with them! I kept looking at the clock...I wondered if they knew how to play a few rounds of poker? Lol

I think Lobster is the most delicate and delicious sea food! It's so light and I love the butter:) mmmm!

This was for sure a really surprising anniversary! Hahahaha
