Top Wedding Trends 2014

The emerging 2014 wedding trends can most easily be summed up by the word romantic. Of course, this word brings different images to mind for everyone, so let’s examine some of the features that are giving this year’s wedding a distinctive aura of romance.

From décor to fashion, couples are looking back to an earlier time for inspiration. One of the most inspiring decades this year seems to be the 1920s. Gatsby-inspired trends invoke Hollywood glamour, but in a softer pearls & lace sort of style. This style can be manifested in almost every aspect of the day, including the china, invitations, clothing, centerpieces, and the tablecloths and chair covers.

Hand-in-hand with the vintage trend comes a return of formality. In a reversal of the laidback, rustic style that has been popular over the last few years, many couples are seizing the opportunity to host a classy and formal event. This means the return of white-gloved attired waiters, ornate floral displays (more about that later), beautifully patterned fabrics, classic live bands, chandeliers, and crystal.

Although we’ll see weddings in all hues, a growing preference this year will be a soft, somewhat neutral pallet, possibly accented with bold color pops. Shades such as blush pink, nude, mink, orchid, mauve, or peach lay a warm foundation, and can be accented with bold colors such as dark purples or citrus shades, for example, or simply enhanced by varied textures, sparkles, accessories and flowers. There are lots of opportunities to add the dramatic color pop, such as the cake, table linens, centerpieces, jewelry, vases, or dishes.

Think big, soft, and organic for 2014 wedding flowers. The romantic, vintage thread is continued by flowered garlands, overflowing table arrangements, and large, dramatic flowers. Highly textured flowers such as peonies, chrysanthemums, and roses create lovely, natural looking arrangements that are breaking away from the highly manicured and structured arrangements previously in favor.

Glamorous Touches

The drama is in the details in this season of subtle sensation. Accents like feathers, beads, pearls, lace, flowers, crystal, and yes, even the well-placed sequin, create the air of a sophisticated 1920s dinner party. Even as the popularity of the rustic-style weddings continues, couples are adding a few more touches of sparkle and sophistication. Large gold or silver candle holders and vases, elegant cake stands and champagne glasses, flower arrangements and hairstyles accented with beads or feathers, and chandeliers are just a few examples of little additions that have a big impact.

Cell Phones at Weddings - Yes or No?

  • Absolutely! All the pics, messages and tweets from friends and family are great.
  • Neutral - I don't have a preference either way.
  • Absolutely Not! Cell phones are a distraction and shouldn't be allowed.

Words & Letters

Classic monograms are back and are showing up all over 2014 weddings, from stationary to lighted marquees. Whether on paper, in lights, or on hand-painted signs, the bride and groom’s new initials can be incorporated into the decorative scheme. Besides monograms, meaningful words such as “love,” “always” or “forever” can take a prominent place as part of a marquee or on table arrangements.

Family Style Food

The trend of formality may not have entirely carried into wedding menu preferences, as more couples will choose family style dining as opposed to served or buffet style dinners. This choice may allow the hosts to offer more options, and gives guests with ever more diverse dietary preferences more control over what they eat.

Textured Cake

In a departure from the sleek and smooth fondant ubiquitous in the first decade of the 21st century, texture is the new must-have feature for wedding cakes. Whether cascading ruffles or vintage floral accents, cakes are also getting made over to fit the mood of romantic elegance. The cake, cake stand, and cake display accents also provide another place for the glamorous details mentioned earlier to be displayed.

Styles Beyond Strapless

Cap sleeves, lace sleeves, flower-enhanced single straps, and flapper-style thin straps with deep v backs are emerging as alternatives to the strapless styles that dominated bridal fashion for decades. Lace, jeweled accents, beads, and slim silhouettes can also be found on this year’s most loved bridal gowns. Once again, these options fit perfectly with the elegance, formality, and romance so prominently featured in other aspects of current wedding style.

Phone Protocol

Couples seem to be choosing to go one way or the other when it comes to their technology preferences, and this year, they’re not afraid to let their guests know. Some couples create a custom hashtag and invite their guests to live tweet comments and pictures from their wedding to create an instantaneous electronic scrapbook. To encourage guests to be actively documenting the day on social media, some couples even provide decorated charging stations. On the other hand, some weddings are decidedly phone-free, with signs and notes requesting electronic devices not be used. Some couples are even requesting that phones be dropped off at a designated station to remove the temptation for guests to post unauthorized pictures or videos.

It looks like 2014 holds countless elegant wedding possibilities. If you are planning a wedding and hope to incorporate some of these romantic, vintage ideas, the cost can add up quickly. To make sure you can create the look you want on your budget, consider rental options for everything from tables and chairs to centerpieces, linens, décor, dinner ware, and more. You will likely find yourself able to afford so much more when you rent from a wedding rental company, who make it their business to stay on the cutting edge of wedding trends.
