   I feel if you ask someone to promise you something , you subconsciously believe they won't do it.  A trust issue, if you trust them to do whatever then you shouldn't have to have them promise.  So yes promises are usually broken.

   it is because nobody's perfect. and by that no one can guarantee you to fully rely on what they promised because they might fail.

   Because we truly never know what will be from one moment to the next.  We may have good intentions to follow through but life happens. Live in each moment fully and cherish it. Promises can be the seed for a lie.

   When people make promises, they do it knowing that it only can be kept within their power. Unfortunately many promises are broken by circumstances beyond our power.

   Essence of life is not something that should and must, so all is depending on the situation. so we can not keep their promises because there are things that we do not want but we can not reject it at the time.

   Breaking a promise (or being the bearer of a broken promise) is often times an unfortunate aspect of life; whether unintentionally or intentionally broken is then the question. I can say not much can be done about breaking a promise because something else came up. The intentional breaking of a promise though? That's a whole different ball game.

    Because the only thing constant in the universe is change itself. People change, they grow in opposite directions. Also some simply over promise and are not able to hold up to their end of the bargain.
    
    Sometimes promises are made to quiet another persons nagging and complaining and they never intended on living up to the promise in the first place.
    
    Bottom line tho - "Because the only thing constant in the universe is change itself. "

    Ya, I agree with most of the answers here. But what I think is that we can not trust people. Humans are not trustworthy. It's very difficult to put our trust in people. I've heard people often say that we must trust others or some one in whom we can put our trust. But that is not true practically. I have written even a hub on this "Trust".
