Great question! When I was in college I always asked, "Why do you ask?" Most of the time, people would say, "Just curious..." I'd say, "Oh..." and not answer. What bothers me are the questions that have a negative subtext... For example, when I began teaching at a community college, my sister-in-law asked, "How did you get that job?" I was so annoyed, I said, "What is that supposed to mean? You don't think I'm qualified? You don't think I know how to interview for a job? Do you think you have to know someone to get a decent job?" There is a subtext to some questions that is so incredibly insulting. I think we should create a word to say when such questions are asked... any ideas?
