   I have a relative who has treated her mother in law very badly but whenever she meets me she keeps l
   
   I have a relative who has treated her mother in law very badly  but whenever she meets me she keeps lying to me about her relation with her mother in law. I do not want to be very rude ( though I wish I could be ) but how can I convey this message to her that I know that she is lying.

   What I do, is say something like;  "Why do you always feel you have to justify yourself to me?"  She will become upset and babble for a few minutes, denying, acting as if she doesn't understand, and if you stick around she say things that obviously come from the real place...she knows what she is doing which is why she thinks if she repeats something enough times it becomes true.

   This is definitely tough, but maybe you could take a back door approach and see how that goes. Instead of coming out and saying, "I know you're lying about how awesome things are with your mother-in-law," maybe you could do the following: the next time you're together and the subject of her mother-in-law comes up, tell her how you're so impressed that the two of them have such a good relationship. You may even mention the irony that their relationship sounds so perfect, when every one else has horror stories about their mothers-in-law. From there, see if you can get her to tell you the real story because what she's been telling you sounds too good to be true.
