I would think more than 1 year would be too long. If someone has asked you to make that big of commitment, Then when you except, It's telling one another you are willing to spend the rest of your lives together. It seems to me if it's more than a year, One or the other is uncertain.
A year is long enough, unless there are some circumstances that are truly beyond their control. I heard an older guy (58) giving a younger guy (25) a suggestion. The younger fellow has been with his girlfriend (living with) for 3 years and she was pressuring him for a commitment. The older guy suggested that he purchase her an engagement ring and that would buy him at least another year to three without actually taking the step to marry her.

What's the rush? If this is your first marriage enjoy dating, enjoy the engagement and don't rush into anything. If you're lucky you'll have the rest of your lives together. Why speed this part along?
For those on their second marriage I think it would make sense to not have a long engagement. There are usually kids involved and there are more reasons to get married quickly.
I've heard of many couples who were engaged longer than 5 years up to 10. They are comfortable where they are in the relationship and there is no rush for them to move onto the next step. Unless there are benefits such as health benefits there is no reason for them to get married, and then if something happens where they decide to break up there is no added hassle.
Also weddings are expensive.
My mother has always told me that I should be engaged for three years before getting married. I don't know if I'll wait that long but it's something to think about. I know I'll want to take my time with an engagement. I'm not in any rush to get married and I know I'll want a lot of time planning a wedding to make sure everything is right. (I'm also someone who thinks it's silly to plan a wedding before I'm engaged.)
First off I'm not engaged it was a general question as most of mine are. If u ask a person to marry u and take more than a year or two to actually marry that person that is an issue to me. Circumstances may vary, but a delay shows uncertainty
Considering that nearly 50% of marriages end in divorce what's another year or two of an engagement to make sure that the relationship is working. I know more than a few people that have broken up after a long engagement.
Then why get engaged if u don't plant on marrying soon? Just continue the committed relationship as is
