What is the single most important ingredient for a happy marriage?

If you could choose only one word to describe to a newlywed couple what is necessary for a happy marriage, what would it be?

    I would suggest this: "Communication"

How can you have a happy life with someone if you don't know how to communicate?

"TRUST!" Without Trust, You have nothing. Your relationship will start to crumble down around you.

I believe it to be respect. Respecting each other is the foundation for everything else in a marriage.

That the two of you are right for each other, that you two prefer to be married to each other, then to be married to other people or to be single.

Open and honest communication would seem to be the mother of all ingredients in the marriage recipe. If you are unable to communicate freely and honestly with each other (agree to disagree), your marriage will likely diminish. If your spouse tends to dominate most conversations, or if they rarely give credence to anything you have to say, the marriage will not be a happy one.

The old rule was always "agree to disagree" and it followed that each partner could say what they felt and work their way through any issues. So,

Appreciation.        You asked for ONE word, which makes it a bit difficult......but after I focused on the question and mulled this over, this is my one word.
Everyone has given a strong answer and I agree.  We could go on and on, but for me, although I embrace many reasons as being quite important, it just keeps coming back to "Appreciation."

I would say (naturally agreeing) with each other on the important things. People who tend to (naturally agree) on most issues have less arguments and stay together. It's important to have the same goals and shared values regarding marriage. Ultimately we are all looking for someone who wants we want.
"There is no amount of (communication) or (work) that can overcome being with someone who does not want what you want."

Has to be equal compromise. No marriage will survive unless each partner takes the views of the other into account. Was a skill it took me a while to learn but it had to be done.

I would say that communication builds trust and respect which are essential in building a good relationship.  Love pulls it all together.

Commitment to withstand bad days and cherish good days, sunny days always change to rainy days, just like it is with everything, as we can not be happy all the time...you would not appreciate sun without rain, you would not appreciate happiness without sad days....just keep an umbrella in your corner, for rainy days, big enough to cover both of you....

Reciprocity. If you aren't willing to return favors, compliments, and actions, then the relationship will tire very quickly.

I agree that respect is the most important.

    I would say kindness.
One article said that there were only two points for a happy marriage--be a good person and find a good person.
If you think that's too wide, the second word in my mind would be "cherish". Cherish what you are having, you'll naturally know how to do that.

Allow the marriage to fulfill your desire for happiness

I say trust since this includes respect. You can't really trust someone you don't respect or if they don't respect you.
