I've never thought of it as a matter of acquisition. You love, and those you love are your loved ones. They do not necessarily belong to you in any sense.
Whether or not they love you back is not the point. I would suggest that more often than not they don't.
You frequently do not know that another loves you. Sometimes you believe you are loved only rudely to discover otherwise. When those who love you continue to, and to show you they do, when you feel you deserve it and also when you don't, then you can be sure they do. It takes time.
