What can you do when you are older than you want to be?

    I don't have a "do-over" button

About the only thing I can think of is to "think young."  Stay just as active as you possibly can, even though your body might rebel a little the next day.
When we make up our minds that we are getting old it is all downhill from there.

You can use autosuggestion to turn your age back 10 years. You have to keep repeating that age, then the subsconscious will bring it to pass or you can stop your age where it is.  A lot of aging is suggestion. The spirit does not calculate age. Time is man made.

AMEN to that!  What is age really?  If one did not know one's age, how would he/she act and/or perceive himself/herself to be?

Be thankful that you're still here. Accept that everything in life changes. Don't let numbers rule what you do.

That is so true. Either we become old or die young.  Which one would YOU choose to do?

Age is just a number, no more no less.  Besides what and who defines old?  Is it outside indices such as society, family, peers or is it YOU.   Old is an attitude.  Old is when one is no longer interested in evolving in the life process.  Old is when one is no longer interested in becoming the best possible person he/she CAN be.  Life is always full of possibilities and change.   One must always anticipate and being proactive regarding change in order to grow and remain a vital human being.

When one ceases and does not want to change, one becomes old. Never permit yourself to be static in your opinions and approach to life.  To be static is to become old and welcome the kiss of death.  Remember, there is the old mindset.  The old mindset is totally against growth, change, and progress.  There are people in their late teens and 20s who have an old mindset.  They are set in their ways, believing that it is the right way and do not intend to change it for the world.

Then there is the young or youthful mindset.  Such people, regardless of age, are forever curious about life.  They are always learning and feel that they do not know everything.  They do not subscribe to what societal and outside expectations.  They live life by their own rules.  They do not let age preclude them from enjoying themselves.  They refuse to succumb to societal notions as to how a person of "their age" should act!

I have to agree with Old Poolman -- think young!

But also know that you are not that Homo sapiens shell you wear. So, it wears out. You get a new one, unless you awaken fully as a spiritual being, then you no longer need one.

A lot of health comes from attitude. Part of it comes from good eating habits and from exercise.

I've used my "do-over" button so many times, it's become habit. But after thousands of years, it gets a bit old waking up in diapers to start all over again.

Well, I accept my age because there isn't a damn thing I can do to change it. I don't spend time trying regain time that is already behind me. I try to make the best of the time I have left. I live in the now. I don't want to have things that I may enjoy now, fly by me because I'm too busy looking for things I enjoyed 10 years ago. I can't live in the future because I don't know what that is. So, I live for today. I stay in the moment and find it very rewarding. As my age changes, so do the things around me, my interests, my relationships. And by not resisting those changes, I get to enjoy them all. Very seldom do I say, " I wish I would have...". Instead, I do. I get to enjoy the present as well as the fond memories of the past. Can't ask for much more than that.
Aging can be stressful. Or, it can be an adventure. I choose that the journey is the destination.

I have found taking up new challenges has reduced the impact that age has brought to my body.
I may not be able to climb tree's anymore but I can paint them, painting is something I have taken up in the last 5 years, I may not be able to dance like a demon but I have taken up playing the guitar.
I personally am having a good time in my later years, free from the stresses ad strains of youthful exuberance. Mind you I do have a young wife and that can be stressful sometimes!

This comment is directed to all 9 of you that tried to answer my question - thank you - some great advice from all of you.  But, I just don't want to be 80, which will occur one month from tomorrow.  What is so great about "young?"

I don't look at life that as old because age is just a number I have seen 90 year old individual active and still working their hardest and in good health condition how you feel is the best not what you think young is just about figuring life out

What's great about being young is that you try to do the right things and be active at 80. Turn your attention to 90 instead of 18. 90 is possible for you. 18 is not. Move on and enjoy.

I tried to comment on all of the answers you good folks provided, but the comment section only allows so many characters, and it wasn't enough, so here are some more characters.

I just don't want to be 80!   I know the alternative, but I still don't want to be 80!

Thinking young?  What's so great about young?  Thinking middle age seems better.  Some would say, "Act your age."  Well, I've never been this age before, so I don't know how to do that.

I'm not molting away with a shawl over my shoulders, watching daytime TV.  A week ago Sunday we performed the ending show of a stage play I was in.  I portrayed Otis Pinduster, High Sheriff of Salem Farms.  A couple months ago I published my first novel,  "My Summer of 1947."  It's available on Amazon Kindle E-books go read it, it's a pretty good story.  I'm well into my third novel, a western fable/farce.  I'm under consideration for being a guest columnist with our local newspaper.  I founded (but has since failed) The Participate Movement. It was designed to help people "participate" in Government by knowing who their representatives are, and how to correspond with them.  After all we are supposed to be "a Government of the people, by the people."  Apathy has killed it, many were eager to join, but few wanted to participate. Pity!  I participate.

We have 5 adult children, 15 grand children, 7 great grand children, and a dog named Toby.  Most live near-by.  This fact in and of itself will keep one busy.  In September I walked my great granddaughter to school on her first day of kindergarten.

My collapsed lumbar discs have limited my physical activities - I can't play golf anymore DAMN.  My diabetes won't allow many sweets anymore DAMN.

Having said all that - I just don't wnat to be 80!!!!!!!!!!!

RBJ33- I'm not sure what you expect of life at age 80, but it may be a little much. You do more now than I ever did. I'm not preaching but extensively, study the word "gratitude". Don't miss this age while searching for one that is gone.
