How soon should you be married after an announcement of an engagement?
Some couples wait years after an engagement to be married and in some cases it never happens should you wait more than a year to be married after the announcement of the engagement?
In south India, its about 2 months. Nobody wait more than 6 months. According to me it is less than 6 months but in some cases it is less than 2.
I think the main bit of waiting should be with selecting the right mate for oneself. Ideally there should not be a marriage proposal until the couple is ready to get married. To do otherwise is nothing more than giving a "promise". It's a way to pacify their mate. It's like taking a cruise without a destination. The excitement wears off when they finally realize the ship isn't going to dock.
If someone is not ready to get married they should not propose. The typical engagement lasts about year in the U.S. On average it takes about that long to plan most weddings that have all the pomp and circumstance. Having said that there are no "rules".
