   If they look like they smile easliy. When glancing over at someone, if they turn away from you right away or have an expression as if they look annoyed that you glanced at them then, to me, they seem unapproachable. I

   I am with Bk42Author, if a person easily smiles, listens to you, and never talks down to you, then approach them, but with respect.

   There truly are particular types of behavior, body language & "Welcome Flags," that most people can easily pick up on.  Depending on the environment and situation at the moment, we find we are  in a room full of strangers.....I know that I may automatically "look around" a bit and scan the crowd without staring. 
   If I appear relaxed and smile, invariably someone also looking for a friendly, relaxed person, will approach me or welcome my approach.  I feel it's much like a silent mutual invitation to interact.  Similar personalities seem to find one another and can more or less read the signs and feel the vibes.
   I believe that often it is so obvious, it's like wearing a sign. 
   Certainly the opposite would hold true as well.  Introverted/shy people or someone who avoids eye contact, does not smile or seem comfortable, would not be an easy person to approach
   I see your question as going hand in hand with "First Impressions."  (keeping in mind that 1st impressions are accurate about 90% of the time).......Great Question, midget.

   You can tell by body language, by eye contact, observing them with others, facial expression, appropriate attire, and a gut feeling about them. If a person just looks at you or vice versa, a feeling of connection will reveal the answer, especially smiles and sparkle in eyes.

   1. Concsiousness: They may or may not smile, but the face will carry its own poise, convey its own beauty, charisma and poise. They seem ready to listen and without the seemingly insecure taint of so many of us.
   
   2. There is the very 'worldly' who with their strong sense of ego and false confidence, can also appear to be unafraid, charming and attractive, some purposefully to lure us in.
   
   Ultimately, both are aspects of Consciousness, even if moving from a lesser to a greater Light.
