Would you feel compelled to say "yes" to a public marriage proposal? Why? or Why not?
No, but this would never happen to me. No man who knew me well enough to propose would ever make it a public spectacle.
Lisa, I'm with you! I would hope the same thing too. Don't even put me in that position.
No, I would not if I didn't want to get married.
Even if it was a grand gesture, if you're not feeling it, you just don't feel it.
Maybe he thinks that you will say no if it was a more private setting and this is his attempt of not getting rejected by you.
Why say yes when you're going to break the guy's heart later on.
Yes it will be embarrassing if you said no to him, but why give him false hopes and lie to yourself about what you want.
Don't get lost in the moment!
Davlyn, your last statement just says it all....Fear of his embarrassment should not be reason to go along with something unwanted.
No, if the person I was with didn't respect my social anxiety enough to understand how traumatizing that would be, I would have no trouble traumatizing HIM with a rejection.
Love your guts, Michaela!!! Sometimes, I'm too overly concerned about not hurting others feelings so although I would definitely feel uncomfortable and want to say no; I just wonder if I really would.
If you were actually "in love" with the guy and had been hoping he would propose to you odds are you're not going to reject him when he finally does. The last thing on your mind will be "social anxiety". Now if you're NOT "in love" you'd say no.
No. I would only yes to someone that I really wanted to be married to.
Being a man I think marriage proposals are far more romantic and special when they are done in private. A guy who proposes to a woman in public is oftentimes unsure about what she may say and he hopes that by making a grand gesture in front of family/friends or a public stadium she will be "shamed" into saying "yes".
Truth be told most marriage proposals aren't a real "surprise".
Couples that have been living together or in long-term relationships generally have "discussed getting married" or have children.
In other words (the guy already knows) she is going to say yes!
In fact these days there is seldom any kneeling down on one knee and presenting a ring. The guy may wake up one morning next to the woman or while snuggling in front of a fireplace and say; "I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Lets get married." The couple goes shopping together to pick out the ring, the "save the date" notices, and it snowballs from there. Rarely is a marriage proposal the equivalent of buying a lottery ticket or praying that she'll say "yes".
There is a whole industry out there selling books and ideas to women on how to get their man to propose including the engagement chicken recipe. Odds are if the woman has either "hinted" at getting married or given an ultimatum she'll say "yes" to a proposal anyway it comes!
