The Meaning of Friendship
The great Roman Statesman Cicero once remarked that friendship increases happiness and diminishes misery by doubling of our joy and dividing of our grief. What he meant is that a true friend is so delighted in our success and happiness that he receives as much pleasure from it as we do ourselves.
In the absence of a friend the world would be gloomy. It is of no use to attain wealth, power or honour, if you are devoid of a real friend. For it is he and his approval which doubles the pleasure. Joys become more intense and permanent by sharing more with a friend, Friendship is an elixir which is essential for healthy and happy life.
It is also true that friendship diminishes our misery and troubles when a friend shares the burden of it. Our grief is alleviated by friendly condolence. At the time of adversity the advice and active assistance provided by a friend works like a medicine.
Where a friendless man stands alone, exposed, unprotected by blows of fortune, a friendship provides a strong shield against such miseries. A friendship is without caste, creed, religion, class or status. It is a feeling of love, sharing and caring which denotes friendship. It is a shoulder on which one can rest upon when burdened with sorrow.
Friendship is like an ever flowing fountain, coming up from the bottom of the earth. It is an outgoing concern, much beyond the selfish motives.
