The Value of Friendship
In my humble opinion...
It seems the value of the word "friend" has irreversibly changed in today's world. Living in a time when social networking too often takes the place of actual face-to-face relationships, it appears the meaning of a friend has been devalued beyond repair.
Many of us call people we have never meant face to face "friends". We have never looked into that persons eyes to see the true character there. Never been there to comfort each other with an encouraging hug or pat on the back. Never known each others families, witnessed their day to day lives, drama and joy. Does the lack of human contact detract from the value of true friendship?
A large number of people in today's world appear to be on a perpetual mission to see who can collect the most friends in a profile on a plethora of social network platforms. I often wonder just how many of those friends can one call in the middle of the night when a true friend is needed and if that friend would indeed venture out at 3:00 AM, or put their lives on hold in order to help a "friend" in need? Does a large portfolio of virtual strangers masked as friends create a false sense of what true friendship is all about?
I believe it's important to reflect on the true meaning of friendship and occasionally take inventory of who really would be there for me at 3AM.
I believe a true friend isn't afraid to disagree with you and when they do, also aren't in fear of compromising an element in the friendship in order to help their friend. At the same time a true friend doesn't judge when you "screw up" and supports you even in the tangled odds of disagreement.
True friends should be able to separate, follow different paths in life and be able to pick up the threads of their friendship right where they left off. Even it's been years or for some, decades later.
Most of all I believe that a true friend should have a tangible human element that I can feel. Eye contact that conveys more than written words ever will. A comforting hug, encouraging hand on my back or a tug of my hand to pull one another along. Even a voice on the phone communicating emotions that evoke a plethora reactions to make that human connection.

Charlotte's Web - A Story of True Friendship
Charlotte's Web is one of the first books I recall reading that had a memorable, lasting emotional effect on me. It's such a sweet story that defines and reflects the true meaning friendship. Still to this day able to bring tears to my eyes, the passage below is my favorite passage in this classic story:
You have been my friend. That in itself is a tremendous thing. I wove my webs for you because I liked you. After all, what's a life, anyway? We're born, we live a little while, we die. A spider's life can't help being something of a mess, with all this trapping and eating flies. By helping you, perhaps I was trying to lift up my life a trifle. Heaven knows anyone's life can stand a little of that.
Charlotte, "Charlotte's Web"
