When It’s Better To Be Alone

Someone once told me, "it’s better to be alone than to wish you were." As a person who is divorced, I can certainly appreciate this sentiment. Many people have a great fear of not being in a romantic relationship, and certainly around the holidays. But if the relationship you are in is rocky, your general heath may be improved if you are alone.

Modern day marriages are vastly different from the Victorian England days, when people got married and stayed married for better or worse. Today’s marriages are more like the Roman ideology, where either spouse could simply, ‘opt out’ if things were not working out for them. Staying together just for the children, may not be a good thing, if you’re fighting everyday. Of course some relationships are worth saving. Research shows that lack of communication is one of leading causes of divorce. When couples marry, they should discuss their expectations prior to the marriage. This might be like an emotional prenuptial agreement.

In many cases, the problem that has caused divorce has existed in the couple’s relationship long before they got married. These problems were either not acknowledged or ignored in the hope that marriage would somehow change things. Sometimes couples also have children for this same reason. Firstly, you can’t change anybody. It’s kind of like, what you see is what you get.

Financial issues is another deal breaker for relationships. Lack of communication about financial issues is most of the problem. If you are considering getting married, have an open conversation about money. It’s not about what he or she has, it’s about being on the same page about expectations and the future.

Marital infidelity is also the cause of many divorces. Again, discussion of this subject before you take the plunge is advisable. Some couples’ relationship seem to thrive with the open marriage arrangement. A marriage can be whatever you want it to be, it only has to be agreed upon by both parties.

If you don’t think the relationship is not worth the effort and you would rather be alone, then you're really not alone. Here are some quotes on the subject of being alone.

George Washington

You cannot be lonely if you like the person you're alone with.

Wayne Dyer

It's better to be unhappy alone than unhappy with someone - so far.
