~ Psalm 17 ~ Spiritual Journey From the Beginning To The End Of The Psalm ~

The Psalms are an exceptionally brilliant collection of godly wisdom! How splendidly marvelous they are, so wonderfully exuding a magnificently rich fragrant spiritual bouquet of wisdom that awakens the soul! Here the psalmist David makes a fervent, earnest plea and supplication to the Lord! He so yearns Divine Intervention!

This Psalm was written while David was once again being persecuted by Saul! It has been supposed that David was possibly in the wilderness of Moan. David is on one side of the mountain and Saul is on the other along with his men who were pursuing him with a vengeance! However his intentions were interrupted when a messenger brought Saul a notice that the Philistines were about to raid the land therefore he called his men back…

Saul’s son Jonathan genuinely loved David like a brother and they vowed an entered into a covenant with one another. They encouraged one another in their belief, trust and Faith in the Lord! Jonathan pledged his devoted loyalty to David! He sincerely looked forward to the day that David would actually rise to the throne and become King of Israel instead of his own father, King Saul! Who was the first King appointed by God. Jonathan and David mutually shared one of the deepest contiguously superb, brilliantly wonderful, relationships ever recorded in the Bible!

What is so very interesting is that his father, King Saul had become spiritually blinded and believed that his pursuit of David was justified. He had become impetuous, self centered and obsessively jealous of David’s achievements. He erroneously thought that the Lord was still with him, although the Prophet Samuel had told him otherwise! He was so greatly mistaken, and even went so far as to kill his own priests. Saul had become mentally and emotionally unstable!

Here we can learn a grand life lesson! It is important that we always check with the Lord first and make sure what we are doing or seeking is in His WILL... Thank God for Jesus Christ and His Holy Spirit that abides within us upon the profession of our Faith in HIM! He is the promised internal Comforter, Guide and Teacher! We must constantly pray amd seek His direction, keeping in mind that the Lord never tempts anyone! Nor does He condone anything that goes against His principles! Therefore we should always check our motives and agenda and make sure that we are not operating in self and what we are doing is of the Lord! Our purpose in life is to serve God not our own egos!

Saul’s jealousy, impulsiveness and insecurity began allowing his weaknesses to get the best of him. I mentioned before that he had stopped listening to the Prophet Samuel who was his anointed spiritual advisor! He disobeyed God! Despite Saul’s persecutions against David and seeking to kill him David still respected him! He even referred to Saul as “my lord the king” in I Samuel 24! Here we see that he humbly bowed and prostrated himself which was a customary display of respect. Still Saul persisted to rebel and sin against God voraciously pursuing David. Samuel had already boldly told King Saul: …For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the WORD of THE LORD, He has rejected you as king.” I Samuel 15.

There will be times when you are walking with the Lord that you will be misunderstood, mistreated, alienated, persecuted and your integrity questioned. Rest assured that the Lord knows! We must continually seek the Lord’s face and be strong yet humble and draw even closer to HIM!

Rebellion against God is serious and comes with consequences. Much of what is going on in our world today is because God’s principles for life and living are continually ignored! We must daily seek the face of the Lord! Yes! God truly is a forgiving God and His mercy endures forever! He knows what has happened, what is happening and what will happen… We serve an Omnipresent, Sovereign God who will NEVER lead us astray! He knows the measure of our faith and our character!

The anointing of the Lord will prepare us for His service! It sets us apart for Him! It is only through The LORD that “ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE!” Matthew 19.

We must ALWAYS Keep in mind that God is our Highest Authority!

Book of Praise Lesson Highlights

BOOK 1

“A Psalm of David” A Prayer of David

Theme: A plea for justice in the face of false accusations and persecution. David urges us to realize the TRUE goal of life – TO KNOW GOD – and the TRUE reward of life – to see GOD one day

Author: David

This Psalm is an awe-inspiring prayer! It is an earnest distressing plea where David acknowledges his shortcomings! He is brutally honest with the Lord and courageously states his sincerity! His pain is so great that he asks the Lord to intervene and defend him! He knows that the Lord is totally aware of what is going on! No doubt he has a close relationship with the Lord!

We too can be encouraged and know we can boldly, yet humbly and respectfully approach the Lord without fear! God is The Spirit of TRUTH! He knows the intentions of our hearts as well as our limitations! It is very important to be honest and transparent with HIM! David’s righteous appeal was an expressed reflection that he is repentant and his lips are clean. “Hear, O LORD, my righteous plea; listen to my cry. Give ear to my prayer it does not rise from deceitful lips. May my vindication come from You; May Your eyes see what is right.”

David is not saying he has never sinned. His sin with Bathsheba is often brought to mind, when he was at a weak moment he succumbed to his flesh… No doubt God forgave him! His confidence is in the fact that he diligently seeks the Lord and spends time with Him! He readily repents and practices not speaking impulsively but instead disciplines himself by bridling his tongue. “Though You probe my heart and examine me at night, though You test me, You will find nothing; I have resolved that my mouth will not sin.”

David at this time is walking closely on the straight and narrow path! "My steps have held to your paths; my feet have not slipped.”

The Lord is David’s anchor! He eagerly prays in expectation of an answer asking the Lord to hear His prayer! Here David exudes a confidence which is birthed out of walking closely with the Lord. He is certain the Lord hears His prayers. “I call upon You, O GOD, for You WILL answer me; give ear to me and hear my prayer.”

David has every reason to trust the Lord! He knows what it means to be loved by God! He has on many occasions been delivered out of extraordinary situations. He knows what it is like to have the “Favor!” of the LORD upon you! There is nothing greater than being in the Presence of the LORD! This is the same David who as a young lad slew the brutal, ferocious giant Goliath! With the help of the Lord he killed Goliath with a simple sling shot and a few stones! “Show the wonder of Your great LOVE, You who save by Your right hand those who take refuge in You from their foes.”

The Word teaches us that David: “was a man after God’s own heart!” There is no higher honor! We can always seek solace in the presence of The Almighty Omnipotent GOD! However, one must learn to relinquish any and everything and put Him first! Distance comes when we allow things and the cares of this world to come in between “Come close to God and He WILL come close to you!” James 4. The greatest lesson we can learn from David was that he grew to become devoted to righteousness! The “apple of the eye” is in reference to the pupil of the eye, the aperture located in the middle of the eye. It is where rays of light pass through! We so need the Light of the Lord in our lives daily! Most fowls keep their children safe by keeping them snuggled under their wings! We too can find safety in The Lord from the wicked! “KEEP me as the apple of Your eye; hide me in the shadow of Your wings from the wicked who assail me, from my mortal enemies who surround me.”

We can expect spiritual warfare when we truly seek to live for the Lord! It can come from those we least expect! Keep in mind that Jesus was betrayed by Judas who was one of His many disciples. Often others will at times plot, set traps and seek to get close to us to destroy and or undermine our good intentions. They are often intimidated by our relationship with the Lord therefore they cannot really figure us out… They embrace the ways of the world! Judas was the weak link that satan used to attempt to destroy Jesus! He sold Jesus out for thirty pieces of silver… He had lost sight of the fact that what Jesus Christ had to offer was priceless!

Ask the LORD to open your spiritual eyes! PRAY FOR DISCERNMENT! Never compromise God’s principles to be accepted by anyone! “If God be for you, who can be against you!” Romans 8. Remember, Jesus was rejected by the very ones who should have stood “UP!” for HIM! “O LORD, by your hand SAVE me from such men. From men of this world whose reward is in this life.”

Draw close to the Lord! Spend time with Him each day! He is able to bring you through the tests and trials of life! In Him you can REJOICE! Thank God for Jesus Christ, His Word and His Holy Spirit! He is the Ultimate Father who wants what is best for each of us! GOD CAN & WILL FILL THE VOID IN YOUR LIFE! Through Him we have Eternal Life! “You still the hunger of those You cherish; their sons have plenty, and they store up wealth for their children.”

This Psalm concludes saying: “And I – in righteousness I WILL SEE YOUR FACE; when I awake, I WILL be SATISFIED with SEEING YOUR LIKENESS.”

DeBorrah, What a beautful and insightful vision of God's presence with us in this Psalm. I have seen it in my own life. Life is a constant struggle. When we are close to God the devil works hard to pull us away. When we stray, God gently and lovingly draws us back into His fold. In each circumstance it is a struggle, but God is always close at hand to guide us. Blessings to you DeBorrah. Keep shining the light!

It always amazes me how David was so respectful to Saul even knowing that He would one day be ruling in his place. His faith that it was God who would make that happen is spoken through his behavior in not trying to get rid of Saul himself nor to take vengeance on Saul for his horrible treatment of David.

I also like in David's prayer how he does acknowledge his own imperfections but understands that God is with Him still.

I am encouraged by your closing paragraph to draw near.

Great commentary and insight on this Psalm.

“I call upon You, O GOD, for You WILL answer me; give ear to me and hear my prayer.” The Lord is David’s anchor! He eagerly prays in expectation of an answer asking the Lord to hear His prayer! Here David exudes a confidence which is birthed out of walking closely with the Lord. He is certain the Lord hears His prayers. AMEN! AMEN! AMEN!

As someone said, experience is the best teacher. Those who have tried the faithfulness of God in times of trouble and hardship know that He answers prayer according to His divine will and purpose and love for His children. Our souls long for a Word from the Lord.

“The “apple of the eye” is in reference to the pupil of the eye, the aperture located in the middle of the eye. It is where rays of light pass through! We so need the Light of the Lord in our lives daily!” Living is a world saturated with evil and moving toward its own destruction, we need “the Light of the Lord in our lives” to reveal the true way.

I have a deep appreciation for this particular Psalm because it is the lament of David who is doing the best that he can, and senses that righteousness may not be sufficient. There is also the intriguing implication that the things that sometimes lay heavy on our hearts, arrogant enemies, in God, may, when all is said and done, be as ephemeral as a wisp of vapor.

Thank you, dear sister in Christ Jesus, for this beautiful and thought provoking synopsis of Psalm 17. You have successfully given this prayer of David a new freshness that is yet relevant to our own individual lives. The major issues of life and our relationship to our ever faithful and loving God are fundamental to authentic Christian living which you highlighted eloquently.

May God our Father, who by the power at work within you, be glory in His church and in Christ Jesus even until the end of time!

Forever His

Kristeen, AMEN! & THANK YOU! It is good to let others know that there is a cost for drawing closer to THE LORD! The spiritual warfare heightens as the devil tries to cleverly pull us in any way he can away from THE LORD using whomever or whatever he can... This is why we must daily seek THE LORD for strength! We must ask Him to empower us and open our spiritual eyes and ears through His precious HOLY SPIRIT! Our relatiohsip with HIM is truly priceless!

YES! Through "JESUS CHRIST we CAN DO ALL things!" There is nothing more important than continuously building an ongoing relationship with THE LORD! It is through HIM we can accomplish the things that He has created us for...

Tamarajo, It really is quite interesting! I believe that David was keenly aware of the spiritual warfare that was taking place. No doubt he had been anointed King it was just a matter of time! He knew he honored the Lord by honoring Saul in the meantime he was still being further prepared to take the throne of Israel!

There is much to learn in these marvelous Psalms! So glad that you have been encouraged! Thank You for sharing your insight! In HIS Love, Grace, Joy, Peace & Blessings! GOD BLESS YOU!

Hello

I'm sorry it's been a while. Hope you are well.

I enjoyed reading this and this bit you wrote reminded me of a pastor:

"There will be times when you are walking with the Lord that you will be misunderstood, mistreated, alienated, persecuted and your integrity questioned. Rest assured that the Lord knows!"

The Church was owing a lot of rent but many of the leaders in Church thought he had been spending the money and questioned his integrity. Every thing is sorted now. God will always come through.

Stay Blessed

Elena. :)

LadyE, It is well with my soul! GOD is GOOD! So glad that you enjoyed this! The Psalms have a plethora of wisdom that can help us through any situation! We can find encouragement in the time of need, when grieving or when one is misunderstood! We can find JOY even in time of sorrow...

It is unfortunate what happened with this pastor! However, sometimes it takes situations like this to see where others are…

We must truly learn to TRUST GOD and HIS WORD! We CAN stand on HIS WORD; “in ALL things God works for the GOOD n of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose…” Romans 8,

It is amazing. If we get away from His Word and counsel even for a little while, we too can start feeling like King Saul did. The jealousy, impulsiveness and insecurity you spoke of permeates the current culture. Disobedience to the Lord's will is everywhere. I like how you said the Lord knows our intentions and limitations. That is beautiful. It's so hard nowadays to admit we have limitations. People seem to want us to feel boundless in striving to do everything. The courage to step back and let the Lord do what you cannot do is hard to come by. Only by faith can we hand the steering wheel to Him and say "I can't go any further. I'm lost. You drive and show me the way!" Lord, open our eyes today and give us discernment and direction! Arise! Peace

A M Werner, God truly is FAITHFUL! HE IS MARVELOUS! He Loves us in spite of! He knows exactly where each of us are or are not! He really does Know our limitations and intentions! That in itself is AMAZING! This is why we ALL need Jesus Christ as our personal Savior! To KEEP us out of trouble! Or to walk us through this valley of the shadow of death… It can be hard to “step back!” But it is some times necessary! It is times like this we learn to better TRUST our infinite GOD! We must constantly seek HIS WILL for our lives! Move out of the way and ALLOW His precious Holy Spirit His Place in our lives! GOD truly is ABLE!

As you well stated: “Only by faith can we hand the steering wheel to Him and say "I can't go any further. I'm lost. You drive and show me the way!" Sinners do not normally draw close to God outside of trouble. When you get a man like David that only felt comfortable under the Lord's wings, it becomes an example to us for living. Most Jews use Moses as the example to live by but I see that David lived in God's shadow constantly but Moses went to Him like a wise neighbor for advise. Yes he was not scared of Him and sought to talk to Him face to face but he more often than not got angry and impatient and did not live in the constant flow of the Spirit that David did. I believe that apart from his poor understanding of marriage (multiple wives) he is the man to follow if a sinning man can be followed as an example.

Nobody, Interesting observations! Thank you for stopping by to share your commentary! I think that it is most interesting that The Word teaches us that David "Is a man after God's own heart" Acts 13. This was because He ruled his people according to The Word of God! Yet we are able to also see that it was his many pagan wives and concubines that continuously attempted to turn him away from the Lord! The life of David provides us with a plethora of life lessons & principles we can all learn from... The Psalms are truly marvelous & inspiring!

Again Thank you & GOD BLESS YOU! In HIS Love, Grace, Joy, Peace & Blessings!
