The 10 best books for life changing personal and spiritual empowerment

Updated on July 26, 2012

Food for the Soul

There are so many great books available today for self help personal/spiritual growth and empowerment. I started reading self-help personal growth books about 10 years ago, initially because I was searching for answers and help during some dark times in my life. Somewhere along the line during those 10 years, my reading and learning not only helped to create a transformation in my life, but also created a passion and desire to share some of the insights that I have learned and how these insights have impacted myself and others. I am convinced now that anyone who has a strong desire to make some positive changes in their lives, has been given a “call” from their higher self and ways will be opened for them. Perhaps this article is one of them.

Since I am a serious student of personal transformation and spiritual empowerment, much of my reading material has shifted from a modern self help genre to the teachings of many of the great sages and teachers throughout history in religion, metaphysics, mysticism, philosophy, and psychology. But there is no doubt that the initial sparks of inspiration and motivation came from our modern teachers in personal growth, spirituality, and manifestation.

So, here are the books that blazed my path to transformation and enlightenment. One of the reasons I liked all these books at the time of reading them is the readability and personal approach these book adopted. Clearly when getting into topics related to religion, philosophy or metaphysics the material in some of these books can get highly intellectual and lean toward those readers in the academic field. But these books, while full of very informative teachings, are both inspirational and fun to read. Easy access to the books is provided in the section below under Recommended Reading.

Wayne DyerPower of Intention – This is one the very first books I read on personal growth and it affected me profoundly. I went out and also bought the CD so I could listen in my car too. I have listened/read this book multiple times and each time I get something out of it. A inspiration staple in your library.

Eckhart Tolle - A New Earth Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose – Once I read this book, I felt I raised up to a new level of spiritual enlightenment. I experienced an amazing awakening while reading this book. I have implemented many of Eckhart’s ideas since reading this book, and I now consider myself a serious student of this great spiritual teacher. I have never seen someone that shares such powerful spiritual insight in such an egoless way.

Deepak Chopra – The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success: A Practical Guide to the Fulfillment of Your Dreams – What can you say about this major spiritual teacher, except “Thank You!” I have read almost all of Deepak’s books, (as I have with most of these other authors too), and I am never disappointed. The redundancy in any of them is important redundancy. This particular book is a great because of the overreaching spiritual guidance and inspiration. I also listen to this book on CD in my car, over and over (love his voice too!)

Byron Katie – Loving What Is: Four Questions That Can Change Your Life – During the reading of this book I had to face some tough issues about myself. Ms. Katie presents a very unique and probing method to face some of our toughest issues. It was a major eye opener for me.

A Course in MiraclesDr. Helen Schucman – All I can say is get ready to open your heart to a new expanded view of Jesus’s message. You must have a very open mind and heart for this one, so you might want to wait a bit before reading. This book is also tough reading, in that, it’s written in similar style to biblical text. The workbook attached with this book is also a fantastic tool for guidance and inspiration.

Paulo CoelhoThe Alchemist – What a brilliant book. A classic story where the messages run deep and powerful. But, during the lesson, which will inspire you, enjoy the magic of this story.

Dan MillmanThe Way of the Peaceful Warrior – A Book that Changes Lives – Using the art of story, that was based on Millman real life experiences, Millman shares some deep truths about the limitations we place on ourselves and the true nature of life. Some of the concepts are deep and difficult to face within ourselves, but Millman using the books main true life character and sage, Socrates, teaches us about them very effectively. This book was later made into a Major Motion picture, which starred Nick Nolte (while he was still in him prime), and I really enjoyed the movie as well.

Timothy Ferris4 Hour Workweek – Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich – If you want an adrenaline rush for personal empowerment and initiating change in your life for your career, or really anything you are passionate about, this is your book. This book is a multi-million best seller, for good reason. I have read this book multiple times and every time I just get pumped about doing something more to live my life from within my passion.

Wayne DyerWishes Fulfilled – Mastering the Art of Manifesting – I had to add this one as well as Dr. Dyers first book, The Power of Intention, because as his newest book release, Dr. Dyer has a new important message he wanted to share. This book is extremely motivating and will be read and reviewed by me many, many times. Dyer’s writing is always captivating and easy to read and full of ideas and inspiration.

I would be remiss if I did not include my own book in this list, Finding Home – Breaking Free from Limits. Obviously I believe this book is a powerful tool for spiritual and personal empowerment. I cannot deny the amazing inspiration many of the books above have contributed to the writing of my book, but I do provide the reader with a new perspective and insight. The focus in Finding Home is on identifying and breaking through limitations and barriers in our lives and I offer the readers many new choices and tools to approach change in your life to gain immediate personal/spiritual empowerment.

Dear Friends – if you are on a path to life enrichment, personal and spiritual empowerment or just need some comfort and peace in your life, I encourage you to pick up any of these magnificent books. They nurture, inspire, motivate and enrich. I guarantee you cannot go wrong with any of them. I wish you a fantastic journey into an amazing life. Blessings – Joleen
