A Beautiful Young Hymn

As God has been teaching me to see beauty through His perspective, I've found myself focusing in on old hymns such as "It Is Well With My Soul," "Amazing Grace," "Jesus, Savior Pilot Me," and others. There is something overwhelmingly attractive about the transparency that these hymns hold, and there is something overwhelmingly beautiful about the way in which these songs lay out the mysterious collision between inherent disunion with God and this God's deep desire for a relationship with a selfish, fallen, and deviant people and creation. It is in this collision of God's creation crying out to Him and glorifying His name that I feel true beauty is discovered. Not in self focus or glory but drawing focus and glory to the creator of all. Colossians 1:16 tells us that, "For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him." The Psalmist who wrote Pslam 96 knew that all of creation longs to magnify it's creator's name saying "Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it! Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord..." Finding communion in the origin is the underlying desire of God's people and His creation whether they realize it's Him who they desire to glorify or are blind to it. This is why in Luke 19, as Jesus is riding into Jerusalem right before He is crucified, the pharisees asked Jesus to rebuke His disciples who were glorifying Him but Jesus replies saying, "I tell you, if they keep quiet the stones will cry out." Finally, this is where my visual self kicked in. I was sitting and listening to a young lady leading around 100 (and the following week over 500!) 6th-12th graders in worship and I thought to myself, "She has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard." I thought about that initial thought. Yes, her voice is very elegant. It has a texture that flows in a rough yet harmonious wave. But the beauty of her voice isn't found in her voice itself, but in who her voice gives glory and praise to and how she leads others to who gave her such a blessed gift. Her life reminds me a lot of the hymns of old; a rawness and transparency that doesn't try to bring glory to herself, but invites others to glorify a God who is very real to her and who is working through her. With God's glory and His love for His creation rolling off of each syllable she sings, I realized that all of creation is waiting to join in singing praises with her. I wrote a poem encapsulating the image I get when I hear her voice; this image of her leading all of creation in worshiping and proclaiming the praises of her savior and creator. Here it is... (This poem was also inspiration to write a song which I'll be posting soon.)

In a green pasture lays a beautiful young hymn,

She whispers a song with the harmonious wind,

Tumultuous verses dance with a love which transcends,

Each verse moves the grass and praises ascend,

He hands raised, eyes lifted, the moon illuminates her skin,

She beckons even constellations and planets to join in,

"God of wonders beyond our galaxy,

you are Holy, you are Holy," sung again and again,

Until all of creation is singing whether mouse, rock, or men,

They all try to imitate by means of an emulator who is foreign,

As she writes notes with her lips as if using a pen,

It is Christ overflowing from her that you can't measure,

can't comprehend,

Cause her savoir, her creator, has no beginning or end,

In a green pasture lays a beautiful young hymn,

To lead God's creation in worship is her eternal mission,

For she is one of God's chosen and to the world she'll bring exultation,

Amen...

(God's given you a specific and unique gift... The most beautiful thing you can do is to selflessly give it back to him by using it to glorify His name and bring others face-to-face with Him.)

A lot of feeling and truth here, truth and glory belong to God the creator! And high praises from the heart! God's will...will...be...done! A new world not of our making is on the way...because God is its creator!

Voted - up! and beautiful! Well-written.
