Act now to stop the execution of Asia Bibi for being a Christian

Source

“Our Christ sacrificed His life on the cross for our sins.... Our Christ is alive.”

- Asia's response to her co-workers urging her to abandon her faith.

Asia Bibi is a Pakistani woman who is the wife of Ashiq and mother of 2 daughters Asha and Isham. She is sentenced to death because it was reported by her co-workers to the Pakistani police that she is a Christian. Upon finding out Asia was a Christian her co-workers tried tirelessly to discourage her from her faith and urged her to Islam. When she would not convert to Islam her co-workers beat her in the field they worked in. She was then taken by some men and locked in a room. They told the town from the mosque loudspeakers that her punishment for being a Christian would be having her face blackened and being paraded through the village on a donkey- the ultimate act of humiliation in this culture. Local Christians called the Police to help Asia and they took her into custody before the Muslims could enact her humiliation. Christians there urged the police not to file blasphemy charges, but police stated they were facing pressure from local Muslim leaders to do so.

Asia was then charged with Blasphemy (becoming a Christian and denying Islam) and has now been in prison for 884 days (17 months) Since sentencing Asia waits on death row till the time of her impending execution. This is a gross injustice and a wicked act of wrong- doing against a woman who has lived a peaceful and honest life, causing no harm to anyone.

What is a source of hope for Asia, her family and all Christians through- out the world is that her attorneys have filed an appeal to the High Court of Lahore and now await their decision. If they reject the appeal, Asia would be the first woman to be lawfully executed under Pakistan’s blasphemy laws. Asia remains in prison, waiting to hear the high court’s ruling.

All this time Asia has stood firm in her faith, refusing to turn her back on her Lord. But she does not stand alone in this terrifying time of trial. The Voice of the Martyrs (VOM) have launched a worldwide petition to free Asia from her prison cell and from her death sentence. So far almost half a million people have signed it:

The Lahore High Court will decide whether to accept Asia'a appeal or uphold her death sentence for blasphemy.
The Lahore High Court will decide whether to accept Asia'a appeal or uphold her death sentence for blasphemy.

At the time of writing this article (22:21 GMT 19TH Nov 2011) the petition number stood at 485,971.

It is hoped that if this petition reaches 1 Million that the Lahore High Court will accept the appeal for Asia's life and set her free. International pressure has saved Christians facing unlawful imprisonment and execution in the past, and it can happen again with your help. Please go to www.callformercy.com and sign the petition to save Asia, our faithful sister in the Lord and also circulate news of this to your friends, families and Church's. You can actually check back through- out the day at the petition counter as it rises. It raised by 20 signatures as I wrote this article. There is hope!
