Spider Mythology

The spider can be seen in so many legends and stories that it's almost hard to find just a few to discuss here. Unfortunately, the spider is not always portrayed in a good light (as one might imagine) which has probably helped fuel the ever-present fear of them in modern times. For our sake and purpose, we will be focusing on the positive stories of the spider.

In Caribbean and West African folklore, there is a tricky yet smart spider known as Anansi. Anansi is said in Ghana to have tricked three animals thereby leading to his purchase of all of the world's stories from the sky god Nyame. He was tricky, but extremely wise too. This deity or spirit became almost an inspiration for many slaves that came to America, as Anansi represented the ability to outsmart his superiors (or oppressors) and come out on top, so to speak.

To the Native American Pueblo and Dineh people, there is a creator goddess known as Spider Grandmother. Because the stories of Spider Grandmother are all an oral tradition, there isn't a wealth of information on her, but the legend goes that Spider Grandmother spun a web of dew and flung it into the sky - thereby putting the stars into place.

For many modern day Pagans, the spider web is a symbol of great power and beauty. They view the spider as a small form of the Mother Goddess, one imbued with the powers of creation and deep wisdom. They say it will provide good health to have a spider web in possession on the body, possibly in a bag around the neck. The spider also represents a darker aspect of the goddess, many times associated with the Crone.

Spider Spirit Guide

The spider spirit guide has much to teach us. She weaves a web of knowledge and wisdom, one that ties together the greatest mysteries of life and of the universe. Her web represents creation, our unity, and lives not yet lived.

If you're doing some past life regression work, the spider spirit guide can be quite helpful. As mentioned before, her web can represent the many lives you've lived both past and the lives you will live in the future. Call on your spider spirit guide for aid in past life dreamwork and meditations.

Speaking of dreams, the spider spirit guide is the great "dream weaver", so if a spider comes to you in a dream she is probably inviting you to go further into your dreams to find hidden meanings. It is possible that you are a natural lucid dreamer and that the spider spirit guide is here for you to awaken in your dreams. Think about the way a dream catcher looks...it resembles a spider's web, doesn't it?

Many spiders are also very protective of their young and make for wonderful, loving mothers. Perhaps the spider spirit guide is here to protect you with her strong web of life. Keep in mind that some spiders spin webs as thick as silk.

Connecting with Your Spider Spirit Guide

So how do we connect with our spider spirit guides? Have you walked through a spiderweb lately? It could very well be that your spider spirit guide is trying to get your attention. For a few months, every time I would walk out to my car in the morning I would walk right through a spider web. I would curse, then pick the invisible strings off of me. Then I realized...it was my spider spirit guide trying to get my attention! Sometimes all we have to do is pay attention to our spirit guides' signs and messages.

Try making your own dreamcatcher. While doing so, visualize making contact with your spider spirit guide. Ask her to come to you in your dreams and to give you her message. Also, you can visualize yourself as a spider spinning a web of life and visions.

Connect with some of the spider deities. Spider Grandmother is an especially kind-hearted Native American deity with all the wisdom of the universe to offer. She has come to me on several occasions, and I've realized that all spider spirit guides are interconnected with deities of the same kind.

If spiders tend to scare you but you know your spirit guide is indeed a spider, conquer your fears head on. Watch a documentary on spiders, or go outside and find one. Say hello. See the wonderful things about the spider and appreciate the things she does for nature.

If you see one in your house, don't kill it! It is bad luck. My stepfather never killed a spider in his house. He said they kept the flies out and that it would bring bad luck. Plus, don't you think your spider spirit guide would be offended if you killed one of her kind?

I've done it before, but I refuse to do it any longer...it is most definitely bad luck to kill one in your home.

I'm reluctant to kill a spider if I see one at home, too, especially because I've already heard before that killing one brings bad luck. I'd rather call for a butterfly as my guide, though...I don't know why, but I'm enchanted by butterflies.

i guess the spider has a thing or two to teach me... being drained of blood is inhumane. i guess what she, the spider, was trying to tell me is to not take so much blood from my victims because it may have a toll on my future (whether i am cought by police, or killed by a slayer)... i think i am starting to understand what she meant by doing that to me now... i will take it as a warning and i will work on living off less blood

NS - Aren't you a vampire? Kind of ironic right?

lipnancy - Haha, sounds like they are.

NS - Sounds like she wants to wrap you up and drain you of your blood...more or less it sounds like she's trying to give you a new beginning.

Austinstar - I'd never heard of the amakua...very cool! And you are more prolific than you think!

In Hawaii, a spirit guide is known as an amakua. My spirit guide and amakua is the dolphin. I wish I was a dolphin. Spiders are cool as long as they stay outside. I have no desire to have a run in with a black widow or a brown recluse.

Excellent informative hub as usual kitty. I wish I could be as prolific as you :-)

by the way kitty, the spiders i see in the dream world are huge, like i mean as big as a horse... in my contact last night one of the spiders told me to get on his back so he could take me to where they live... so i did... that was easy enough to understand but what happened next was out of this world to me... now i don't know if it is normal for the spider to have a sense of humor but one of the females (not the Queen Spider) covered me with sticky, gooey web... if anyone reading this knows what that was all about please let me know

Great hub. The spiders are trying to tell us something for sure. They have decided to take over my house and my car this year.

Kitty another wonderfully informative hub. Since reading your hub on the practice of Wicca and Paganism in teens I have been re-introducing myself to a belief system I hadn't explored for years...always a struggle my traditional beliefs have really been stifling me these past few years. I want to thank-you for the above information and for also opening through your work a window of exploration.

i am a master at lucid dreaming... i will try to get in contact tonight with my spirit guide... and i am not afraid of spiders either... when in the dream world i am busy with other things, interacting with other people not from this world, but tonight i will focus on what the spiders have to say to me

oh my gosh!!! kitty i walk through spider webs all the time... not on purpose of course... do you think the spider is my spirit guide? i also see spiders in my dreams but never once listened to a word they had to say... What do you think i should do?

Kitty - Another interesting hub. I never even considered spiders as any type of a spirit guide. The web of knowledge concept may, indeed, be more than a clever use of words by many. I have no fear of them as most, but I do admit to killing them as my house seems to be infested by them at times.

In all seriousness, I really have no fear of any creature of nature. Of course, a healthy respect of larger predators is given, but I've never stood in fear of one. Perhaps in tune, perhaps a little stupid. Still, I've never felt out of place with any animal. Enough rambling. Great and informative Hub as always!
