"Head, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes"

One of the most popular exercises is "touch your toes". When as a baby we are learning the parts of the body we might be asked by a doting family member can you "Touch your toes!" As we got older the novelty wore off as it become more of a chore than a pleasure. Then we went to school and the teacher would use not only our fingers but also our toes to teach us to count and then to use them to assist with sums. Our toes became one of the areas of our bodies that we wanted to know nothing about. As boys toes were necessary when we were expected to toe the ball into the net or assisted us to find a starting point such as "toes on the line" but what about the warning that would be shouted to encourage us to increase our speed or our attention with "toe the line".

The number of toes were considered to come to 10 but sometimes this was not always the case. Although the body was meant to have 10 it didn't mean that with all the possible alterations to the human autonomy we could but adapt and overcome the differences.

Some people have been able to learn to use their toes to do everything that a set of fingers could do. It amazes us and we are in awe of how humans can adapt to shortages in our human autonomy. Our toes fill our foot ware and can assist us in some simple tasks such as turn off the tap in the bath or lift something small. However just like all parts of the body they can be hurt such as when we hit our toe of the bed in the dark. It is amazing how sore that can be!!!

Our toes have a great sense of feeling for example as we walk across the beach we can feel the soft sand seeping between our toes and then when we reach the water we can feel the cold and wet, mucky sand and water swirl around and between and over our toes. Our toes are as sensitive as our fingers and need almost the same care.

Toes are mentioned 8 times in the Bible 2 of these reference the consecration of the priests. Another 2 tell about the frightening men of Gath who were so big and had 6 fingers on each hand and 6 toes on each foot. Another 2 verses tell about Adoni-Bezek who was capture by the Israelites and had his big toes and thumbs cut off. Finally the last 2 verses are about Nebuchadnezzar’s dream and in his dream he say a large statue and its toes were partly iron and partly clay, so this kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle. This is the what the references to toes are in the Bible.

Worshipping at His feet

I always think that the best place to be is at the Lord's feet. Of all the toes in the world, I think that looking down on His would remind me of many things.

When He was a baby His soft, perfect and cute little toes would remind me of the prefect planned birth of My Lord. As a young child His toes would have received their share of knocks, cuts and bumps. This would remind me of My Lord's life in general. He walked His life either bare footed or in sandals, His feet would have got dirty, received cuts and maybe even thorns and hard skin. He may have twisted His ankle or lost a toe nail. The Lord's feet would have seen many different paths and in all of them my Lord showed nothing but love for all whom He met. His feet may have spent a lot of time on the ground but I feel that this reminds me that walking the path the Lord calls us to walk will have its hard times but we can rest assured that He will be there to assist us. The Lord was not ashamed of feet as He was willing to wash His disciples feet and not only is this an example for us all but it makes me feel humble that He was willing to take on that task.

Our feet may be considered at the base of our body but without feet we would be unable to stand upright, walk, run etc. Toes make this possible and so even thought they may be small they play an important part in the whole of the body. As God's children we are all important and although we may feel that our part is small it is very important in the body of Christ.

The stub on the toe prayer

Dear Heavenly Father as we walk alone life's road help us not to "stub our toes" on the rocks that our walk may come across but help us Lord to keep our eyes (faith) on the footprints (Your Word) that You have left before us. However Lord we are but human and when our eyes stray so can our foot steps and we pray that You will enable us to feel the "stub on the toe" that reminds us that we have strayed from Your guiding path. As we feel the sand of our path seeping between our toes help us to remember to hold even tighter to You. If we should get stuck in the mud and the feel of the wet sticky clay covering our toes help us to call on You for assistance. But as life goes on and we feel the rain, sun and cold of the seasons may our feet (toes) not grow weary of following You. May we always be in close communion with You. You are our saviour and our friend and we need you on this quest to live the life that You have given us to live. May our toes never grow weary from following You. Amen

Kids Songs

O be careful little feet where you go
Little feet, be very careful where you go,
O be careful little feet where you go
As in life you daily travel to and fro;
There's a Father up above
Never for a moment stray
And He's looking down in love
From the straight and holy way;
So, be careful little feet where you go
Oh, be careful, be careful, little feet.

Be careful little hands what you do
