Casting Spells that Work: Creating Channels
There’s more to casting spells that work than just following a script. In fictional Witchcraft, the Witch mutters a rhyme or points a wand, and poof! The very thing they desire materializes, either right away or in a short amount of time. This has given people the mistaken idea that Witchcraft is the easy road to getting what you want without having to make any effort other than following the spell’s instructions. They come to it with the idea that all you have to do is learn a few techniques and, poof, those things you want most – money, love, popularity, etc. – will begin streaming into their lives.
Other people think that if chanting and candlelight does not bring what you want without work, that it means Witchcraft doesn’t actually work at all.
In my opinion, both groups of people are wrong. I’m a firm believer that the Craft works, but it’s not instant gratification that comes without effort. When you perform a magical working or cast a spell, you have to provide it with a channel.
Magic is Energy
Energy Travels: Give It A Route
What Is a Channel?
Part of the fundamental idea behind casting a spell is that it’s a process of raising energy and directing that energy toward your goal. This energy mingles with the object of your desire and gives it a push in your direction. This is what sets the process in motion.
Think of energy like electricity. Electricity doesn’t just float around in the air-- it travels along conduits. It runs along wires. When lightening comes down in a bolt it seeks to take the shortest distance—it seeks out something conductive, like a tree, down which it can travel. Like water flowing down the mountain, energy seeks and takes the path of least resistance.
In magic, the path your energy takes is sometimes referred to as a channel. It’s like creating a conduit for that energy that you raised and directed.
I'm not a big fan of the Frosts' ideas about Wicca (neither their books nor their school), but they do have some brilliant insights when it comes to magic and spell casting.
Casting Spells and Providing Channels
The most effective spells that work will have a channel for that energy to travel. Let’s consider how channels work in two different scenarios. Imagine two different people cast spells for money.
Hilda casts her spell and provides herself with several channels. She applies for a promotion at work, and she works her butt off to be a stellar employee and get notice. She writes people who’ve owed her money from the past and asks them to pay her back, in whole or part, if they are able. She puts some garage sale items she found up for sale on EBay. Hilda is creating a very strong conduits for her energy to take, so that the energy will remain strong and focused.
Herbie, on the other hand, doesn’t bother with a channel. He casts his spell, then just goes on with life as usual. No one owes him money. He’s just getting by at work, he’s not applying for better jobs or for a second job. He’s not even applying for loans. In what way does Herbie expect this money he wanted to come to him? Did he think a package was going to fall out of the sky into his lap? Even if his spell was performed perfectly, that energy he sent out has no channel—it’s simply going to weaken and eventually disperse.
Some Possible Channels for Magic Spells
Apply for promotions/new jobs; apply for loans/grants; start a new home business; put items up for sale
Join an online dating website; begin getting out more to places you enjoy, looking good and ready to flirt; ask friends to set you up on blind dates; hit a single’s cruise
Go to a doctor for treatment; follow your treatment plan; take CARE of yourself; start paying attention to your diet & exercise needs; seek out and use alternative healers in conjunction with conventional medicine
Don’t speed on the highway; get an alarm installed; lock your doors; follow safety regulations and recommendations for whatever you’re doing; take self-defense
How To Sense Energy
Just following along with instructions to cast a spell is not enough; that's just dabbling, and your . results will always be hit or miss.

Ineffective Channels for Magic
When casting spells, some channels are better than others. And some definitely suck. Primarily these are channels in which there will be competing energies.
Using money spells as an example again, an ineffective channel would be buying lottery tickets. High competition for the prize is what makes it ineffective. Lots of people are aiming their energy at the same thing. Even people who are not casting spells are still, unwittingly, sending energy toward the big winnings just by their own excitement force of will. When energy from different directions is tugging on one object, they negate each other.
Casting spells on other people without their consent and cooperation makes for poor channels as well. Everyone has a will of his own. Even if they don’t focus and direct energy through spells, there is a certain amount of energy transference that comes and goes through their own thoughts and emotions. When you cast spells on someone who is not in compliance, whatever channels you set up can be easily blocked, deflected, disrupted, distorted, etc. simply by it competing with the energy generated by their own will and feelings.
This is why it’s always better to cast spells on yourself rather than on unsuspecting other people. For example, cast a spell on yourself for excellent performance on your job so you impress your boss, rather than on your boss to force an artificially formed opinion on you. Likewise, it’s better to cast a spell on yourself to draw compatible lovers into your life, rather than to cast a spell on a person to create artificially formed feelings for you.
Always choose a channel that is the most direct to your goal—the one that gives the greatest odds.

Why even Bother?
Some people will say, “If you have to work for something, why even bother casting a spell?” Well, it’s true—it’s not like you need Witchcraft to accomplish things in life. But the way I see it, any little boost that will help me toward my goals, give me an edge, is something of which I’m going to take full advantage.
After all, that's what Witchcraft is about-- it's about helping you attain your needs and desires; helping you fulfill your goals. It's not about the special effects in big Hollywood productions, or living out fantasies; it's about transforming your life in reality.
Spells that work incorporate both the mundane and the magical—covering all your bases.
