City of Enoch

The Begats

In the Bible, the book of Genesis only offers a small exerpt on the ministry of Enoch, the son of Jared and father of Methuselah. The most noteworthy passage tells that he was translated without experiancing death; Gen 5:24 "And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him."

One would think that a man of such righteousness who walked with God and saw him face to face would have a little more detail about his life. In my mind the story is too short, it leaves the reader only to believe that the book of Genesis was completely abridged and much detail was left out. Rather I find solice in the testimony of Moses who gave an extended account of Enoch in the Pearl of Great Price. A further clarification is added by inspiration Where it states; "And Enoch and all his people walked with God, and he dwelt in the midst of Zion; and it came to pass that Zion was not, for God received it up into his own bosom."

Another instance of over abridging would be the significant birth of Peleg who's name ment "Division" because the earth was divided when he was born, But what about this division? Were the people divided? of could it have been the continents? This small passage is also clarified in the Docterine and Covenants when the lord states,D&C 133: 24 "And the land of Jerusalem and the land of Zion shall be turned back into their own place and the earth shall be like as it was in the days before it was divided."

The other Enoch

In Genesis 4:17 it refers to a different City which was built by an Enoch who was a son of Cain, To avoid confusion, the city built by Enoch (the descendant of Cain,) was called the City of Enoch, where the one built by Enoch (the descendant of Seth,) was called Zion. A pure city and habitation of the Lord. It states In Moses 7:18 "And the Lord called his people Zion because they were of one heart and one mind, and dwelt in righteousness; and there was no poor among them."

Enoch testified continually of the coming of Jesus Christ in the meridian of times for the redemption of the world. He saw in vision the slaying of the lamb of God and his resurection, and also Christ's return when he wil reign on earth for a thousand years. He sorrowfully watched the growing wickedness of the people in his days as they began to fill the earth, and the Lord showed him the trials of Noah, and the flood, and further to the ends of the Earth along with all of the things to come until the end.

He moved mountains by the command of his voice, and was so feared by the strength of his voice among the people that he overcame all of his enemies. Enoch saw God face to face and numerous concourses of angels in the heavens. He became a great prophet to the people and baptized them by the commands of God in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

His ministry is given in explicit detail in the book of Moses, where the existence of a man who's inspired testimony and miraculous existence is emphatically understated in the Book of Genesis.

I think Enoch is one of my favorite prophets. As Joseph Smith was working on restoring some of the plain and precious truths back to The Bible by the process of revelation, he came across many things he did not understand. He simply asked of the Lord and was given the answer... today we have those answers in the form of the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. It might be interesting to note that he was commanded to start the correction process with the Old Testament and as soon as he understood who Enoch and Zion really were, he was commanded by the Lord to stop the Old Testament work and begin work on the New Testament. I believe that was because he needed to understand what the goal was for us to accomplish, that goal being Zion. After he understood the nature of the goal he then worked on how to achieve that goal and that is taught best by Christ himself, as witnessed in the New Testament and the Book of Mormon.

Enoch showed us what we are to strive for... Christ teaches us how to get it.

Enoch - one of the greatest prophets and certainly a favorite of mine. As to why there is so little written of him it does cause a person to wonder. Could be several reasons, one may be some of that info is for advanced spiritual people only as could be detrimental in immature careless hands. After all, Enoch was well versed in spiritual authority and how sound and words work in the universe.

The most likely reason so little is told of him is that generations of editors made a real mess of things. Any way you look at it, it certainly gives us plenty to think about and question, sending those queries out into the universe, awaiting God's reply! Great hub, thanks!

There wasn't that little written of Enoch. An entire apocryphal book is devoted to him that has found its way into some, but not many, Bibles.

Correct, although I havn't taken the apocrypha for scripture, I have heard that they found a book of his account in the Dead Sea Scrolls. It is a contraversial subject. Makes me wonder what happened with Melchizedek too.

GRIM REAPER 7 years ago

Book of Enoch, is a false gospel, if it can even be called a gospel, written about 200BC and never was in the true bible, and caused many people to be confused. There are three Enoch's and only the seventh from Adam was taken, there were no books written by him either and he never preached about Jesus. so this little insert is twisted, and not in line with the bible.

Of course it is in line with the Bible but this article is not about the book of Enoch, it is about the city of Enoch which is found in the Book of Moses. this is inspired LDS doctrine translated by the Prophet Joseph Smith. Very congruent with Biblical teachings.

I can't speak with absolute certainty but I seem to recall that the City of Zion was founder by Enos son of Seth. It was founded in the land of Cainan named for the son of Enos. The city seems to already been founded by Enochs time. It was called the City of Enoch because of his great spiritual leadership in the city. Much like Nauvoo was called The City of Joseph. I would love to receive comments from anyone who might offer more enlightment on the subject.

Repent of this wickedness. Pick up your Bible and learn about the True God of Israel. Not the Joseph Smith imitation. Jesus is Lord. LDS's need Jesus. Repent now. Read the Gospel.

Tony,

What part of the church is wicked?

Loving our neighbors and families? feeding the hungry? Administering to the sick and afflicted?

Providing disaster relief to victims of floods, huricains, and earthquakes?

Providing higher education opportunities to the less fortunate?

Providing vaccines, and other forms of medical assistance to third world countries?

Donating our time and efforts to building Christ centered communities?

Instilling high moral values in our children, while speaking out against such deceptive vices as drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and pornography?

Keeping the sabbath day holy?

Praying, fasting, scripture study?

What about the confessions of a former mormon who told about all that wife-swapping that was going on in the church of the latter day saints?

That's news to me. I've never in my 33 years of being a member of the LDS church ever heard of, or witnessed such a thing.

i cannot believe that people still believe and this bible wich was writteng by primitive people more then 2000 yrs ago, theres a lot of contradiction, slavery, and death in the old and new testament... enoch knew much more then all of this prophets, and he was banned from the bible for the convinient of the christian monetary.. how can a book of the most powerful being (as christian belief thing) has to be sold and not given, why would churches has to be so big and expensive? why do u ask for money in churches? this is a scam and a brainwash, u all are this puppets of the christian mafia.. feel so sorry for all of you

What's contradictory is the fact that you profess to know so much about Enoch and yet the rest of the Bible you believe to be untrue. If you think the world is such a bad place with religion, just imagine how utterly execrable socioty would be without it.

I write this small piece because there is a book written by Enoch himself, this book was never published in the Bible or in any other book but instead 900 copies of the book were sent to Eithiopia, it is today why most the people of Eithiopia are Muslim, sprinkled with various other religions.

There seem's to be no real reason as to why this book was never published as one of the book's of the Bible yet it never was, nor was the book published in the quran, though the book of Enoch can be seen and read since I do believe it to have been converted from it's original language, however this part I'm uncertain of since I have never been to Eithiopia but my brother is married to an Eithiopian Princess.

He has been there and it is not through him I know this it is through my own research of my own family.

As I and my family stretching back over thousands of years were king's of these lands in Asia and Eurasia into Ireland and the UK.

I am a Descendant of the Scythian Race who are said to have been born of the first man, the first man said to be of the Nephilim (Raphaim)Giant's who's real origin's may well have been in Siberia, they could have spread out into Bashan and have been the descendants of Og Who were destroyed by Moses, he himself Hebrew and not a Jew was also Pharaho Akanatan King of Egypt and not just a leader of the Isrealites.

great post man. I wrote The city of Enoch into a sci fi film I'm about to shoot in MAY. love the idea of the city being taken up.

I am descendant of the human race, of which there is both good and evil. Debate is good, bickering is bad. My thoughts on Zion are that maybe Babel was trying to get to heaven with the tower because maybe (just maybe), Zion was still visible.

This is great, just found this site, oh by the way @ hsbr00m24, the bible didn't exist over 2000 yrs ago & I understand your skepticism that religion has become big business, but if you investigate closer there is one church I know of that does not have paid ministry. cao

Onusonus profile image

Onusonus 4 years ago from washington Author

Antoonv, I don't remember implying any skepticism towards religion. If I did I apologize. I think that organized religion is necessary for our salvation, and the growing trend of agnosticism in our society is a sad state of affairs which repels spiritual growth. I am a Mormon and my religion does not have any paid ministry either.

Thanks for reading.

This is a succinct tribute to the life of Enoch, a man of God. It does not have all the clutter of expert or historical interpretation, which is what makes it so good to me. I appreciated it even though as I read it again I feared it was too short because I wanted more. I voted this up and shared it again because it is worth the read.

Thanks Rodrick. I wrote this four years ago so it's one of my first hubs. Something you can see with all writers is that they get better over time as they write.

What is interesting to me is that the first thing Joseph Smith ever put his name on was the Book of Mormon, which is a great and very poetic book. Something a young man with a third grade education couldn't possibly write.

I just ran across this site, I love the doctrine and the defense in behalf of the church. Enoch was a perfect man, a man "who walked with god" and witnessed God weeping over his creations (moses 7:28). I just wish that all people would take the contention out of their hearts and learn the doctrine of who God is. If we read that chapter closely, we also learn the reason for Gods weeping.

32. "The Lord said unto Enoch: Behold these thy brethren; they are the workmanship of mine own hands, and I gave unto them their knowledge, in the day I created them; and in the Garden of Eden, gave I unto man his agency;

33 And unto thy brethren have I said, and also given commandment, that they should love one another, and that they should choose me, their Father; but behold, they are without affection, and they hate their own blood;"

God weeps for the souls he has created because of their choosing to be wicked. It must break Heavenly Fathers heart knowing that the wonderful gift of "agency" that he so freely gave to us, is only to some of his children's detriment. Keep up the good work in promoting the faith.
