Common Psychic Dreams

Source

Throughout history, there have been stories of people who have had dreams in a psychic nature. The Bible, Torah, Quran and Pagan mythology all contain stories of psychic dreams. Psychic dreams are indeed very common, however, many people who have had a psychic dream will not admit it. They may fear that people won't believe them or think they are crazy.

People should not feel ashamed to share their experience because everyone has a sixth sense. Some people's sixth sense are more finely tuned while others suppress it. Even those who suppress this sense during waking hours will sometimes have a dream that is psychic.

There are a few different types of psychic dreams that you may have.

Telepathic, Prophetic and Clairvoyant Dreams

A telepathic dream is a dream where the subconscious mind taps into the mind of another person. In a telepathic dream, a person can communicate back and forth with another person. This can happen when a loved one has been admitted to the hospital or is in danger. Many people have woken up abruptly after having such a dream.

The prophetic dream tells of a future event. It could be a warning but not always. A prophetic dream could be positive. Some people dream of their future spouses, future children or of a new job. Another example is dreaming of a friend you have not seen in years and then the next day you run into that person. Perhaps the most famous example of a prophetic dream was that of Abraham Lincoln, who dreamed of his own assassination and told many people about it.

A clairvoyant dream is like a prophetic dream, but on a larger scale. The clairvoyant dream is not personal, it is a dream that foresees a future disaster that may affect hundreds or thousands of people. An earthquake, a plane crash and a terrorist attack are examples. Many people had clairvoyant dreams before a natural disaster. The 9/11 attacks, the Titanic sinking and the World Wars were all predicted by many people through their dreams.

Out of Body Experiences

The out of body experience (OBE), also known as astral projection, is a strange, psychic phenomenon. During your sleep, your spirit may actually leave your body. People who have had OBEs claim that their spirit will float to the ceiling, and they can actually see themselves asleep. Many times a person will see a silver cord attaching themselves to their physical body. Similar to what happens at the end of our lives, except when we die, the cord is cut.

Leaving the physical body, the spirit is able to travel in the astral plane. This experience has not only been documented in dreams, but in near death experiences, where the dying person is brought back after the heart has stopped. It has also happened frequently to people who are under anesthesia and in surgery. Astral projection can also occur during deep meditation (such as with Buddhists).

Astral travel is documented in ancient writings, including in the bible (Ecclesiastes), in the Hindu spiritual text, Yoga Vasistha and the Quran. The Amazons and early Japanese teachings also tell stories of astral travel. It is an experience that can be traced back thousands of years.

Visitation Dreams

After a loved one has passed on, they may come visit us in our dreams. Our loved one look healthy and young again. Sometimes the dream is important and our loved one has a message to pass on to us. Other times, they just miss us and want to see us again.

Usually, right after a person has died, s/he may come back in our dreams, only to tell us they are happy and that it's okay to go on. This is extremely common.

Our dreams may take us to a special place during our visit. We may be in a beautiful garden, near water or in a lush forest. These types of dreams almost always take place outside and in a nature setting. Unless our loved one is warning us of something, the dreamer may awake from this type of dream feeling peaceful and comforted.

How Can I Tell If My Dream Was a Psychic Dream?

If your dream was a psychic dream, you will usually know right off the bat it was one. Once in a while it may be hard to tell. There are three questions to ask yourself after having a dream that may be psychic:

Did my dream feel real?

Were there symbols in my dream?

How did I feel after I woke up?

A psychic dream will seem real to the dreamer. There will be a lack of symbols and 'silliness' that is common in many of our dreams. Upon awaking, the dreamer will feel a bit confused and a sense of urgency will accompany this. The dream will stay with you for a while and unlike ordinary dreams, every detail will be remembered.

Have you ever experienced a psychic dream?

  • Yes, it has happened to me often.
  • Yes, it happened once or twice.
  • I think I may have, but I'm not sure.
  • No, I don't believe in psychic dreams or a sixth sense.

Hi amymarie...Once again, you have written an intriguing hub that I can easily relate to....with pleasant memories of these psychic dreams.....and some not at all pleasant.

You have stated with accuracy how we are able to KNOW when our dream was of a psychic nature. In fact, when I first began to read your hub, I literally got chills up m spine.

Just 2 nights ago, I had such a dream and have been wrestling with my conscience wondering if I should share my dream with the actual person in this dream. I honestly don't know how she would trandlate it or if it may upset her too much.

I am curious, Amy.....what would you do in this siuation ?

I truly enjoyed your slant on this subject. You definitely have an excellent grasp on the intricacies of psychic dreams.......Peace. UP ++++

Hi Fpherj48,

How are you? Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts / experience. I have psychic dreams often, seems like when I'm feeling more sensitive it happens more.

I think you should tell this person about the dream but be careful of how you bring it up. If the person doesn't believe in this sort of thing it may make it harder. I would test the waters first, see what kind of opinion they have on the subject. I think if it's bothering your conscious then it is because the person needs to know.

It's not easy but it is probably the best thing to do. Good luck. I hope it works out.

Thanks again and I really appreciate you sharing your experience.

Exceptional Hub, Amymarie -- yes, psychic dreams have been a definite reality for me for many years -- some encouraging and some prophetic. fpherj48 has hit the problem right on the head. Does one confide in the person about who they have dreamed or not? Your answer is a good one -- literally "it all depends." Voted up! Best/Sis

Hi amymarie. Congrats on another great hub. Utter coincidence, but I had a visitation dream just last night. That makes about 4 now in the 8 years since my husband died. I also had the best sleep I´ve had in ages.

Thanks AMY! Oh, I know her well...she's a long time buddy...and she does believe in these things.....I am glad you said that if it's bothering me (and it is) that means I'm supposed to tell her.......You're absolutely right.

Hi Fpherj48,

I'm so glad she is a believer. It will be so much easier to talk to her. Yes, I still think it is the right decision. I hope it goes well and I hope you can help her. Let me know how it goes!

Hi Bac2Basics,

Thanks for commenting and sharing your experience. I also have visitation dreams from my father. It's been a while. Hope he visits again soon. I miss him. What a coincidence that your husband just visited you the other night. Maybe you were meant to read this. I'm glad you were comforted and able to get some good sleep! All my best to you!

Thanks for stopping by Angela. You are right, it is definitely a hard decision. I would tell the person, especially if it was something very serious and if something bad could be prevented from happening. Take care!

Loved this hub because dreams are among my favorite subjects. I had a few experiences when I was a kid of predicting things I eventually went through in high school. Fascinating article and you wrote it so well. Voted up, awesome, and interesting :)

Thank you Olde Cashmere. I truly appreciate that! I also had frequent psychic experiences as a kid. I think as we get older we learn to ignore our intuitive side.

Glad you stopped by and commented!

This is a lovely Hub and on a topic I am very interested in and firmly believe in. I have experienced some of the kinds of dreams described here, and don't doubt I had them for a reason. I certainly know I had a horrible and vivid dream on one occasion that my Mum and Step Dad went on holiday to Cyprus and Mum was shot and killed by a robber/mugger. I warned her about it at the time. About 2 years later her and my Step Dad announced they had booked to go on holiday to Cyprus (clearly having forgotten my warning from 2 years before). I quickly told them they couldn't possibly go, and reminded them of my vivid dream. On this basis they changed their holiday destination, (and my Step Dad is a huge skeptic about this kind of stuff). Who knows if the dream was prophetic, a warning, or just a dream, but I like to think it was a warning sent for a reason, and that my actions changed the potential future and stopped anything awful happening to my Mum on their holiday.

Hi Mistyhorizon,

Your story gave me a chill!! I'm glad your mom and step dad listened to you. So many people dismiss these kinds of dreams. You may have saved their lives!

Thanks so much for sharing your experience.

I am glad they listened too amymarie, maybe nothing would have happened, but it just wasn't worth taking the chance.

I believe I had the out of body dream. It was much more vivid than any dream I have had before. It was while married I dreamed that I watched a bride and grooms car pull up to a hotel. However, when I looked in the car they were both dead. I seem to have dream to signafy when relationships are about to end.

I always dreamed about the outer space. Sometimes, in my dream I am floating in the outer space. Sometimes I'm on earth and I always see shooting stars. I always dream about disasters. Just last night I dreamed about a huge earthquake and. Giants are coming out of the ground. It was so scary! Sometimes I dream that the earth was hit by a commet and many people died. I also experience psychic a lot. Like for example, when a dream of a friend, I will see them the next day or something will happen to them. Sometimes in my dream I can find the things that I've misplaced in real life, then when I wake up I can find it. What could it mean?

Wow! It just means you are highly psychic! Your dreams of outer space and the like sound like out of body experiences. You have a gift.

Most of the useful information that I'm granted access to comes in the form of dreams. I've shared dreams with my sister who is also a Medium and we've waken up at the same time to call each other and figure out we were dreaming about our mother who passed away seven years ago. I also dreamt of my father's death at the same time it was happening, and didn't hear the news until the following afternoon. I truly believe that everyone should keep a dream journal. It's the best way to go back and make sense of all those strange images and symbols that come to us while we're unconscious.

Amymarie, you've got a jewel here. This is a very informative and well written hub. Congrats!

Thank you so much for that compliment Klarawieck! I truly appreciate it. That it really amazing about you and your sister. My mother and I once had a similar dream one night about my cousin who passed away last year. I think he was trying to reassure us and having the dream at the same time was enough to convince me.

Thanks again for dropping by! :)

I have this recurring dream sometimes, but it's never quite the same. I'm in the ocean and I am some kind of animal. Leaping in and out of the water like a dolphin, but I think I'm larger. Every time I leap out of the water I feel amazing and bubbly, but after awhile anytime I go back into the water I wonder if I shouldn't be more concerned about predators. It always starts out with my thinking it is a dream and slowly I realize it's not. That's when I start to worry about actually being under water and I try to fight my shape because I start to feel like I am being carried away by my new body. But it feels so real! I feel the water sliding by, I feel weightless when I am in the air. I feel heavier but sleek. The sensations are so vivid, one time when I woke up I even panicked because there was no water and I forgot where I was!

Lol, not sure what to consider that dream.

I did have a dream once that my dog Ladybug was covered in maggots, and I called my dad crying. He looked for her while I was on the phone, they ended up finding her outside in the road. She had been hit by a car, she's fine now though :) I guess I would consider that a phsycic dream. I told my friend about that dream and she said I probably heard Ladybug yelp in my sleep. And I would think that a perfectly logical explanation if I hadn't been 35 miles from home at the time.

Hi Kris Nick09,

That first dream is really interesting. I wonder if you are remembering something from a past life. Or in between lives. I don't know if you believe in that or not, but that is what it sounds like.

As for the other dream, I have to tell you I am so happy that your dog is okay. It sounds like you have a lot of natural psychic abilities. You should sharpen them by meditating. Do you do that already? I have an article about enhancing intuition. It might help you.

Thanks for sharing your experiences! Take care!

I have been having these recurring, very detailed dreams for the past couple of years. Throughout my day I am constantly getting deja vu of the same emotions I experience in them. I have been trying to figure out exactly what kind of dreams they are. Your information here has been helpful for me, thanks for sharing!

I'm at a hotel last night. This morning I am julted out of my sleep by a young girl screaming someone help me then a hotel door shuts. I wake up my fiancé and he asked me if I'm sure I wasn't dreaming. I wasn't dreaming of anything. It sounded to come from the room right next to me. I get up and walk outside, the lights are off. I do call the front desk and they tell me they will check on it.

I go back to sleep, I have this dream I am lying on the bed with my son with my head propped up on his stomach and were watching tv. My young daughter walks in upset and then a strange man with a gun. He looks dead at my son and then ludges over me at my little boy. I'm steaming the whole time what are you doing to my baby. Trying to fight him off of me, I can't see what he's doing.

The thing I can't get out of my mind is I saw his face so clearly and could decribe his features. He was also wearing a read baseball cap, white Hanes tshirt and red pants with a lighter shade of red on the inner leg. His eyes were round, squarish oval shaped face, small bags under the eyes and around tip nose. I have never seen anyone's face in my dreams, I just always knew who they were.

I had a dream of me standing in my ex boyfriends driveway talking to his girlfriend of that time and telling her he was cheating on her and she said were already split up and was moving out anyway but thanks. She has dark hair and her friends were picking her up. After she left my ex came out tryin to get me back and I said I don't think so and left too. I told my ex boyfriend about the dream. Two weeks later they had split up but my ex was trying to get me back and I found out who the girl was and where she lived to go talk to her. I found out he was begging for her back at the same time so I let her know he was asking me back too. She asked if I could bring her to get her stuff while he was at work so I did. After we were standing in the driveway and I was telling her about him cheating on her and then her two friends in a van got their to pick her up. When I was leaving I remembered my dream and she did have dark hair.

So now it's got me wondering what I should do about this dream and why out of all my dreams all my life I have never seen anyone's face in my dream and with this one my dream froze for a sec for me to focus in on his face and make eye contact.

A common theme amongst friends of mine when dreaming of someone close to them that has died is that of the loved one telling them that they hadn't really died and it was a hoax or all a joke. These dreams have all felt very real and non-distorted in the sense of home, setting etc. This has happened to 4 friends of mine, usually within a year of their loved one passing. I believe that loved ones do visit us when we are travelling in our dreams. I believe my friends were actually visited by their loved one, maybe to comfort them or to assure them they are ok, especially if the last time they saw them, the deceased person was not in a good state bodily/ facially for whatever reason. I truly believe that the reason for the 'hoax' element is to make us think when we wake up that, although it felt so real, it hasn't really happened. I don't think we are meant to know if we are able to visit and communicate with our loved ones and in what form we can communicate or make contact. I think that true knowledge of this is only granted to us when we ourselves die. My brother, an avid non-believer was visited by my grandmother during the night the day before her funeral. Had he not been able to prove he was awake, he would of believed he was dreaming and the same with happened with my best friend - her mother visited her in the night 4 months after her untimely departure. But for my friends glass of water being half full after recalling she'd drank the whole glass before going to sleep this proving she'd been into the kitchen where her other appeared to her, she too would of swore it was a dream as it seemed very trance like and although she knows they talked, she couldn't remember what about...she find feel stronger though from that point on. I have vivid dreams about my grandparents and they and the rooms in their homes are exactly as they were when they were alive. My great gran died durn I was 13 years old. I was devastated as we were very close indeed and only a year ago, I dreamt I called her on her landline and held a long conversation with her about how long I had not seen her for - when I woke up, I wrote the number down I remembered calling her on as it was still clear in my mind. I made some enquiries and looked through some of my mums kept memorabilia that belonged to my grandmothers including an. Address and birthday book that belonged to my grandmother and inside, she had written her home phone number in the personal details section....it was the number I recalled from the dream! Maybe it was in-bedded, I don't know but if so, I wouldn't think I'd need to check it! I am 40 now, it's been 27 years yet the detail in the dream was so utterly up uncanny and I felt like I'd seen her for real, spoken to her on the phone and been to her home....telecommunication is often how psychics have likened communication with a spirit to. I don't confess to be psychic but there has to be something in seeing our dead lived ones so vividly surely?

After months of dreams that came true in a month, I read everything I could find about it. Nostrodamos, Bernadette of Lourdes, Jean Dixon, Father Malaky (sp?) and Edgar Casey.

Casey, a pharmacist, became known world wide for his diagnoses and cures. He would eat his heavy afternoon meal and in his sleep travel to pre-arranged appointments with doctors and their patients. His knowledge came from the past and his treatment for burn patients became the norm. A 5year old girl burned over 95% of her body healed without a scar. I believe what we call nightmares after a heavy meal, are astral travel.

Hi Joyce,

Thanks for commenting. I went through a period where all my dreams were coming true. It was little things, conversations, finding something or running into someone. It was weird and I thought I was going crazy. Perhaps we are just a little more sensitive at times. Interesting theory about astral travel! What is it about heavy meals that cause astral travel?

I have visitation dreams with my grandfather from my father's side. the problem is that except one dream, all the rest were terrifying. He would always look dark and try to reach me telling me he will take me. He literally makes me cry in real life this is how scary the dream is. Do you have any idea what could it mean? My sister told me he always looks dark in her dreams too.

amymarie_5 profile image

amymarie_5 16 months ago from Chicago IL Author

Hi Florypaula,

Visitation dreams are rare and should always be comforting. The dreams that you have which are terrifying you are not visitations. You may have some unresolved guilt or fear. When I lost my dad, I had one dream where he was waiting for me near a cliff and a beautiful ocean. He hugged me tightly and told me to go home and let go. He was finally at peace. The other dreams I had were similar to yours. I was guilt ridden for years but didn't acknowledge it. When I finally acknowledged my feelings and allowed myself to let go of my guilt, the nightmares went away. It took years for that to happen.

I'm really sorry you are having these disturbing dreams, I'm not completely sure why you are experiencing these dreams but it could very well be the reason I had them. Please rest assured knowing those recurring dreams are not visitations. I hope my words give you a bit of comfort. Thank you for dropping by and best wishes to you.

Thank you for answering me. I am trying to think of any guilt I might have in regards to him but I can't find any right now. Maybe in time I will. He was an alcoholic who was always fighting with my grandmother, but even if I would always take her side and made him stop, he never hated me, quite the opposite actually.

I don't know what this might mean, but I am glad it is not a visitation dream. In the last one I had he was trying to grab my foot as I was running, kicking, crying and screaming to leave me alone as he previously was telling me that it was time and I am the only one who can bring him back to life and that I should go to his grave to do this, but I refused saying that he is dead and he should stay this way because this is the course of life.

Crazy.

Thank you again for your answer.

Could be that you might be remembering how he treated your grandmother? Not sure, I wouldn't call myself an expert but maybe there was another side to him that you are just remembering while you dream? I really appreciate you sharing this. I think you will figure it out. Please feel free to come back and let me know if you do and if the dreams stop.
