Concrete Minds

On Rigid and Entrenched Viewpoints

I am more and more disappointed by the reaction of the “concrete minds” in Hubpages Forums, who are lightening-quick to ridicule anyone and anything which does not fit firmly within their own already solidly established, Cartesian view of the world.

Soon, they will have banished every independent thinker into the distant beyond, and all they will have left will be those who think exactly like them. Then they can all pat each other on the back as they stroll into the Totalitarian Society which they will have helped to create, where different viewpoints and dissent are not tolerated. They should feel quite at home.

To the concrete mind, anything that we cannot understand or explain, cannot exist and cannot be true, and scientific proof is the only accepted measure of the validity of anything. To them, nothing can exist or be true unless it can be experienced with the five senses

Does the human aura exist? Can you see it, touch it, smell, taste or hear it? No. Then it can’t exist they say, and anyone who says that it does is a loony wingnut bozo, and merits the derision that they so readily and comprehensively hurl at him. Except that, with the advent of Kirlean photography, the human aura can be photographed. So now, after years of denial and derision, the concrete minds are forced, kicking and screaming, to accept that in fact something which they and science denied for years, really does exist - and always has.

Do human chakras exist? Can you see them, touch them, smell them, taste or hear them? No, then to the concrete mind, they can’t possibly exist either. But we know, that it takes more than food and water to keep a person alive. Ever tried putting food into a dead body? So what is this mysterious force that keeps the body alive, and how is it distributed through the body? Some call it Chi, or prana, it has been known about for thousands of years, long before the advent of modern science, and is made use of in many martial arts (Tai-chi, for example), and spiritual practices. Removing blockages to the flow of this energy throughout the human body can promote healing.

Is it possible for a human being to live without food? Guffaw, guffaw, guffaw, of course not, say the concrete minds. It’s impossible and only a loony wingnut would ever give credence to such a thing. But there have been many accounts of people living without food for prolonged periods of time. Books have been written giving instructions on how to go about it; how to prepare the body, step by step. There is even a man in India right now who has not ate or drank for several years. As I write this, teams of scientists are busy devising rigorous tests and observations to disprove his inexplicable (and therefore to their eyes false) ability.

Does intuition exist? Does love exist? Can science prove either of these? Can you see, hear, smell, taste, or touch them? No, then they obviously don’t exist either.

It's Better To Keep An Open Mind

The truth probably, is that the reality that we experience with our conscious mind and our five senses is only a fraction of what is actually “there” to be experienced. It is known that we only use a small percentage of our brain capacity, and that most people only use a fraction of their DNA. The rest, because its use cannot be explained, has been labelled as “junk DNA” by our omniscient scientists.

Are there intelligent life forms on other planets? Do UFO’s and ET’s really exist? The concrete mind has a ready made, knee jerk negative response to both these questions. But, an open, inquiring mind would perhaps ask the question: How can it be possible that there is NOT intelligent life on any one of the billions of other planets in the Universe, and how can UFO’s not exist when countless thousands of independent witnesses testify that they have seen them, and that they have had encounters with the Extra-terrestrials that fly in them. What if beings exist outside of the frequency range that our five senses can perceive? What if they can manipulate energy and frequency ranges so as to “appear” and “disappear” at will.

And again, the concrete minds dismiss space travel across the Universe as impossible, given the distances involved. But it is only impossible if you seal your mind off from other possibilities, which perhaps we cannot yet understand. For example, what if time is not linear? What if the past, present and future all exist at the same moment? What if time was in fact a spiral, and with the right knowledge and technology, it was possible to literally “jump” to any point in time and space? Then time and distance become irrelevant.

It is ill-conceived arrogance to say that nothing is real unless science can validate it. Accepted, set-in-concrete scientific “facts” have been later proved to be wrong or invalid time and time again throughout our history, yet the concrete minds still cling to science as the only means of establishing anything as real.

Simply because something cannot be explained or understood does not make it a lie, or an impossibility. We simply do not understand it yet, that is all. We should keep an open mind and allow the possibility for things to exists, in spite of our inability to understand or explain them.

We should, after all, be growing, learning, evolving, expanding our awareness and consciousness, but the concrete mind has a hard job with this. They already have their work cut out examining and re-examining in minute detail over and over again, what is already known.

You see, as a wise man once said, a mind, once expanded by a new idea, can never regain its original shape. This must be a frightening concept to the concrete mind, because as we all know, if you try to expand concrete, it breaks.

Concrete ... in the Sense of Physically Substantial ... Defines the Moribund State of any Awreness ... not the Infinite Human Mind !

Whether things do exist or don't exist ? It's the things that I know do exist that help me to live and be a better person...

whether chakras, ufos or prana energy do or don't exist is open to question, one day we might find out that they do. But will 'not knowing' or 'not needing to believe' in whether they exist or not, really matter in our lives...

without these things we can still get along, and for most of us we need food, air, water, a little bit of money and a roof over our heads to live a meaningful, commonsense way of life.

from an ex seeker, healer, believer, who dropped it all for common sense practicalities.

I just need to pay the rent : ) still a great hub though

Hi! sanyasin

Very nice article. Lots of new info also. I did not know about Kirlean photography. I totally agree with you. Studying deep sleep is another example which is not studied today in science that much simply because it does not fit into today's style of professional science. There are many such aspects.

I wrote the following in a comment where a person was upset due to similar behavior.

I have often seen that people who are famous scientists they understand and are polite (I am my self a professional Scientist, so I see them often). Statements of Socrates, or Einstein show what politeness means.

Professional Science today has set its own limits (it studies only those aspects which can be analyzed with logical arguments and experiments which can be repeated). They generally do not study aspects in which basic axioms are difficult to obtain from experiments which can be verified later on by repeating again.

An example is Einstein's theory - one assumes initially that nothing moves faster than light and whole model is based for objects which satisfy such conditions.

I do not see any big contradiction in spiritual aspects and Science (or rationalism) as long as you are clear about what you are doing. Both try to find truth in their own spheres with their methods. No rationalist (and in the same way no spiritualist) if he/she is confident will want to stop another person to stop studying or expressing his/her ideas.

Only those who do not understand these limitations, professional science has imposed on itself get carried away. Do not get hurt by their rude behavior. Is that not just effect of ignorance or lack of confidence -as usually all rudeness starts with?

Concrete arguments that concrete minds cannot grasp! Well written and well done.

Hi, I don't know about the concretes in the forum, but I totally agree with you about everything else. I recently had my aura read, admittedly it is not exactly like kirlian photography, but it is similar. and I agree about the universe maybe being in a spiral, and all time being one thing in one go. I love science but I also think that there is so much out there we do not know yet. nice one, rated up. nell

An interesting point of view. With respect, though, you ask two different questions one after the other and combine them. For example: It is highly improbable that there is no intelligent life on other planets. So on this point, I would agree with you. But you combine it with UFOs. I happened to watch on TV the result of a UFO recording by a professional TV crew. You could clearly see the shiny object flying across the sky and it looked like a spherical shiny steel or aluminium spacecraft, flying too low to be a conventional aircraft. I could have sworn that I was watching a flying saucer. To cut the long story short, the UFO turned out to be an eagle. So two different stories and both of them highly improbable for the opposite reasons: It is highly improbable that there is no intelligent life on some other planet, and it is highly improbable that there are UFOs, for the well known reasons. NEITHER IS IMPOSSIBLE THOUGH :-))

Very good article, I really agree with your ideas, but, knowing these types of persons, I know also that they are too proud of themselves to accept any other truth...it is a vicious circle!

I really wouldn't worry about one dimensional folks sanny, they're not worth the effort. You can't change ingrained dogma - and why would you want to? Your life will be the richer one, the more fulfilled and satisfying one. Leave them to their fixed, rigid opinions. Be well - and enjoy the gift that is an open mind ;)
