Creating Thought Forms: Do We Create Ghosts and Demons With Our Minds?

Do we create our own hauntings?

We have been fascinated and scared by ghosts for hundreds of years, and there are a few of us who ask the question, "what are ghosts and why are they here?" The general answer to these questions is usually something to the effect of ghosts being restless spirits who are trapped between this world and the next. Usually people believe that ghosts are stuck in this realm because they have some sort of unfinished business or died so tragically and suddenly that they do not even realize they are dead.

But sometimes these answers just are not enough to explain the curious and spine-tingling events that many of us have experienced with ghosts and demons. Perhaps there is a little more to ghosts than what we've been taught for so many years, or perhaps the concept is even more simple than we could have imagined. Is it possible that we create (will into being) our own ghosts and demons?

Every thought exists.

There are dozens of esoteric spiritual teachers (including Tibetan Buddhists) in the world today who believe and teach that we create our own realities. To expand on this idea, they say that every thought we have ever had exists. So if every thought exists or has existed in some real shape or form, couldn't it be possible that the just the mere idea of evil spirits or harmless hauntings in someone's mind actually willed that thought into existence?

Everything we know and see exists because someone had a thought to make it so. This is an obvious statement for most when they apply it to the physical realm. Architecture, technology, material things in general have all been created because of someone thinking of them in the first place. BUT, it is also possible and probable that our thoughts are energy and therefore turn into energy, and that energy has to go somewhere, right? Maybe that energy formed by thought can influence any number of things including the spiritual and/or supernatural. This is also the theory behind those who believe and perform magick. Magick is basically a thought that is turned into energy in which manifests the thinker's intentions. Isn't this the same thing we are doing when we have a goal that we eventually reach? We are making our thoughts reality.

The Tulpa

The Tulpa is a thought-form that has become reality, more or less. Many Buddhists believe that if someone thinks about something long enough, visualizes it, and believes that it will exist...they can actually make it exist. This can be seen in Alexandra David-Neel's story of her own Tulpa, a thought form of a monk that actually manifested into this dimension, according to her book and many eyewitnesses of this miracle.

They say at first that Tulpas are easy to control, but after they manifest and gain enough strength in this dimension that they can take control of themselves for themselves. They can actually become their own being, with their own thoughts and energy and therefore break themselves away from your thoughts, and inevitably, your control. This is exactly what happened to the writer Alexandra David Neel with her tulpa in the early twentieth century. The friendly image of a monk began to appear after Alexandra's many hours of concentration and visualization. But once it began manifesting itself more and more, it acquired a mind of its own. It would manifest on its own without her visualization, so much so that her friends and colleagues started asking her who the "stranger" was near their camp. She was able to re-absorb the thought-form into her own being, but it supposedly took her weeks in which to do and left her quite weakened.

There have been other experiences with Tulpas throughout history, and it makes me wonder if just the mere thought of ghosts or spirits doesn't actually put some sort of spirit or energy into existence in our dimension.

Ghosts & Spirits as Thought Forms

Instead of believing or thinking that ghosts are reality because they are trapped souls, let's imagine that indeed these spirits or hauntings of various kinds are actually products of our thoughts and beliefs.

What about poltergeist activity? Have you ever noticed that in stories of poltergeist activity that when someone notices paranormal things happening, the weird things usually get even weirder and more violent and tend to happen more often? If ghosts and the paranormal are bi-products of our own thought forms, if we dwell on the thought of a poltergeist we are merely feeding it with more energy by way of our thoughts.

In my own personal experience, when I obsess over the idea of ghosts and their existence this is the time when I usually begin to have paranormal activity occur in my house. When I am not focused on ghosts and the paranormal, my mind being on other things in life, then I literally have no paranormal activity in my house to make mention of. This only feeds into the belief that ghosts and hauntings are merely projections of our thoughts and beliefs. One example is that I blame mishaps around my house on a spirit I like to call "the man". Ironically whenever I blame something on "the man", something strange happens. One night I spilled my glass of wine all over the carpet, and I said "damn the man!" The electricity went out in the room where I was sitting (and nowhere else in the house). The other time I blamed a mishap on "the man", I was in the kitchen and the electricity cut out in the kitchen and nowhere else in the house. By me thinking this ghost of a man and giving him characteristics of mischief, I almost will him into least enough to play with the electrical currents in my house.

This same idea of thought forms could be applied to the paranormal occurrences of fairies in centuries past. So many people in Europe and all over the world believed in the existence of fairies, that actual sightings and run-ins with fairies was a normal affair. If an entire world of people believed that fairies existed, could their thoughts not have manifested these beings into reality? That also explains why there's not so many sightings of fairies in this day and is because not many people believe in them. Think about the line in Peter Pan by JM Barrie, "if you believe in fairies, clap your hands." This is literally taking a belief and applying direct physical energy to it. And how powerful would this be if the entire world did it together?

How about demons and the devil? Could these evil spirits also be mere thought forms that have manifested into reality because of so many people believing in such things? There are millions of Christians in the United States today who believe in evil spirits such as demons that can influence our thoughts and behaviors, even possess us if we allow them to. Did these demons actually exist before the thought of them was put into motion? I do not believe so, but they could very well be real third-dimensional beings now that so many people have put so much concentration and focus on them. This concentration, visualization, and even fear has probably fueled the hellfire, so to speak. And if these negative thoughts and fears have manifested into reality, these negative thought forms or spirits most likely feed on more negative thoughts and they go towards the people who are lost in fear and consumed by negative thought patterns...hence we have the concept of demonic possessions.

Do I believe in the devil as the Christians do? No, I do not; however, once again I can say that I am beginning to believe in the ability of thought forms. If millions of people are thinking of this evil entity as a reality, putting a name to it, giving it characteristics, writing about it, fearing it, and ultimately seeing it as a real being...perhaps they have created Satan on their own accord.

Perhaps we all have the ability to project thought forms into reality. Maybe we should be careful with what we are thinking...maybe we should be careful with what energetic vibrations we are willing into existence.

Savvy - Absolutely. I'm not saying it doesn't exist, I'm just saying I don't know that I see it in the same way others do. But I might change my mind on that in the future, who knows. Thanks so much for reading! I enjoyed our conversation.

I hear what you're saying. For sure, this darkness does make the light more obvious. I am convinced of evil, but that's me. The author, who is a psychic and also heavily involved in Esoteric matters, did not believe in evil either, until it invaded her life. She has a lot of information about the use of crystals, which you may find interesting. Her approach is very no-nonsense, which I like. Anyway, she has a great deal of respect for all of of creation, which she refers to as the All-Life. Thanks for listening.

I enjoyed reading your hub. - Savvy

Very interesting and informative statements. I don't consider myself any one label, as I am just a spiritual being having a human experience. But yes, I would say that I am definitely involved in Esoteric subjects and belief is just a part of me...through and through. Although I believe there is both light and dark in the world and in the universe, I am not convinced of this thing we call "evil"...I am only convinced of an absence of absence of love. But I think everything in this universe and world has its purpose...and everything exists for balance. If there was no dark, we wouldn't know the light. If there was no "evil", we wouldn't truly know "good". And so forth.

Hi kitty-the-dreamer,

Personally, I think the important thing to know (in my opinion) is that evil does exist, and that we can ignore it, but not until we realize it is a present energy that is active in the universe, or at least on earth. I tend to think of it as something that feeds off of our negativity and fear. But, I also feel that it is not a thought form, per se, that perhaps it was originally created as such, but that it's strength is now pervasive, and that it is a separate entity from humans. The reason I say this is because evil has no soul. Thus, it is not a true part of Creation, which contains energy naturally, even rocks and trees. Evil has no part of that original creation which contained spirit and soul. Rather it is that which steals from people who then give the evil parts of their energy, (sometimes unknowingly) thus allowing it to remain active with the stolen energy. Many people have been affected by evil who did not even know that it existed, like children for example.

My favorite book on this subject is: Shouting at the Wolf, by Anderson Reed. I own the book. I would like to mention that I disagreed with most of the reviews I read on Amazon. For example, one person said there were multiple grammatical errors in the book. I did not see any. Her writing is highly intelligent, but without that annoying sense of supreme self and arrogance that some New Agers have. (I'm sorry to say) That is not to say, I am putting all New Agers in the same boat. I am interested in metaphysical matters too. You too are interested in esoteric matters (which is not necessarily the same as New Age) and you also project kindness and balance. Anyway, long story short, the author states that once we delve into the metaphysical or esoteric arts, darkness and light spill out together - always. Thus, as you know, methods of protection are not just valuable, but necessary. Having said all that, if humans were unwilling to give evil the time of day, while still realizing it's reality, then evil would eventually be made weak. But I don't see that happening anytime soon, as we are so easily fooled by it's lies and trickery. In that sense, I very much credit the Bible, which says, the "devil" is a thief, a liar, and a murderer. How true.

wow, fascinating... your hub it's really good, don't we all ask the same question, if its just part of our mind, or if it's real and it's all around us. i feel it's true because the same way there is a god, there are demons among us..

Laura - Stigmata as a generation of concentration and energy is a great point, as well. Thank you for adding that to the mix. We really could attribute many supernatural occurrences to thought forms couldn't we? Thank you for reading and keeping an open mind. :) Blessings.

FIS - VERY interesting and very good point to bring up here. I agree, and I think that many Pagans these days view deities in their many different forms as a way of understanding divinity. Thanks for the comment!

kittythedreamer-I really found this hub interesting. I believe that thoughts produce energy-energy then produces action of some sort thus generating energy...Stigmata could possibly fall under this ideology as well as reports of poltergeist activities being seen while household members are going through adolescence. I don't know personally, nor do I engage in paranormal versus normal/possible scientific debates. You covered all four corners really well in your hub and as I said earlier I really found it interesting and thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

I would also suggest the idea of thought forms as gods... or even God. That doesn't mean that I don't believe in gods, or God... but... when we think we are dealing with gods, or God, we may be really dealing with thought forms and deluding ourselves into thinking that they are more than that... not just thought forms that we create ourselves, but thought forms built up for centuries, millennia by thousands.. millions of people before us.

Of course.. dealing with a thought form of deity may be the only way to commune with deity. If deity(s) are so far beyond us that we just can't get them... using thought forms as a way to commune may be the only way... of course... those communions will be colored by inaccuracy in our personal imagination.

Magical Theurgy is filled with techniques for taking on God Forms as a way of communing with Gods... or.. becoming more like them.

rcrumple - I believe that it could be both, actually. That the spirit manifests from someone's thoughts maybe not even necessarily our own, but then if there is negative vibrations emanating from someone that spirit could very well be feeding off of that energy to manifest even stronger. This would be a classic example of poltergeist activity! Thanks for the comment, as always.

Kitty -

Another great hub. I'm somewhat divided here. From my own experiences, there were never desires or thoughts of manifestation, yet, there were things occurring. In an experience I had in a hotel room, 3 nights running, the act never grew any differently, but my awareness did. (I did notice a personality change within myself, some of which may have been self inflicted, but other definitely not.) Perhaps, it's not that the spirit is being manifested by our thoughts as much as enjoying the attention it's getting from them. Just a thought!

Again, fantastic as always!

DzyMsLizzy - My thoughts to that note are that they don't have to be "conjured" up. I am not even sure that intense thought processes are my belief is that all thoughts exist. These ghosts and spirits could also be leftover thoughts of the actual people who they mimic. These spirits and ghosts could also be thought forms of someone who lived on the land previous to you that has stuck around...or someone close to you...or maybe just someone far off that had the thought and BAM these spirits manifested somewhere. Thanks for the comment, your husband sounds as if he is clairvoyant and clairsentient.

Fascinating piece. The paranormal is of great interest to me. In fact, we have a few spirits around our property.

Now, in order for something to be "willed into existence" by our own thoughts, requires intense concentration to that end. When we moved here, we were far too busy dealing with the move, settling in, building our shop, and getting our business back up and running. This took a couple of years, and we did not have the time or energy to be sitting around conjuring. We were not even thinking about the paranormal, even at the edges of our awareness.

Nonetheless, after about 3 years, we began to notice odd things happening, and now ant then see a brief manifestation. There are only my husband and I, and our cats, so no one is here to play tricks on us. The street is not very busy, (except at school pick up/drop off times..and that is not at night.

Further, our cats notice when the spirit is around--and cats do not indulge in thought conjuring. We know when this is happening, as they will all stop what they are doing and stare down the hall--where there is no possibility for stray light reflections.

My husband is a sensititive, and is very aware of these entities. A few times, one of them (he has felt it to be a girl of about 10 - 12) has gone RIGHT THROUGH HIM!! He describes this as an awful feeling. Not painful, but very weird and uncomfortable. The last time it happened, he yelled at her, "DON'T DO THAT!" All activity ceased for almost a year. She is back, though, and has respected his wishes and doesn't go through him anymore. She does, however, do mischief.

Since these incidents, we have become very intersted in studying about these phenomena, and read/watch all we can. Some of the TV shows are possibly "real" but also too focused on ratings and 'spooky effects.' This is harmful to serious students of the paranormal, for it plays into the Hollywood fiction mentality.

Loved your article--voted up, awesome, and interesting.

cryptid - I'm starting to believe it's somewhere in the middle and that we definitely create our own realities...that thought forms equal energy and energy can manifest in many ways. Thanks!

Your Hub covers an idea I've spent a lot of time thinking about myself. There is no doubt paranormal activity exists, but the question is what accounts for it. More practical-minded folks write it off to tricks of light or imagination, and believers of course will say ghosts demons and all kinds of other spooky guys are real. Maybe the truth is somewhere in the middle, and our minds are more powerful than we realize.

Interesting Hub, as usual!
