Did You Know There is Nothing New Under the Sun?

It is quite true! There is nothing new under the sun according to the Word of God.

“What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; There is nothing new under the sun! Is there anything of which one can say, “Look! This is something new? It was here already, long ago; it was here before our time.” Ecclesiastes 1.

Solomon is recorded as a brilliant man of great spiritual wisdom who became King of Israel! He also built the first grandest majestic Temple that was ever constructed to worship the Lord in. It was built in Jerusalem on Mt. Moriah using the finest quality furnishings and materials. Solomon had everything that anyone could ever want or ever imagine and more! He denied himself nothing and indulged himself in a host of pleasures. He had wealth, riches, honor, prestige, power, affluent status as well as God’s favor. He is recorded in the Word to be the richest man that ever lived; or will live! What more could one possibly ask for? Yet he discovered that it was all meaningless especially when you are not right with God!

It is in the latter days of his life when he recorded the practical wisdom that we find in Ecclesiastes! One might find it a bit disconcerting, pessimistic and or negative because it exudes such an abrasive uncompromising Truth! Solomon wants to get our attention as he shouts to us vociferously that life without God is futile! In actuality he is not trying to discourage us but to get us back on track! To point us to the straight and Narrow Path that leads to the Lord! He ardently and passionately encourages us to first seek happiness in the Lord rather than people, places or things!

Disillusionment, despair, disappointment and chaos are the foreboding ominous consequences when we place anything above God! Seeking God first will result with an invaluable, priceless, abiding tranquil inner peace that is only found in Him!

Whatever is going on about us is in this world is temporal. It will only last for but a few moments in the summation totality of time! Life in actuality is quite diminutively short on this side of heaven. What is of the utmost importance is where each of us will spend eternity! Time is of the essence, Solomon warns us to commit to our Creator now rather than later! Quintessentially there is nothing more important than time! The Scriptures record what has been and what will be! Everything that is happening now has happened before and will happen again... History continually repeats itself! At some point life as we know it will all come to an end. It is at that time we all will have to stand before God the Father our Creator.

We are living in some interesting times. Unexpected tragedy laden climatic weather conditions, a profuse abundance of heinous crimes being committed daily throughout the world as well as foreign and domestic terrorism steadily on the rise. Racial discrimination once again taking the forefront. Who would have ever imagined that a young boy (he is not really a man) would walk into Bible Study as a visitor, sit in on it for an hour and then get up and begin shooting. Nine were wounded and eight of them died! LORD HELP US! No wonder Diseases, sickness and famines of all sorts abound worldwide! Our United States of America's government was even forced to "SHUT DOWN" after President Obama and Congress reached a major impasse and were unable to come to an agreement! LORD HELP US! Morality has been pushed aside and relationships of all sorts have begin to emerge. The insidious attempt to compare the right to same sex relationships with Holy Matrimony should not be! Marriage is sacred and ordained by GOD. "Same sex unions" are a man made choice. The Supreme Court has even voted against the WORD of GOD in favor of "same sex unions." No doubt Liberal worldly principles are being embraced and encouraged! This is why Marriage between a man and a woman is no longer considered sacred by many. Marriage now has many alternative options... We have been here before! So Please don't blame GOD!

Notice how there is an undisclosed movement towards trying to establish a new normal! There is an unstated subtle attempt to desensitize us towards extinguishing traditional morality. One must only flip a switch and tune in to the television or their hand held hi-tech gadget of choice momentarily to see what’s happening! Throughout the Word of God we can see how devastated the people as well as the land became due to immorality and disobedience. A proliferation of food shortages and famines began to abound! A once productive and fruitful land region abruptly interrupted by drought resulting in scarcity, starvation and barrenness! Life becomes futile and desolate when we ignore God’s principles time after time. LORD HELP US!

God has always had a solution for past, present and future problems. There is always hope in the Lord! Each day is a precious "GIFT" from the Lord! Absolutely NO one but GOD can make a day! There is no greater power, principality or authority, nor will there ever be. God is infinitely Supreme! There is no higher authority than HE! He is Omniscient, Omnipotent & Omnipresent! He is KING of kings and LORD of lords! HE is the Great I AM! The world gives us many options that lead us away from the Lord’s principles. There is a plethora of philosophies, beliefs, religions and endless opinions and varied lifestyles… We can learn much from God’s Word. God does not change His principles to accommodate our ever changing society. Solomon is a prime example. He provides us with a wealth of wise sage antidotes for life and living in Ecclesiastes.

We are to enjoy life but not ignore, disrespect or disregard the Lord. He is the Giver and Sustain-er of life. Life will spring forth a varied abundance of ups and downs. When we hold fast to our faith as we go through the Lord perfects us in His image. He molds our character and causes the Fruit of His Spirit to multiply within us and bring us to perfection. The perfection we attain in the Lord is spiritual. It does not ever imply that we become flawless. It means that we learn and continuously aspire to become complete in Him. We Trust Him more and begin to sin less! This is why we all need Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord! He graces us with His precious Comforter the Holy Teacher that resides within us!

Things come and go! Seasons change... It is how we respond and relate to whomever or whatever we encounter in life that matters most! It is what determines our character... God has created each of us for a purpose! Life is about discovering that purpose. Human effort apart from God is senseless and futile! Without the breath from God’s Spirit we ALL are nothing more than mere decaying dust living in vain. We should reverently respect God and honor His principles for life and living! He is the Potter and we are the clay, with Him we can do or conquer the impossible. Pray for spiritual discernment! Take time out to spend some time with the Lord each day! We all benefit when we seek God above all else! Now is the time to do just that!

In this 21st century there is still nothing new! If you are searching for some answers camp in Ecclesiastes for a while! Here you will find some stern wise warnings! Wisdom often goes unheeded. In Ecclesiastes we can learn about life! Absolutely nothing is hidden from the Lord anywhere in this entire universe! Let us commence to welcome and receive the precious gift of spiritual wisdom from the Lord! Pray daily for increased spiritual discernment. The wisdom from above is pure and yields peace. It is precious and incalculable. “The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded than the shouts of a ruler of fools. Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner destroys much good.” Ecclesiastes 9. Open our spiritual eyes Lord!

“The conclusion of the matter!”

“Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter; fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, included the hidden thing, whether it is GOOD or evil.” Ecclesiastes 12.

Interesting. Thanks for bringing up a verse of the bible that I have been looking for for a while now. There is NOTHING NEW under the SON. Why worry about things that are inevitably going to happen again.

My only error is that we are gods and we do the creating and God allows us to make mistakes, but there are no real mistakes. We are to learn the consequences of our thoughts and actions and to allow for this to happen there has to be some form of Free Will to allows us to learn. Without any of that and what we think then we just would not be here on the planet. So love one another as thyself and be very careful with your thoughts and always expect things to come back to you as you have given them out to others. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you is something that is so misunderstood. No, everything has happened before but it is all new to us at this point in time.

Rated up, interesting and awesome.

I had a pastor friend tell me that he hated it when he had to read anything in Ecclesiastes because it depressed him so. I was amazed because he seemed so strong in the word. So I tried to tell him that it was the context in which he read it. You cannot read Ecclesiastes without coming to a few conclusions.

First we are temporal creatures. We are not living in a world in which we are to stay long. And of the time we spend here is the humdrum day-to-day things we must do to stay alive. These things are not eternal but also are temporary. The money that we work so hard for, that will be left to others, the lands and abilities we boast of will be of no use to us in eternity (especially if the eternity is not with Christ).

Secondly, what we will be left with of this world is our soul, the Word of God, and our Testimony that gives us riches in Glory. In this life animals can live longer than we, so we need to do the work of God in every moment we can. We are to appreciate all that our hand finds to do, with an emphasis on the service to the King of kings.

Thirdly, we are given the voice of a superstar in today's terms. He knew what he was talking about and we are urged to take the advice of someone who made all the wrong choices. He heaped to himself riches to fill lusts of this temporal world. What this man has no person alive is his equal. He had more women to please him than any one man could ever hope to please. He worked his blessings into cursings, for those very things began to rob him of the time he had to build treasures in heaven. He had wasted his life trying to prove what he believed to be true, that living "life to the fullest" in the fleshly sense would be worth it. When he finally woke up, his life was about over and he had no way to get back his vibrant youth to do what he should have done with the blessings God gave him. So he did the only thing he could do, what we see here, tell his children and generations to come of the mess he had made of this life (a live most today would envy and want for themselves).

This should be one of my pastor friend's favorite passages because it is so applicable today. Everyone wants to be rich and have an extravagant lifestyle. Everyone wants to be the master of his own fate and make all others gasp in amazement when their name is mentioned. Well take it from someone that knows, and let it give us fair warning: WE ARE ALIVE BUT A MOMENT_ BE CAREFUL HOW YOU SPEND THAT MOMENT!!!

These are the words of my dear mother. Growing up we as children would be shocked at the behavior of people. My mother wasn't though - she had seen it all before.

This is such a nice way to wake up this morning - to read your hub. Thanks so much!

Nobody, I think that Solomon is often misunderstood. As King he could do as he pleased. No doubt he made a plethora of mistakes. He wrote this to help future generations circumvent from going astray from God’s commandments… But he also did a lot of good as well. No doubt the Lord thought much of him since he was allowed to build the first Temple that was magnificent. Note the lavish quality of the temple furnishings etc. Solomon is also known not only to be the richest man to ever live, but for also being the wisest man in the world. ( See II Chronicles 1.) He was brilliant. His transparency allows us to see the fallacy of allowing things to supersede our relationship with the Lord regardless of our station in life.

We live in a material world and everything that God made was GOOD! One can enjoy and experience material things without them being worshipped or idolized. Materialism is relative.. . Greediness, lust and covetousness can be found in the rich, poor or in between… Job a man of faith, patience and endurance was a wealthy man. The bible says he was perfect and upright. “Man looks on the outside but God looks at the heart,” Job was a just man, his friends were the problem… The Lord blessed the latter part of his life with even more… Esther an adopted girl, was a beautiful woman who became queen that saved her people. Abraham and Lot are another example they had so much that they had to separate. The Word of God tells us that the disciples lacked nothing Jesus provided their needs…

There are many misconceptions about God. What wise, loving, Father that owned everything would not want more for His children. God provided everything possible for Adam and Eve from the beginning, It was when they allowed the devil to seduce them away from God and what they knew to be right. Causing them to forfeit the bountiful provisions that God intended. The children of Israel wandered in the desert 4o years because of their disobedience… We must always be aware that there are temptations and entrapments of all kinds designed to pull us away from being focused and centered on God!

It is the Love of money that is the root of all evil” You can have no money and covet, or vise versa… We should not allow people, places or things cause us to wander away from the Lord… Continued Spiritual growth is a daily choice… Solomon teaches us here in his written sermon in Ecclesiastes that certain roads lead to emptiness. What is most important that we allow the Lord to write “ His laws within or hearts” We can learn much from this man that loved God and had everything especially to remember GOD our CREATOR NOW!

I hope you did not think I was condemning anything not spiritual with being a waste of time. I never meant to say that. We are to do all to God's glory. I was merely speaking in the mode of Ecclesiastes. You know the "works" Scripture, there is Gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, and stubble. The things that are combustible will be gone and what will be left is the treasures in heaven when all is said and done. Yes there are good things in this world and work with the enjoyment of work is one of them. I do not believe money is bad and in some people God allows much money but that is so His kingdom can be furthered and His Glory enhanced. I believe that Solomon was given such latitude in his behavior so all would see what can happen to the biggest and best. God did not hold anything back from him, including all those women. He knew what Solomon would feel about all of it when the end of his life came. He knew that Solomon would say that it was all emptiness, vanity. I think Solomon's worst mistake was the multiplying of wives to himself. It was in trying to please all of them that he began to erect temples to their Gods. Solomon was the wisest man that ever lived. None was wiser and yet he fell into such an unwise path. As unwise as I tend to be I have to watch myself ever closer than most.

Bk Creative, Your mother was a wise woman to pass these sage words of wisdom on to you! No doubt they made a great impact upon your life. You are so welcome!

We are truly living in some interesting times! I cannot imagine what I would do without the Lord and His Word... We can learn much from Solomon's wisdom he shares here! We must continually pray for discernment! Thank You Lord for Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit! It is always a pleasure. Thank you for stopping by to share! In HIS Love, Grace, Joy, Peace & Blessings!

Nobody, Thank You for sharing! Your comments help provoke thought and cause us to think on a deeper level. As you so wonderfully stated: “Yes there are good things in this world and work with the enjoyment of work is one of them. I do not believe money is bad and in some people God allows much money but that is so His kingdom can be furthered and His Glory enhanced.” Amen I so agree!

As long as we all are on this side of Heaven the Lord continues to mold and shape us when we are willing. God does not force His Will and Way upon us He allows us to choose… Spiritual growth is a continual process and we are “Forever becoming…” These are wise words of wisdom taught to me by my mother who loved the Lord! We can continue to learn from Solomon and the wisdom he candidly shared here in Ecclesiastes! May we always welcome and embrace the disciplines of the Lord! Thank you for your support my dear brother in the Lord! I have much respect for you and the transparency that you often share, In HIS Love, Grace, Joy, Peace and Blessings! God Bless You!

Enjoyed your summariztion of this book. Excellent commentary and insight! Even for those who know Him it is difficult sometimes to get out of the "this life" mentality when we ought to be more focused on the eternal view. Especially liked the conclusion.

When my husband first came to know the Lord and wanted to select a book of the Bible to read he selected Ecclesiastes. I did all I could to get him to pick something else considering the depressive life he came from. He insisted that this was the book he was going to read. He fell in love with the book and calls it his favorite because it so eloquently described the futility of the life he lived without God.

Tamarjo, Thank You for such gracious encouraging words! You are such an encourager! As you so marvelously stated: "We ought to be more focused on the eternal view!" Amen! Yes indeed! Life can present us with some very interesting challenges at times. They are distractions sent to rock us from being centered upon the Lord!

What an amazing impact you made upon your husband. Ecclesiastes no doubt is etched upon his soul. Your geninue concerns swayed him in the right direction; he read it anyway! Wonderful! It shows him a distinct contrast to where he has been and the difference truly having the Lord in his life can make. Life without the LORD is "meaningless." May our HEAVENLY FATHER continue to give you both HIS Joy for the journey!

As always thank you for stopping by to share. In HIS Love, Grace, Mercy, Joy, Peace & Blessings God Bless You!

Thank you. This is so thought provoking. Indeed there is nothing new under the sun and you hi-lighted a few things that came to my mind when I read the title.

The world has changed so much, to the point where if people are not strong Christians they would feel foolish, but you have noted and reminded everyone again at the end of the Hub to FEAR GOD . (To honour Him) and keep His Commandments.

It's good you wrote this. There are certain Christian articles that I would like to write but, I feel people will be very offended - this bothers me a bit and I pray God gives me wisdom to get round it because they are touchy subjects and as you know "The Truth is bitter".

Love you.

LadyE, You are so welcome! Thank You for sharing. Your comments provoke much thought! It is important that we always keep in mind that regardless how the world changes; God remains the same.

It can seem as though His principles are outdated but His Word is timeless! God has made time for us. What is so beautiful, we have as much time as we need to fulfill whatever purpose He has created us for.

This is why we must spend time with our Father God regularly. Understanding comes from God! He can open our spiritual eyes and ears so we can better discern what His will is for our life. Keeping in mind that the Lord wants us to enjoy life. We are in the continuing process of becoming... In Him we can find JOY for the journey.

It is true people will be offended, misunderstand and not say kind things about us when we take a stand. Even try to at times entrap us... They will even attempt try to undermind our character and integrity. However ultimately our first purpose is to Please the LORD! This is a journey of continual spiritual growth... Yes as you well stated "The TRUTH is bitter." Allow the Lord to lead you. God knows or hearts! What He knows is what matters most!

May our Heavenly Father continue to grow you in His Grace, Wisdom & Knowledge. I am so very proud of you! I know the Lord has so much more in store for you... Love You!

In HIS Love, Grace, Joy, Peace & Blessings! God Bless You!

Deborrah, My sweet and precious sister blessings to you and yours. This is a beautiful and wonderful writing. I do pray many are led to read and touched by the words breathed on the pages. Life on planet earth is but a mist to eternity. The world is always seeking for something new to sustain them. Jesus is the only one that sustains us and gives us life and life eternal and power. It is only through him that we will have true peace. No money or thing will fill or complete us.

I love what you wrote here sister. Things come and go! Seasons change... It is how we respond and relate to whomever or whatever we encounter in life that matters most! It is what determines our character... God has created each of us for a purpose! Life is about discovering that purpose. Human effort apart from God is futile! Without the breath from God’s Spirit we are nothing more than mere decaying dust living in vain.

I pray that all is well with you and yours sister. I am honored always, to come in and read what is shining on your pages. Gods light shines in you and He has so blessed us with your presence on these pages. I love you girl. In Christ be the Glory. Skye

Greetings dear DeBorrah and all the Children of the Most High God!

Inspired! The sentiments of this message moved me. I'd shared this thought with someone else. No matter what is going on today, next year it will be done. Whether good, bad, or indifferent, this too shall pass!

We must remember to hold to HIS hand! -- God's unchanging Hand! Build our HOPES on things eternal. Hold to God's unchanging Hand! The author of this hymn reminds us that LIFE is FILLEd with swift transitions...but who we turn to is the most important end.

He will never leave us nor forsake us. Therefore, let the peace of God rule our hearts and minds!

Wonderful! My dear Sister! Thank you for allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to us through these inspired words!

Let's not forget the visitation of Angels that communicated messages from above without a cell tower or rockets!

No doubt that Solomon had a vast empire! It was his spiritual wisdom from the Lord that was most impressive! Yes I daily Thank & Praise God for the Wisdom in His Word and His precious Holy Spirit!
