Do u know MAHATMA GANDHI? Is Gandhism relevant today?

Relevance of the Mahatma

A lean old man with a stick in his hand and a cloth drapped around him, won India its freedom -- freedom from bondage, slavery, imperialism. Britain ruled India for a long time unless Gandhi emerged on the scene to bring the country under its own rule. It is not that India did not have freedom fighters. In fact, the contribution of those numerable and innumerable freedom fighters who laid their lives for winning India freedom cannot be ignored. Yet, the brightest jewel of all will remain MAHATMA GANDHI.

Gandhi is such an icon for the youth that showed the spirit of glory and way to freedom to the Indians. Gandhi was a light for the people in dark. he came back to India in his full attire after winning the rights for different races in South Africa. But the sight of poverty and depravity made his heart to bleed and he relinquished his attire and wore a dhoti that was to be his only attire therefater.

He saw his countrymen struggling against the brutal British regime. He took it to himself to fight for their rights and make them struggle for attaining independence from the savage regime. It was not a cakewalk. But, a determined person as GANDHI never let the spirit of gaining independece for his country die. His speeches encouraged people, both literates and illiterates. He won the freedom for his country with his intellect and never die spirit, which lit the fire to struggle in the Indians. And his weapons were so unique -- satyagrah in his own terms. He did not possess nukes or atom bombs or AK-47 or 56 rifles, he didnt even have a schoolboy's gun, what all he had as his exemplary weapon was his patience and non-violence. He taught us patience, love for all, politeness, sacrifice, non-violence, committment, and today's world teaches hatred, illwill, violence, impatience, and hunger for power.

Today, I wanna know how many of us follow GANDHI in real sense. How many of us are ardent followers of the MAHATMA?

Had GANDHI been alive today, he would have cried witnessing the sight of depravity, apathy, brutality, selfishness, hunger for power ruling this world. We need MAHATMA today. We need his principles, not only on paper but also in practice.

ARE WE READY TO TREAD THE PATH MAHATMA GANDHI SHOWED US? I am certain that if we follow GANDHISM, it will certainly lead us to peace that we very dearly cherish.

Let us wish that the spirit of this icon of nonviolence rests in peace always. It is his martyrdom day today [30 January].. the day a man, NATHURAM GODSE, pumped bullets into the chest of the FATHER of the Nation [INDIA].

Mahatma--a truly great spirit

There is no irrelevance to to Gandhian principles. What is irreveant is only the way of negative thinking. Gandhiji moves millions in the western world today but today he is forgotten slowly among the Indian masses.

Yes I am extremely proud to be a Gandhian. Ihave got phd degree writing Thesis o ''Influence of GANDHI'S IDEAS IN THE MAKING OF THE INDIAN CONSTITUTION''mY BLOG IS- drspthakur.blogspot.com which contains a part of my thesis. I am a staunch follower of Gandhi ji and his practical phIlosophy which he demonstrated to the world getting INDIA FREE THROUGH SATYAGRAHA WITH TOOLS AND MEANS OF TRUTH AND NONVIOLENCE.Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the Nation, had a code of conduct on personal, social,Nationaland International fronts in consonance of ''Karma yoga'' shown in Gita. His words and speeches had poured forth as floods of light smiling on the high and low alike, blessed both, the friends and the foes with the same divine beautitude and gratitude. His each word is an echo,a memory,a melody stirring up strong passion and emotions, which made the then slave people of the then INDIA fearless to resort to Satyagrah following him being united as one and consequently India Marched to freedom and ultimately achieved freedom of INDIA UNDER HIS LEADERSHIP. THIS EVENT IS UNPARALLEL IN THE HISTORY OF THE wORLD.--Dr. Shital Prasad Thakur@GITA PRASAD

THE IDEAS WHICH GANDHI JI LIVED AND DEMONSTRATED TO THE WORLD ARE UNIVERSAL AND SO ARE ALWAYS RELEVANT,AS GITA,BIBLE,AND QORAN ARE ALWAYS RELEVANT.GANDHI JI WAS MAINLY A SAINT WHO HAD TO COME IN POLITICS TO LIBERATE THE NATION FROM SLAVERY.EVEN BUDHA,MAHABIR,ARBINDO,SWAMI VIVEKA NANDA DID NOT TAKE PART IN POLITICS TREATING IT OBSTRUCTION AND HINDERANCE IN THE NWAY TO SPIRITUAL UPLIFT,BUT GANDHI JI JOINED POLITICS,DID SELFLESS WORKS FOR THE WELL-BEING OF INDIA AND PEOPLE,GOT THE NATION FREE,AND BECAME A MAHATMA--KARMAYOGI.HE SAID THAT POLITICS LIKE SERPANTINE HAS ENCIRCLED US WHICH I HAVE TO FIGHT OUT,AND SO HE DID ENTERING INTO POLITICS AND DFATING THE DIRTY POLITICS OF THE BRITISHERS BY TRUTH NON-VIOLANCE AND SATYAGRAH SHOWING THE WORLD THAT TRUTH AND FAIRITY IS THE BEST STRATEGY IN POLITICS EVEN.WE WILL HAVE TO TOE ON THE LINE OF GANDHI AS THERE IS NO ALTERNATIVE.DR.SHITAL PRASAD THAKUR,ADVOCATE,HIGH COURT,PATNA,BIHAR

Influence of Gandhi's Ideas on the evolution of the Fundamental Rights and Directive Principles of State policy in the Indian Constitution---Mahatma Gandhi said in The Round Table CONFERENCE in London''We take responsibility,we ask for responsibility,we demand responsibility, because we have got confidence that we would be able to carry on our affairs in a decent manner, and I feel, certainly in a much better manner than the British administrators have done or could ever do......[because]We know our Country,we know our people, and we should, therefore,be able to run our government cheaply''[India's case,M.K.Gandhip.-157--59]Most of the members of The Constituent Assembly had learnt their political lessons at Gandhi ji's feet.It is,therefore, they have given shape to Gandhi's ideas and ideals in the Indian Constitution to uplift the condition of the Indian masses in the political and socio-economic fields. The president of the Constituent Assemblyand the first president of India Desratna Dr. RAJENDRA pRASAD SAID--''To the extent free India works his[Gandhi's] ideas and attains progressively higher integration, she will succeed in extending the frontiers of Culture and blazing new trial''He further added''many of his ideas, however, has yet to be fully imbibed, while it is agreed that the liberating role of any social order must be judged by the degree of actual freedom it allows to its members[Gandhi's ideas][A collected works of Mahatma Gandhi v.-1 p-7].Pt. Nehru, the most influential member of the C.A. SAID--THIS BELOVED LEADER OF OURS.....ILLUMINED OUR GENERATION WITH HIS LIGHT AND NOT ONLY BROUGHT NATIONAL FREEDOM TO US BUT ALSO GAVE US AN INSIGHT INTO THE DEEPER QUALITIES WHICH HAVE ENNOBLED MAN.IN AGES TO COME ,PEOPLE WILL WONDER THAT SUCH A MAN ONCE TROD ON OUR INDIAN SOIL AND POURED OUT HIS LOVE AND SERVICE TO OUR PEOPLE AND INDUCED HUMANITY....''HE WAS GREAT IN HIS LIFE,AND HE IS GREATER SINCE HE PASSED AWAY....''[IBID-P-1X].TRUELY MAHATMA GANDHI HAS PENETRATED DEEP INTO THE CONSCIOUSNESS OF MEN WHICH THE PEOPLE SUDDENLY REALIZED AFTER HIS DEMISE.TO CONTINUE

Gandhi ji wrote to UNESCO SHORTLY before his death--''The very right to live accrues to us only when we do the duty of citizenship of the world'',suggesting this as the cardinal principle for a world declaration of human rights[profile to Gandhi,ed. Nconsins,p-145].In its declaration of human rights,by the U.N.O.,THE THE SUGGESTIONS OF GANDHI JI TO UNESCO CAME INTO BEING.Clare and Harris Wofford wrote-''Gandhi ji did not live to read THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS ADOPTED BY UNITED NATIONS,BUT EACH ARTICLE[THEREOF] WOULD BE LIKE A ROLL-CALL[OF THE SUGGESTION MADE BY GANDHI JI],WHICH DEMANDED AN ACCOUNTING OF DUTY DONE''[IBID].In the midst of the second world war, when Gandhi ji heard about the proposed four freedoms to be given to the people under THE ATLANTIC CHARTER,GNDHI JI ASKED,''DO THEY INCLUDES THE FREEDOM TO BE FREE''.[B.B.CHARYA,GANDHI,THE WRITER,P-264]Thus we find that the ideals and thoughts of Gandhi ji is Universal for the humanity as a whole. To be continued

You all need to learn about who Gandhi really was in life. He was a two faced man with a political goal for his nation. Read collections of Gandhi's written works - his private journals and you'll understand that Gandhi is not a man to follow and his followers are to be carefully watched. Don't be blind to who he, really, was. He hated blacks. He wrote in his journal, "If we (india) had the atom bomb, we would've used it against the British." He also wrote to Hitler saying that the world had not presented him correctly as he, Gandhi, believed that he was NOT a bad man.

In Indian, in a survey Hitler ranked 3rd most revered political leader! Scary, eh?

@afreedsoul: Please don't write false statements about a man who is revered by many and hated by a few ignorants.Who told you that Gandhi had written this? I have gone through almost every authentic book written on Gandhi. There is nothing as you said. Kindly refrain from making false statements.

Contrary to your argument, Gandhi fought for rights of the Blacks in Africa and found Tolstoy ashram at Natal for Blacks to protest against banning of their entry into Pretoria. He lived there in solidarity with Indians and Africans for a long time. Second, Gandhi never made a statement of hate words against the British; rather, his satyagraha is against the wrong doings of the British, not against the British nation.

I hope you know that when Gandhi visited Britain during the 2nd roundtable, he was warmly welcomed in Lancashire despite the fact that the Swadeshi movement he led caused closure of many textile mills in Lancashire. When atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Gandhi was the first to write to the U.S. president against using atomb bomb on people. He never espoused a cause of violence, let alone the atom bomb.He is probably the only man in the world whose life is like an open book. I wonder what made you call him double-faced man.Gandhi and his Congress followers accepted Cabinet Mission Plan only because they did not want to create more trouble for the allied powers fighting against Hitler.

About India, which survey are you talking about?

Kindly refrain from making such false allegations to disturb the sagacity of healthy social forums, like blogs. If you have any proof to substantiate your claim, kindly produce that. Just throwing mud on someone as revered as Gandhi will not do you any good. Finally, I want to say that if we are enjoying freedom, peace, and relief from racial bias, Gandhi has contributed to a;l this.

Hi Pratiksha,

I am unable to believe that being an Indian, you entertain such thoughts about Gandhiji. WHO TOLD U THIS INCORRECT FACT? Bhagat Singh was hung because of Gandhiji??????? Unbelievable....... Gandhiji had two options: to save lives of millions on one hand and to save lives of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev..he did request the Britishers to leave the trio, but his plea was not accepted...So please forget it that Bhagat Singh was martyred because of Gandhiji!

MK Gandhi, I write this with deep reverance and respect. His thought process and deliveries were the splendid blends theory and practicality for social equality and change, economic freedom, peace and harmony, equality and emancipation of mankind from subjugation of all sorts. I do not find any reason for anyone to criticise him. He was original, straight and true. The modern day thieves in the official power corridors, psuedo spiritual masters, corrupt social workers should feel ashamed. Study him and imbibe what he preached and practised. He did not teach Gandhism. But reflected and excellent life for us to emulate.

Hi Bhalla,

The false comments of "afreedsoul" seem to be coming from the following petition, which surely is a mis-interpretation of the great person's sayings.

http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/stop-honoring-...

As in the following url, Gandhiji could have said that but only for "affirmation of the strength of non-violence".

Sure, Gandhi was a Great Man. His contribution to India's freedom struggle is priceless. But no one is perfect. Gandhi in his lifetimes made some bad decisions and it is not good to make him out to be a saint that he wasn't. making bad decisions isn't a horrible crime, it is important to make mistakes in order to learn from them. And if Gandhi learnt from his mistakes then he was AWESOME. If he didn't he was only human.

I see myself as a person who sees both sides of a coin. No one is all good or all bad. Gandhi has many haters just as he has many lovers. It is wrong for the lovers to discredit everything that the haters say just as it is wrong for the haters to turn down all of the lovers' arguments. But please see that none of you are right.

We all the know all the good stuff that Gandhi did. But what about the totally freaky things?

A core Gandhian value that came in for much bantering and ribald criticism in the west was his celebacy and his experiments in "brahmacharya" or the elimination of all desire. In 1906 Gandhi, although married and a father, vowed to abstain from sexual relations. In the 1940s, in his mid-seventies, he brought his grandniece Manubehn to sleep naked in his bed as part of a spiritual experiment in which Gandhi could test himself as a "brahmachari." Two other women also sometimes shared his bed.

Who does an experiment like that^

I am sure the grandniece had no problems since most ppl practically worshiped Gandhi but still it IS disgusting. she was his FREAKING NIECE.

Also Gandhi was an idealist with a totally utopian vision. the bitter truth is that society can never be the perfect world he imagined. Him failing to be realistic was his biggest weakness and that is what made him make the stupid decisions that he did.

SOCIETY IS NOT PERFECT AND IT CAN NEVER BE SO. To expect anything else is to live a fallacy

NeelamadhabMishra 4 years ago

India had been divided in to small princely states before the British Rule.India was reunited before the Indian Freedom Movement, and the credit goes to [1] Swami Vivekananda, and[2]Mahatma Gandhi, and of course the mis-governance of the British Raj.However, Swamiji and the Mahatma are icons of modern national integration.

A democratic set up is run by voters. So, the kind of democracy we get depends upon the mental make up of the voters. The method of non-violence targets, educates and uplifts the voter to a higher level by compelling him or her to partcipate enmass and in a peaceful manner. So, non-violence is most fit to a democracy. It raises and perfects the democracy itself.
