Do you know your Spiritual Identity?
What is in a name?
Do you know your spiritual identity? What is in a name and why do we need to establish our identity?
Practically we need our identification cards in every legal transactions that we entered into which give us the benefits and privileges of establishing our identity. This is how the trend in the world works. How about our identity as Christians? What is our identification?
What is really an identity?
The dictionary defines it as "the state or fact of remaining the same one or ones, as under varying aspects or conditions."
The Wikipedia defines identity is an umbrella term used throughout the social sciences to describe a person's conception and expression of their individuality or group affiliations (such as national identity and cultural identity).
Legal citizens of a country are always required to have identification. You cannot enter into any legal and binding transactions without proper identification that signifies identity.
If the real world has a need for a person's identification as proof of identity, it is the same thing with being a Christian. As followers of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, there is more to being just a believer. Of course, we know for a fact that we are God’s children or God’s people. There is a big difference though between God’s children and God’s people. We can only be a child of God if we are saved, really know the Lord God and have received Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. In that way we become a child of the Most High God. But if we do not know the Lord Jesus… we just belong to his people.
Father God has established His ownership over us as said in 2 Corinthians Chapter 1 verse 22. "Set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come."
We have all the advantage of being a child of the Most Almighty God who has sealed us and has given us the Spirit of adoption as sons and daughters through Jesus Christ, His only begotten son. Romans 8:23 (New International Version, copyright 2010) “Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. “
I could not think of a more amazing and wonderful thought than having a deeper relationship with the Lord God in Christ Jesus. In John 15:14-16 Jesus said that we are His friends.
“You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit---fruit that will last---and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.”
We are in covenant with God as His children and called by His name. The Holy Bible revealed the secret power of being God’s child that if we only use in the rightful way and live with it according to the principles and the manner God wanted us to do, said power shall manifests God’s presence and sovereignty. Through Jesus Christ and through Him alone can they become children of God in fact and in experience (John 1:12; John 14:6; Matthew 11:27). It is therefore a distinctively Christian experience and always involves a relation of faith in Christ and moral harmony with Him. (International Standard Bible Encyclopedia)
John 1:12-13 (KJV) ”But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”
We will have boldness and access to God (Ephesians 2:18; Ephesians 3:12). With this free union of love with God there comes a sense of power, of independence of circumstances, of mastery over the world, and of the possession of all things necessary which become the heirs of God. (International Standard Bible Encyclopedia)
Romans 8:14-17 (KJV)”For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.”
Galatians 4:5-6 (New International Version) “to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba,Father.” (Please see footnote)
There are still many, many things that point out our full rights as children of God that established our spiritual identity in the Kingdom of God.
We are called to reveal His glory, His love, His righteousness, and His Kingdom authority on earth, and to fulfill his purposes for us and among men.
It is our right and privilege to know where we are now in our walk… do you intend to be a citizen of this world and not aim on our real citizenship as children of God?
It is your choice… discover your identity in the Lord. Judge yourself. In other words… examine yourself.
1 Corinthians 11:31 (KJV)"For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.
1 Corinthians 11:31 (NIV) But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment.
1 Corinthians 11:31(NIV) But if we would examine ourselves, we would not be judged by God in this way.
If we are really children of God… we do not belong to this world. Our citizenship is in heaven, not of this world.
If we managed our identity in this world, we should manage also our identity in the Lord. We know for a fact that frauds are not accepted in heaven. Let us secure our own identity that will really prove our credentials as Christians being the children of the Most High God. It is very important as it tells who we are and how our values and beliefs affect our relationship with God and other people.
What is in a name? For me… my name is not just an accident choice of my parents… it is my identity in the Kingdom of God. As Jesus said… “...rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:20)
We need to establish our ID (identification) as Children of God as Apostle Paul says in Philippians 3:14(KJV)"I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus."
1 John 3:1 "How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called the children of God. And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him."
We should protect and secure our identification as Christians as we are "children of God." There will be no counterfeit, no fake believers. No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God (1 John 3:9). This is our true identity in the Lord. This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother. (1 John 3:10)
Whose child are you then? It is up to you to pick your choice. God has already laid the foundation. He gives us free will. Whatever we choose, He will honor it and we will have to suffer the consequences of that choice.
