Enjoying God

What do you see in your future?

God's Goal

Have you ever considered that God wants you to enjoy Him? While religions teach us about serving God, obeying God, knowing God, and worshipping God, the Bible reveals that what is on God’s heart is ultimately that man would enjoy Him as a Person. This is the key and the power to everything  in the human life. The Bible reveals  a divine romance. In this romance, God is the husband, and humanity is the bride (Isa. 62.5; Hosea  2.19; Matt. 9.15; John 3.29; 2 Cor. 11.2;  Rev. 19.7; 21.9). God loves us! Perhaps you don’t think about God. Maybe you don’t believe in God. Nevertheless, He has been searching for you your entire life. He is here on earth seeking you! And the reason you are here is to find God.

Man's Purpose

No other creature on earth is like us. I am a biologist and have considered these things for some time. Every creature, plant, animal, or microbe, is genetically “programmed” for two things: to survive and to reproduce. If a lion has food, and it is not the breeding season, it will be content to lie on a  warm rock all day. That’s it. Nothing else will it seek. All animals are this way. Only people have an inward longing for something bigger and more profound than the mere survival needs. That is why you pursued a degree in college. That is why you seek entertainment. That is why you like sports and achievements. That is why you are striving to get the most enjoyment out of life and to become the best person that you can be. You are not an animal. You are the center of God’s creation, and designed, programmed, and hard-wired to seek God.

God's Creation

Whether you believe God created us instantly, or slowly evolved us over billions of years, the result is still the same. We have been fashioned by God to be like Him: “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness’” (Gen. 1.26).  As a glove is designed to be in the image of a hand, so we are according to God’s image. This means that our inward being corresponds to God. As Solomon wrote, “He has also set eternity in their heart.” (Ecc. 3.11). Inside of us is an insatiable longing for something of great beauty, wonder, enchantment and eternal value. Only God Himself, revealed to and imparted into our being, can satisfy this eternal longing. We were created with an innate sense of purpose, and only the eternal purpose of God will make us happy. Religion will not do it. Nor will human endeavors or relationships. Only God Himself can satisfy us.

The Bible speaks often of “sin” as the key factor interfering with mankind finding and enjoying God. What is sin? A superficial look at this leads us to consider all the “bad” things we have done. We lie, cheat, and steal. We are apathetic toward the needs of others. Yes, these are sins. But the deepest meaning of sin is “miss aiming” from God Himself. Even if you are a “good” person, if you miss the relationship with the living God, your life is summed up in one word—sin. A religious life is sin. A humanitarian life is sin. Only a life of God Himself hits the mark of God’s eternal plan.

Jesus Christ

Who is Jesus? Jesus was God Himself becoming a man. God in His divine romance chose to leave His eternal heavenly realm to enter our dirty world of time and place. He partook of our nature so that we might partake of His divine nature. His life was sinless, for He completely lived a life in God, with God, and for God. His life was divine perfection. He did not start a world religion. He did not institute a new philosophy of life. Rather, He lived God Himself, and manifested His eternal plan.

His death abolished the wall between God and man. “He who knew no sin became sin on our behalf” (2 Cor 5.21).  Sinful flesh had prevented a relationship between God and man. His death tore the wall apart. “For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life” (Rom 5.10).

Then His resurrection brought the element of God right to your very door—the door of your heart. In resurrection, Christ is now the Spirit, the breathable essence of God, ready and willing to indwell you and reveal the joy and purpose of a living and loving organic union with the God of the universe.  Will you receive this life?  By enjoying God Himself in Christ, we are motivated and empowered to serve and obey Him. To know Christ is to enjoy the most wonderful Person in the universe.  Enjoying God is what true worship is all about.

“The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart (that is, the word of faith which we announce):  that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

(Rom 10.8-9)
