Growing In The Spirit- A Look At Complacency.

Hot Or Cold? Pick one!

Revelations 3: 15-16 15 “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.
Revelations 3: 15-16 15 “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.

Spirituel Growth

Spiritual Growth

Revelations 3: 15-16

15 “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.

When God decides to spew a church out of his mouth because of its complacency and lack of spiritual growth. No amount of money, marketing, or group hugs are going to save it. The only hope this church has is repentance.

Although Revelations 3:15-16 is speaking to a specific Church. It gives us an understanding into God's thoughts on spiritual stagnation. It is a warning not only to the Corporate Body but to us on a personal level as well. It causes us to take a moment to consider our personal walk with God. Am I growing spiritually?

I believe that positive life changes that are inspired by sound doctrine, empowered by the Spirit of God, and evidenced by repentance, is spiritual growth. I see the Christian life as a Journey. Jesus called it a road that leads to life. With this in mind, I often refer to spiritual growth as "Forward Motion".

God calls every Christian, every follower of Christ to stop and take a look at his or her spiritual growth. Am I personally overcoming sin in my life? Can I sense a forward motion in my Christian walk? Or do I seem to be stuck in a rut, stagnate, going nowhere.

Matthew 7:3

And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?

Those who are stagnate often refuse to take responsibility for their lukewarm state. They look around and blame their lack of growth on others. Often they blame the Church as a whole.

When a person comes in contact with the truth of the Word of God, (Sound Doctrine) that person has a choice to make. To accept the truth or reject the truth. It is that simple. Those who reject it walk away accusing and pointing fingers. In their pride, they accuse those who spoke the truth. Again, it is the Church they accuse.

Then there are those lukewarm individuals who say "I was an innocent lamb" when I went to that Church. They hurt me when they did thus and such. Through self-pity, they accuse the bride of Christ for her lack of gentleness and understanding. Because they refuse to examine their own actions or role in the conflict. It is they that lack grace. Eventually, they leave angry, not willing to work out their differences. Bitterness results when they refuse to offer forgiveness and mercy to those who offended them. Failing to realize that God is the one who placed these people in their lives. As Iron sharpens Iron, His purpose is to conform all of us into the likeness of Christ.

Proverbs 3:5

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding

When a person turns to his own understandings and looks to determine truth based on the lens of experience. He becomes wise in his own eyes. When confronted with the truth of God's Word that contradicts his own reasoning, he rejects it and tries to pursued others of his wisdom. If those he is speaking to are not rooted in sound doctrine, they may possibly join him in his humanistic chorus. This is what Ephesians 4 calls being tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting. Those who stand against their false teachings will be given a demeaning label. Old fashion, irrelevant, out of touch, legalistic and so on.... When push comes to shove and their faith is tested with fire. The worthlessness of their doctrines and their lack of discipline will be seen. In the end, it will be around their feet as ashes, smoldering leaving them naked and vulnerable to every wind of doctrine that the storms of life may bring.

Change inspired by sound doctrine, empowered by the spirit of God, and evidenced by repentance, results in spiritual growth/ forward motion.

It is the the Spirit of God who draws, converts and directs us while we are on our Journey. Faith starts with the Spirit and will end in the Spirit, Let us go and walk in the spirit. After all, walking in the Spirit is Forward Motion.

Gal 5: 16

I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

This is such a true statement and a lot of believers lose their blessings because they refuse to repent and acknowlege their contributions to the stagnation of their own personal growth. They end up church hopping and taking the same conscientousness that caused the problem to the new location. Church is a place for healing and everyone who attends has an illness requiring the fellowship of others towards a solution. However, when they're faced with a challenging opportunity for self examination they become offended and run - never reaching that utopia of internal peace which often require a painful, uncomfortable, self examination. I've worked on new church plant committees for the past 12 years and lukewarmness among old and new members has been the biggest challenge to success.

I can see where all are coming from, though the simple question we need to ask ourselves is,"Why do I go to church?" Is it for the people, ourselves or God? Maybe a bit of all three. We get in trouble when we go looking for God and leave with someone else's attitude. Second, if your Saturday night don't match up to your Sunday morning, it's time for a "one on one" with God.

I like what you say here. Those who commented before me have clearly seen it as well. Your foundation scriptures for this Hub were well chosen and well placed. Very nice!!

Thank you for those words of life! Love the way you write, you have a depth in the things of God and have spiritual insight.

Great insight into Matt7:3, when the fire goes out we tend to blame it on externals instead of dealing with the hard questions we need to. I've seen this a lot, I've done it myself and had to humble myself and repent.

The powerful English healing evangelist Smith Wiggleworth, said that each day must be a day of advancement, if its not consider yourself backslidden. There is no resting on our laurels, there is always more in God!

Good point that its common for people to bring the standard of the Scriptures down to their level of experience. Its tempting to change our doctrine to align with our experience especially if we meet with discouragement. For instance if we pray for healing and the person doesn't get healed we may conclude that God doesn't heal today, or that God only uses certain people in the supernatural gifts. It's easier to do this, then to look at ourselves and make the necessary adjustments that need to be made in our lives.

Walking in the Spirit is forward motion-- Yes God is a God of activity not stagnation and boredom Amen!

wba108 Thanks again for stopping by and commenting. You have added excellent insight my friend.

I like what Paul said in Philippians 3:7-11

But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. 8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; 10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, 11 if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.

He kinda sounds like he on the move doesn't he. I love this "if by any means" He is actively seeking! The grass is not growing under his feet.

This verse gives us a glimpse into Paul's heart toward Christ. May we all find the same determination and zeal.

Thanks for adding your thought to mine and for your kind words of encouragement.
