Examining other belief systems.

A look into Astrology in history

I personally believe that the keys, as I have stated before, to peace are understanding and learning that you don't have to believe the same things just accept that everyone has different beliefs. I have decided to examine the other belief systems of the world, in hopes that it might open minds of others. And if you feel the same way about acceptance and cultures please feel free to share your opinions as I would love to meet another person with similar opinions.

What is astrology? How does it differ from Astronomy?

Definition of ASTROLOGY

1archaic : astronomy2: the divination of the supposed influences of the stars and planets on human affairs and terrestrial events by their positions and aspects— as·tro·log·i·caladjectiveas·tro·log·i·cal·lyadverbDefinition from the Merriam Websters dictionary

Definition of ASTRONOMY

: the study of objects and matter outside the earth's atmosphere and of their physical and chemical properties See astronomy defined for English-language learners »See astronomy defined for kids »

Origin of ASTRONOMY

Middle English astronomie, from Anglo-French, from Latinastronomia, from Greek, from astr- + -nomia -nomyFirst Known Use: 13th century

So what are the origins of Astrology?

Well there are some current studies that might be able to date astrology back almost 20,000 years, however at the moment we know that it has been around officially for 4,000 years. yes that is longer than Christianity, you should keep in your mind that Christianity is among the youngest religions in the world which is based off an older religion known a Judaism, transformed younger sect came after the coming of the Lord a little over 2,000 years ago.

Where did it originate from? Now that would be hard to pin point. It would be hard to trace but the current form of Astrology that we use which is a blend of Greek and Babylonian astrology can be trace to ancient Mesopotamia (now Iraq). At the same time another version of Astrology was being used in China. In Central American (Mexico) the Mayans were studying their form of Astrology which they used to predict the end of the Earth around the summer solstice of 2012.

How does Christianity feel about it?

Well there were phrases that support it and condemn it in the Bible, depending on how you interpret it's words. The best part of the Bible is that we are supposed to interpret it in our own way. I feel that it neither condones or condemns astrology but that it just acknowledges that it is there, leaving the reader to chose for themselves the way to feel.

Can astrology be proven? Well that all depends on you who ask. Scientist (Astronomers) have been trying to prove it a foolish past time since the about the 1300th century. While many believers can quote predictions from the past that have come true in previous years. And a lot people say that their Astrological profiles describe them 100%.

Perhaps it is just one of the mysteries that will never be explained.

I'm pretty sure the bible is pro astrology and astronomy. Due to the fact it accounts that God made the entire universe and all that's in it. Genesis 1:14.Then God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years;. To this day at the Vatican in Rome there a teams of researchers and scientists of differing types. They have there a wonderful observatory. Contrary to belief Christian are very pro science. In fact they depend upon it. Only one book in history has been used by archeologist and historians alike to find with great accuracy places and things that no other can do. That book is the Holy Bible. With centuries of scoffers and ney sayers noone can disprove it. In fact the more they try the more it has proven to be found accurate. Even the self professed "athiest" founder of satanism Anton levay came to Christ and admitted he was wrong.

Thank you Catspirit and Lailak. Larry71 I happen to agree with you. My favorite scientist and a person that I deeply admire believe that science was not trying to prove that isn't a good but that it was the way that man tried to prove there is a God. I believe in God whole heartily and also believe that God comes to people in a form that they will accept him, all religions around the world, even before there was global communication, have the same seven pillars of Faith, that is when you take away all of the other trivial details...Is there a reason that this is Globally? Could it be that we all have the same God and we call him by a different name?

My recent decision to investigate all the different Religions is merely to educate and help to extend understanding so that we may begin to end periods of harsh judgment that we allow to separate us all.

I love your opinion and I think you so much for sharing. I am always happy to hear different perspectives.

To a believer in Astrology no proof is needed, and for those that don't no amount of proof will suffice.

Far better that we simply all do as you indicate - believe as we wish and let others do the same.

Hi Erin - I like the theme of this hub. I also have spent a lot of my life looking for the "truth" and in doing so have looked at a lot of different philosophies. In doing so you may find a lot of similarities. I'll be watching this hub - thanks.

I have to agree with you, there are lots of similarities in all belief systems. lol I use the term "enlightenment" not so much truth as a truth is anything agreed to be fact by a certain amount of people. :)
