Online Bible Verses - Galatians 5:22-23 Fruit of the Spirit

Updated on May 10, 2012

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23

“Against such things there is no law.” – And why would there be? No need to restrict behavior which can only be for the better. Seems we could never have too much love. Can’t recall ever thinking someone was too kind, too faithful or exhibited too much self-control.

If indeed this were the way people conducted themselves across the board and 100% of the time, there would be no need for earthly institution of law. That, however, is a pipe dream given man’s innate nature. Could we, however, place all the good people on one side, bad people on the other, and claim all would be OK if only everyone could conduct themselves as per those on the “good” side?

Backtracking for a second, I’m wondering what level of or absence of good would be used as the line of demarcation for who goes on which side. Which side would I be on? Surely the good side. Then again, if I were on the good side, there would be lots of daddy’s having temper tantrums and stuff. Some self-control fallout. When the rest of the good people’s faults began to manifest, I guess the good side could get pretty sparse in a hurry. This is becoming problematic for me. Perhaps I should stop reading this Bible, which seems to describe me a lot of the time and not in a positive light. And when it is not pointing out my faults, a standard is being set which I cannot attain nor aspire to. In short, I fall way short.

Well if that were all it talked about, I would be doomed; as I thought I once was. Hopelessly broken and doomed. A bad boy who cannot be good no matter how hard he tries. That’s me. I will often choose to go my own way and just be standalone me.

Grace abounds however, and God will take me as is. That including all defects, which he will address as per His plan and timing. In the meantime, he gives shows me the way to be, through His word as in the above and also via the model His Son has shown me. We see “fruit of the Spirit” called out. Indwelt with His Spirit, I am enabled to be what I would otherwise not be at times. I have my good moments too.
