Haunted Buckinghamshire - The Canadian Red Cross Hospital Ghosts

Cliveden Estate home of the Astors from 1893-1968
Cliveden Estate home of the Astors from 1893-1968

Ghostly goings on in Buckinghamshire......

Like all small towns and villages in England, Buckinghamshire has its fair share of ghosts and ghouls. In Marlow we have the famous Grey Lady, also known as Dame Elizabeth Hoby. I say Marlow, but actually its just over the bridge at Bisham which skips to the next county, Berkshire.

You can read about her ghostly goings one HERE

But one of the spookiest places has to be creepy old Taplow Hospital or should I say The Canadian Red Cross Hospital at Cliveden Buckinghamshire.

It was creepy when I had my son there 35 years ago, and when it became derelict it was said to be haunted by many ghosts.

The Canadian Red Cross Hospital was closed in 1985, and was derelict for over 20 years. In 1914 the Astor family built it for injured military personnel and at that time it was called the Duchess of Connaught Hospital.

By the second world war the name was changed to Canadian Red Cross Memorial. After the war it became part of the NHS and opened it doors to the general public.

'Like the Mary Celeste'

When the hospital closed, the ghost hunters came. The strange thing about the hospital is that it wasn't cleared out, it was just abandoned. Leaving behind spare parts, medical equipment and personal medical records.

From 1984 to 88 the hospital was guarded to stop curious eyes and keep treasure seekers out, but after 1988 it was left completely.

For the first explorers of this derelict hospital the sights must have been pretty spooky to say the least. The wards, kitchen and the famous Black Laboratories where animal experiments took place, alongside the morgue must have been chilling to see.

Some people whispered that it was like the Mary Celeste. A lot of the ghost hunters would stay there, as the nurses accommodation was still habitable.

And so the ghostly sightings began to creep out into the public's ears, and stories started to be told of a strange misty type of atmosphere that seemed to swirl and move along the main hospital corridor.

Owen Pellow

The first explorers get more than they bargained for....!

Eyewitness accounts by musician Damon Torsten and his friend Owen Pellow stated that 'There's is a haze that seems to exude an aura as you walk through the corridor. its as though something or someone was telling you to get out'.

They go on to say that they saw a lamp post swaying and creaking even though there was no draught in the room and there were other noises they could hear too.The uneasiness was the worse, they said.

Obviously psychology pops its head up here. We would all feel uneasy in this setting, but some of the sightings and feelings were more difficult to explain.

The two men decided to go back to investigate and found documents concerning details of patients who had died at the hospital. Their batteries began to fail and they decided to leave, but as they walked down a strange side corridor they were suddenly frightened out of their wits!

A loud noise suddenly broke the silence and the bang became a really loud moan. The groaning became louder and got higher and higher until it became an insane screech!

Then they saw something come rushing towards them! The guys just stood there totally frozen, and both said afterwards that they could feel complete evil coming towards them. Like millions of bat wings flapping. Suddenly they started running and got out of there as quickly as they could.

Later the entity would start to be called the Flincher.

Séance in the Chapel..

Other ghosts are said to be seen walking, or in the case of the one legged soldier stomping around the hospital, such as Sandra who lived near the hospital.

She claims that one night her family were just looking around the ruins and ended up in the Chapel of the hospital. Thinking that it would be safe there, lets face it, no ghost is going to mess with Jesus, they went in for a séance just for fun! Not the best idea.....!

She goes on to say that it was the most frightening night of her life. There were five people in the room, and one who decided to take photos.

After leaving the room, Sandra heard her mother say, 'Quick, take a photo'! At that point the corridor outside went icy cold, the batteries in the camera died and her mother couldn't move! She said something was stopping her!

All of a sudden they all found they couldn't move, and started to choke. It took approx five minutes to move them and the mother out of the way. One of the men had been trying to move her, but it was as though she had turned to stone. She began to be sick and screamed Something was trying to choke me'!

By this time the camera had started working again, and when the photo was checked there, on the screen was a big ball of light wrapped around her lower legs.

The séance hadn't been 'closed' so they quickly said their words, and as they spoke the air went cold again and Sandra doubled over in pain.

Later, checking the photos they noticed small balls of light, or orbs, surrounding them.

Feeling the touch of death on the neck can give one quite a start!

Ghostly and at peace, the remains of hospital life.

“Ghosts are just our minds telling us that subconsciously we feel guilty about something we should have done, would have done, but never took the time!”

— Nell Rose

Would you buy a home.....?

There are many more tales of ghostly goings on at this creepy old Hospital, luckily its now been pulled down and turned into new homes.

But let me ask you a question,

Would you buy a house on top of the ruins where a haunted Hospital stood?

Er, no!

Have you ever gone Ghost Hunting in a haunted house or Hospital?

  • No way! You couldn't drag me there!
  • Yes! and I saw a ghost!
  • Yes, but I never saw anything.
  • Its all a load of psychological rubbish!
  • No, but I would love to have a go!

Notes:

*Just a small note on counties. Some people believe Cliveden Taplow is in Berkshire, others have placed it in Buckinghamshire. The truth is that it sits on the east bank of the river Thames, which is still Bucks, opposite Maidenhead which is in Berkshire. According to Wikipedia.

Wow, Nell. You had your son there? Did you have weird feelings? I know the hospital was still standing and operable at the time, but so many people died there. There had to have been spirits left behind.

This fascinates me but you couldn't pay me to visit the ruins. I'd freeze, just that that one woman did!

Wow Nell, I don't think I would go within 50 miles of that hospital. The video was creepy too. I always love your scary stories. Keep ' em coming...

This Hub made me have goose bumps, Nell. I looked at the video, and saw an old newspaper (I think) with a headline "Breastfeeding without fear". I enjoyed reading this, but I'm not convinced there are really ghosts.....

Hi bravewarrior, it was pretty spooky even back then! I remember going into labour and being in this old room with the windows open so people walking past could see in! not nice! it had an aura about it even then, just old, and feeling that not nice things had happened there, can't really explain it, thanks as always, nell

Hi Nell,

Well done, as always! I like the way you balance the available facts with a healthy dollop of skepticism.

Some day, I may explore additional haunted places (in addition tot the haunted basement I mentioned a couple of years ago). When the spirit moves me. :)

Sorry for being out of touch for so long. Health issues and a pesky computer problem.

You will never find me there i said NEVER . I am not that curious i won't even look at that place if passing near by. Obviously that place must be haunted with so many people dying there, soldiers Who murdered people etc. The video was spooky, my granny said why are you watching that then tonight you'd be frighten. She has a point.

I don't want an apartment there even if its carved out of gold? Will you visit there now nell? I mean tour inside.

Nell, your articles are so much fun to read, but only in the daylight hours. :)

Fascinating place. A few years ago, one of my colleagues went for a nap in an office in the critical care unit where I work. She was awoken to find a figure looking down at her but disappeared when she began to scream. On hearing the commotion, some of the nurses on duty entered the room and found her so frightened and incoherent, it was obvious that something pretty scary had occurred. She's still working on the unit but gives that office a wide berth. Most hospitals have a ghost story, but I'll keep my distance from the Canadian Red Cross Hospital, even in the day time. Brilliant read.

I love ghost stories and yours are just the best, Nell, because they come from personal experience. I would never buy a house built on the site of an abandoned hospital, or an old graveyard or anything like that..... but then I am someone who is totally given to the power of intuition and open minded when it comes to all sorts of alternative reality. I think if I could find an ancient hag who told the future by examining chicken entrails I would go see her.... meanwhile I'll just settle for tea leaves...... amazing how accurate they can be :-) Great hub

Nell, you always find the most interesting stories to share. That is so strange that all that was left behind, especially medical files! I would not go near that place. When one opens the door, such as in a séance, one is certainly inviting evil to come in, and it will!

The videos are eerie. My heart goes out to all those who suffered and died there long ago.

I love your hubs on ghosts and goblins, Nell. This hospital sure would be creepy to see after closure . I love the histories behind these and the ghosts that haunt them. You won't catch me on a ghost hunt here, but I would love to hear your ghost hunt experiences. How ironic that you gave birth in this hospital when it was open. You should know the ghosts, Nell. LOL! Another great write.

What an interesting perspective: "Ghosts are just our minds telling us that subconsciously we feel guilty about something we should have done, would have done, but never took the time!”

I will most certainly not live where ghosts dwell. Yet, it is sad when a building - a structure providing shelter and in the case of a hospital even more - gets abandoned.

Voted up, very interesting and packed with c-r-e-e-p-y facts :)

Thank you, Nell!

I sorry for whoever going there to live, that spot will still be haunted & can't even think of getting a priest to pray because they are more possessed than that building. Faking and making a mockery of God.....deceiving many!

U know lastnight when i had to get up to pass water you had me feeling spooky i was thinking of the one legged soldier. "Sad sad face" Gross and creepy ,lol

Hi Nell, I really loved your hub, videos and all. That's something, to be able to say you gave birth in a haunted hospital! It sounds like a very creepy spot although its beginnings were rooted in very well intentioned actions. Strange how the atmosphere of a place can turn bad. Anyone who visits there should read my hub about surviving a haunted house before they go, especially the part about not going in the first place :-).

Take care.

Spooky! I wouldn't even consider such things as seances; I think it's dangerous to meddle in them. I've had some supernatural experiences and why shouldn't ghosts exist? Stories like these are fascinating and give some credence to some sort of supernatural.

Sorry about the misinformation on Kate; seems I believed a tale and they are not letting out the sex of the baby. Oh well I was happy for awhile. Okay, Ladies, call me snoopy - but, I had to come see what you were talking about with William and Kate. I absolutely love seeing them or reading about them. Nell and Jackie, I hope the baby is a girl. How lovely she will be. Mary Margaret is a lovely name. Mary Margaret Dianna, maybe?

I also came back, Nell, to tell you I love researching old abandoned hospitals, especially the ones for the mentally ill. I have done a lot of research on such places. Recently I came across Cane Hill Hospital (Asylum) in the UK. It was built in the late 1800s and closed its doors in 1991, I believe. I hope you check that out, Nell, and write another thrilling story for us. I have a few others here in the states to check into (well ... not as a patient, just an observer ... LOL).

Cheers!
