Ghosts in my Bed - A True Story
The Niles Hotel
A True Story
It was late evening, I had been driving all day to get to Alturas, Ca. for the annual Hot Air Balloon fest. Being one of the pilots that attended this event, I had driven from the Bay Area to Alturas several times before, and this was no different.
The trip is actually a lovely drive up Interstate 5 to Redding where you turn east on State Highway 299. As you head east, you begin climbing into the mountains passing through small valleys, quaint old west towns and forests that can only be described as awesome!
You will pass through towns like; Round Mountain, Montgomery Creek, Burney, Fall River Mills, MacArthur and many More. You will pass through Shasta County, Lassen County and into Modoc County as you near your destination.
Alturas is located right on the Pitt River, Southeast of Klamath Falls, Or. and not far west of the Nevada State Line. Alturas (Then called Dorris Bridge) was made the county seat in May of 1874.
The Ghostly Event
I don't know the exact date, but the Niles Hotel is well over 100 years old and is the place the City houses the pilots each year for the event over the weekend. I checked in this year late in the evening and was told the "normal" rooms were all filled on the second floor. I was given a room on the third floor where the hotel staff live. Most of the other pilots were already checked in and out roaming the town enjoying the evening.
I put my things in the room, and went out on the second floor balcony to play a few songs on my guitar and sing to the town. Eventually I was tired enough to call it a night, and I went in to shower and retire for the night. The restroom is a communal location on the third floor but was empty at this time of night. I could see a few rooms down the hall with light on and wondered what the employees were up to.
As I entered the shower area, I had a very hollow sick feeling in the pit of my stomach, and could feel a very strong presence that was unseen. I showered and such and then went to my room and got in bed. The room was small with an old metal frame bed that was bigger than a twin bed but smaller than a full size. I was laying on my right side still awake but with eyes closed.
Within just a few minutes of getting in bed, I felt a body sit on the opposite side of the bed and lay down pressing against my back as if another person was cuddling me. This of course was quite odd and startled me out of the bed. I yelled "No" and as I turned to look, and the mattress lifted up as the weight of the unseen body stood and was gone. The pillow had the impression of the ghost's head and was warm to the touch.
The Niles Hotel Staff
I threw on my pants and went to the lobby but no one was there. I went to the second floor and found Peggy, one of my balloon pilot friends awake and told her the story. She was amazed and we chatted about this for some time.
The next morning, I found the lady that ran the hotel and told her the story. I thought she would laugh or think I was crazy, but to my amazement she calmly said I had most likely been visited by the "Old Lady" that owned the hotel and had passed away on the third floor many years earlier. Apparently, this old lady was quite the player and enjoyed her men.
I was given a room on the second floor as some people had checked out that morning, and I spent the rest of the weekend there and flew a couple very nice flights in the event.
