Modoc County in Northeastern California.

A True Story

It was late evening, I had been driving all day to get to Alturas, Ca. for the annual Hot Air Balloon fest. Being one of the pilots that attended this event, I had driven from the Bay Area to Alturas several times before, and this was no different.

The trip is actually a lovely drive up Interstate 5 to Redding where you turn east on State Highway 299. As you head east, you begin climbing into the mountains passing through small valleys, quaint old west towns and forests that can only be described as awesome!

You will pass through towns like; Round Mountain, Montgomery Creek, Burney, Fall River Mills, MacArthur and many More. You will pass through Shasta County, Lassen County and into Modoc County as you near your destination.

Alturas is located right on the Pitt River, Southeast of Klamath Falls, Or. and not far west of the Nevada State Line. Alturas (Then called Dorris Bridge) was made the county seat in May of 1874.

The Ghostly Event

I don't know the exact date, but the Niles Hotel is well over 100 years old and is the place the City houses the pilots each year for the event over the weekend. I checked in this year late in the evening and was told the "normal" rooms were all filled on the second floor. I was given a room on the third floor where the hotel staff live. Most of the other pilots were already checked in and out roaming the town enjoying the evening.

I put my things in the room, and went out on the second floor balcony to play a few songs on my guitar and sing to the town. Eventually I was tired enough to call it a night, and I went in to shower and retire for the night. The restroom is a communal location on the third floor but was empty at this time of night. I could see a few rooms down the hall with light on and wondered what the employees were up to.

As I entered the shower area, I had a very hollow sick feeling in the pit of my stomach, and could feel a very strong presence that was unseen. I showered and such and then went to my room and got in bed. The room was small with an old metal frame bed that was bigger than a twin bed but smaller than a full size. I was laying on my right side still awake but with eyes closed.

Within just a few minutes of getting in bed, I felt a body sit on the opposite side of the bed and lay down pressing against my back as if another person was cuddling me. This of course was quite odd and startled me out of the bed. I yelled "No" and as I turned to look, and the mattress lifted up as the weight of the unseen body stood and was gone. The pillow had the impression of the ghost's head and was warm to the touch.

The Niles Hotel Staff

I threw on my pants and went to the lobby but no one was there. I went to the second floor and found Peggy, one of my balloon pilot friends awake and told her the story. She was amazed and we chatted about this for some time.

The next morning, I found the lady that ran the hotel and told her the story. I thought she would laugh or think I was crazy, but to my amazement she calmly said I had most likely been visited by the "Old Lady" that owned the hotel and had passed away on the third floor many years earlier. Apparently, this old lady was quite the player and enjoyed her men.

I was given a room on the second floor as some people had checked out that morning, and I spent the rest of the weekend there and flew a couple very nice flights in the event.

Conclusion

This is an absolutely true story, lived, experienced and remembered by this author.

Well, how could I resist a story with a title like this? And what a wonderful story. I do feel a bit badly for the old lady ghost, though. She wanted you as a bed buddy! lol

I don't blame you, though. I would have been freaked out! I voted this hub, Up and more. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you Made, Thing like do happen all over the world and are far too numerous to discount!

Hi KT, thank you for visiting. I guess the old lady liked my singing?

And maybe what she saw in the shower! ; )

(Don't mind me, I'm just an old flirt!) lol

Hello, don't mind me. I fell like I interrupted something here :-) Anyway, loved that story. I'm not sure I would have been as calm as you were. Good story and I do believe you. It would be great if we had a campfire. That would be a perfect setting for sharing such a spooky happening.

Wow -- Mark. That is really amazing! No doubt your singing and guitar strumming enchanted the old ghostie! er - can a ghost be enchanted or do they rule that domain already? Hm . . . . In any case, she wasn't too subtle about it, was she?

DzyMsLizzy profile image

Awesome! I imagine it must have been unsettling, but as you experienced, certainly not harmful.

We have a mischievous little girl spirit in our house; she doesn't get into bed with us, but she loves to hide things.

Thanks for sharing your story. I'm going to share this hub, and most particularly via a direct link to a friend of mine who is a professional paranormal investigator. She used to live in Northern CA, and may have visited this very location.

I've been in the area--when I was a kid, we used to camp at Mt. Lassen, and I've been to Burney Falls, Susanville, Fall River Mills, etc....

Up, interesting, awesome and shared!

Ha Cyndi, a campfire would be fun :)

Hi Nellieanna, I am not sure if an old ghostie can be enchanted but she was after something?

Seriously, it was very strange.

So cool Curiad. The pillow told a story for sure, yet one tell-tell sign says you were in the presence of good. With your balloon adventures have you been near Calico Ghost town and Mule Canyon. Legend says . . .well those were cub scout days, so no telling. Near Barstow it is. I bet if we pressed Simone she could unearth a few ghost stories of from San Francisco.

One just never knows when a ghost is going to cross their path. I have had two encounters now. This one of yours was a hottie for you. I guess the shower scene of a naked man and then your crooning on the balcony all but turned her on. I think she could have had the decency to bring up a bottle of champagne and two glasses if she was intending to lay beside you and cuddle up:-))) Kidding apart, I truly believe your every word, I use to be an unbeliever until my encounters, now I wait and wonder when my next encounter is going to appear.

The fact that your encounter happened doesn't surprise me as much as the warmth you felt on the pillow. The night my dad passed, he let me know, in no uncertain terms, he was fine. I have concrete facts that support my feelings that he still watches over me. There are many mysteries we don't have answers for, yet it doesn't negate them. Great writing, Mark.

Thank you Amy, It was an odd event and leaves me wondering. I have had so many other "paranormal" events happen, of varied kinds that I actually welcome them and endeavor to decipher the messages.

It seems you are a spiritual person, Mark. The first time someone suggested I might be was in a brief trip to Hawaii, where my sister has lived for most of her adult life. I had my then, 3 year old daughter with me and while on the beach, "the big Kahuna" approached us. He asked to share our blanket, gave me an aloe plant for my sunburn and constructed a beautiful headpiece and necklace for Megan from the flowers on a tree in his yard. When I told my sis, she was indignant that in the 15 years she'd lived there, she'd never met him. My sister's S/O made the statement that "He must have sensed your spiritual nature". That may be why you have experienced so many paranormal events. Count yourself lucky, Mark!

Charles Hilton 4 years ago

You passed-up a chance for free ghost-sex, compliments of the hotel. lol

Your experience reminds me of the time I was awakened by footsteps on the hardwood floor approaching my bed, years ago.

Too scared to open my eyes, I felt the mattress press down directly in front of my stomach as if someone were sitting there. When I could bear it no longer---and not trusting what 'it' might do---I opened my eyes to a dark, empty room, except for me and my girlfriend, who was asleep behind me.

Excellent and scary post.

Voted up!

Wow, a very similar experience Charles. Was this at home, in a hotel or where? Thank you for reading and commenting by the way!

Charles Hilton 4 years ago

It was in her townhouse in an old townhouse/apartment development.

I don't know if it's because the Baltimore metro area has a lot of history, or what, but, I've had paranormal experiences just about everywhere I've lived.

And it was in that particular townhouse that I had several spine-tingling experiences, including an apparition.

Loved your story. I also agree with your interpretation of the universe as alive and affected by our thoughts. We know of more stories of that nature, but not personally. On our honeymoon in Wheeler Oregon, my husband was concerned that it was old and moldy, but when he learned of the stories of similar experiences, he was intrigued. But, too bad, we had so much fun that the spirits left us to our selves. And the Elk in the pasture across the river, and the big mountain to the west, which we watched the night rising up its banks in the evenings. Hard to believe that Highway 101 was totally empty during the evenings that year. Redmadness

I totally believe it, and I'll go you one more. The spirit of my husband is with me all the time. I do not feel the bed dip down, but I feel touches on my hair, and a tingling against my back sometimes which tells me he is near. I have learned to talk telepathically to him. And I hasten to add that I am not afraid. I know he is not here to hurt me.

I lived in California most of my life, and have seen nearly all of it. Unfortunately, Alturas is one of the few places I missed. I would LOVE to visit it, maybe even move there! I know it has lots of hot springs and semi-precious gem stones. A woman who owned a rock shop in Palo Alto told me her father went up there, and returned with a pillowcase full of geodes.

I didn't know they have hot air ballooning there! Do they have a drop zone? How about wing suit flying? Maybe I should make a point of moving there!
